If you are looking to match a factory type set-up on your 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, then the round factory plug you are referring to is a 7-way trailer socket. Because you don't have the factory tow package, we need to take a couple steps to get us there.
The first step is to see if the factory wiring for a tow package is present. Look behind the bumper on the passenger side for a connector. If there is a connector, we will just need # 18138. This will allow us to simply connect the factory quick connections for a plug and play option. Check out the installation video I attached to see how this harness installs.
We would then just need a mounting bracket like # PK12711U-26. If there were wires at the rear for quick connection, I would also check under the dash for the brake controller connection wires. The harness will be located underneath the dash and left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. There will be a 6-pin connector that mates with the one on the adapter. The wires may or may not be there, but if they are, then you have a second easy plug and play connection using the wiring harness # 3026-P. This would allow a simple plug into the wiring under the dash and into the back of any Tekonsha brake controller.
If that wiring isn't present, it looks like you have already done some research and have looked at the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # C56181. This will give us the start we need by connecting behind the taillights to factory plugs. We will then run the power supply wire to the battery and that will protect our electrical system from overloading.
If you just want the 4-way functions on a 7-way plug, then we will just need a connector like the Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole Vehicle End Trailer Connector, # 30717. This will not give you the reverse, power, or brake controller function of the 7-way until the wires are connected, but will give you the 4 tail light functions by simply plugging it in and mounting it.
If you are looking to wire the system completely, we will want to use the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat, # ETBC7. This will give you the 7-way connector, the brake controller wire, and all the circuit breakers and connectors needed to completely wire the system. I've included a video of this installation on a Traverse for you and the installation instructions will be included. The Traverse in this video is slightly older than your 2016 model, but the installation will be exactly the same. Installing this kit will give us everything we need except for the electric brake controller itself.
For the brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller which will apply the brakes on the trailer with the same force you apply the brakes on the tow vehicle. This controller has an easy to read LCD display that is very easy to understand. It runs complete diagnostics and makes you aware immediately without deciphering codes. It also has 3 levels of boost that lets you adjust the initial braking power and aggressiveness.
