Question:

I have a very elementary question. I am not familiar at all with brakes. I need to replace my surge brake actuator and coupler on my triple axle eagle 1990 ish boat trailer. I am about 9000 pounds fully loaded. My silly question is, how do I know if I have disc or drum brakes?

You can easily see whether you have drum or disc brakes on your triple-axle boat trailer by simply removing one wheel. You will then see either a hub/drum assembly like # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K if you have drum brakes or a hub/rotor assembly and a brake caliper like those in kit # K2HR526D if you have disc brakes.

You'll need to select a replacement actuator of the appropriate type to match the brakes on the trailer. We offer both drum and disc brake actuator couplers. These have different operating pressures, higher pressure for disc brakes (usually 1500 or 1600-psi) and lower pressure for drums.

Then you can use the other filters on the next page to choose the style of coupler, a-frame versus straight channel mount like # T4750820, the type of reverse lockout you prefer (manual or electric or no lockout) as well as the coupler ball size required - most likely 2-5/16-inch. Naturally you want to choose a coupler that has a weight rating that meets or exceeds the trailer's 9K weight.
