Question:
We have a Titan 2010 dual axel 12,000lb trailer. The battery shorted out. Does it matter what brand of battery and box we get to replace it? and is the current wiring going to be ok?

When replacing the battery on your trailer, I would recommend using a 12 volt 5 amp hour battery like the Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery, item # HM20008. The brand of battery is not particularly important as long as your system does not have special features like a lid with charge indicators.
Once you have selected a battery you will need to select a battery box to protect the battery from the elements and secure it to the trailer. We have the Replacement Box with Non-LED Lid for Engager Breakaway Kit, item # HM20120, which will work well with the above mentioned battery.
You will need to check your trailer wiring to be sure that none of the wiring was melted or damaged from the short. Normally the trailer and vehicle are protected by fuses, you will also need to check the fuses and replace any blown fuses. If your fuses did their job correctly your wiring should be just fine.
You may want to consider replacing the whole breakaway system on your trailer. The extra cost would be minimal and you would be assured the the breakaway wiring is in good condition. The Engager Trailer BreakAway Kit with Charger and Tester, item # 20099, would be a good choice. This kit includes a charger to maintain the breakaway battery and all of the wiring needed to install it on the trailer. The Tekonsha Push To Test Breakaway Kit with Charger, item # 50-85-313, featured in the linked video, would also be a good choice for your trailer.
