Video Transcript for An In-Depth Look at the Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be checking out the Hopkins replacement battery for trailer breakaway boxes. Trailer maintenance is often one of those things that just gets overlooked, you know, you don't use 'em all the time. In some cases they'll sit outside and the breakaway battery being charged and operating correctly is critical because you're gonna need this in those situations where you we're to come accidentally disconnected, you know, and what would happen is your breakaway switch would get pulled, the battery would send power back to your trailer's brakes, helping the trailer to slow down and kind of get things back under control. So, you know, a lot of times you're never gonna run into that situation, but when you do or if you do, you want everything to function properly. So like I said a lot of times this just kind of just gets overlooked.

But it's a critical part of your trailer's braking system. Our trailer today is a perfect example of that, you know, a guy bought it used sitting around for a while and a lot of the stuff wasn't working. The wiring, the brakes, a lot of components needed fixed and that's what we did. So right now we have the original battery in there and if we test it, our box has a test function here, we get no power at all, nothing lights up. We actually installed a new breakaway switch for him too which is another way to kind of test it.

So if the battery was good, when we pull this it should light up red and it's getting nothing. So we know this battery's dead. A lot of times, you know, you can try to charge 'em but sometimes you're just too far gone and that was a case with this one and that's why we are replacing it. The way you replace these, super easy, you open up your box and we'll just have a couple of wires there, power and ground. That's really all there is to it to get 'em back up and going.

And this is gonna work with a ton of the breakaway boxes out there. They're all pretty generic in terms of size and as long as your battery will fit in the box and it's the proper rating, you'll be in good shape. So this is a 12 volt battery, it's 5 amp hours and that's gonna be what the majority of the batteries are that are out there on trailers. In terms of how big this is gonna be, it's gonna be 3-1/2 inches long, 2-3/4 of an inch wide and 4 inches high. Like I said, you know, almost a perfect matchup with just about all the other batteries out there.

So this is kind of example of the old one compared to the new and these things just pop in and that's really all there is to it. So when you do get it replaced, not a bad idea just to check it and make sure everything is indeed working properly. So if we test it now, we get that green light. Really hard to see on a sunny day, but it is green. Compared to some of the other ones available this one here is a Bright Way Group battery and really not a whole lot to compare to be honest with you. They're same size, same ratings are both a non spillable lead acid type battery. So you know, you really couldn't go wrong with either one of them. Other than that, at the end of the day this will be a great way to kind of get your trailer up and going again without having to get a whole entire new breakaway box. You know, if your existing one is in good shape no reason to replace that whole thing when you can just get a new battery for it. And that'll finish up our look at of the Hopkins replacement battery for a trailer breakaway boxes.

I was delighted with the arrival of the break-away battery. It was exactly as described and was charged and ready for use. My greatest appreciation goes to etrailer for the rapid response and arrival of the battery. I requested standard shipping. etrailer offered, without additional charge, priority shipping getting the battery to me within two days. WOW!!!

by:

I had a difficult time resourcing a 12 V Battery, for my trailers brake-a-way system locally.
I had previosuly ordered from etrailer, and was very pleased with thier service, and care to communicate the leadtime for delivery.
Great customer service!

I needed a new 12 volt battery for my utility trailer break-away brake. I found what appeared to be a direct replacement on etrailer.com based on the good description and high resolution picture on the website. I placed the order and the battery appeared two days later. The battery was exactly what I needed. The quality was good and the size was as advertised. The terminals were the right size and in the right places. Based on service like this, etrailer is the first place I look for my trailer and towing needs.

by:

Seems to be a great battery and fits right in the battery box of my haulmark motorcycle trailer. The hitch and coupler locks are great. They too fit perfectly and so much easier they are keyed the same. Exremely fast shipping and great communication by email from etrailer. I ordered another part from another company two days before ordering the battery from etrailer. It's still not here. I highly recommend etrailer. I will not get any trailer parts or accessories anywhere else from now on.

by:

quick shipping will order again

by:

Perfect match, thank you!

by:

Tara set up the order for me and had it in the mail that afternoon. It arrived a day ahead of time no problems. It was fully charged right out of the box. It fit right into the charging system box just as Tara said it would. The brakes on my Worthing double axel motorcycle trailer engaged and held till l reconnected to runaway cable. I had been trying to locate a TAP replacement battery and was informed by Tara that TAP had been bought out by Hopkins and this was the same battery with their name on it.

No problems with this battery or keeping it charred. If I do not use the trailer for a time I keep an eye on the charge light if it goes from green to yellow I just plug the trailer into my truck connector and let it charge for an hour or when it returns to green it’s good to go!!

by:

etrailer.com Awesome, they got my trailer on the road again, Very Happy with there services & a fast response

by:

Perfect replacement of my original battery. Exact same size as original battery, allowing the battery to fit in the plastic receptacle box that protects the battery and charger and mounts to the trailer.

E-Trailer is GREAT. The products I purchased a year ago continue to work perfectly. I will remain a loyal customer always!

by:

Exact replacement for my trailer breakaway emergency brake. Wanted a battery designed for transportation instead of a cheap UPS battery. eTrailer always has great service and web documentation so you can't go wrong.

by:

Just shows it pays to purchase from the OEM distributor. This batttery was the exact replacement and fit perfectly in the housing. I had looked at some cheaper replacement models, but they were just a bit larger, and would have required modification to fit. Using the proper size required little effort on my part, and the process was completed in less than 5 minutes.

  • Troubleshooting UPG Breakaway Kit To Allow Trailer Transport To Service Center
You can get your trailer to a repair center without a breakaway battery working. You will just need to disconnect the power going to the switch for the pin prior to the pin. This will disengage your breakaway system until you can get it looked at. If there is still power going to your brakes, there is a short somewhere else in your system. Another option is to get the kit and replace it yourself. If you just need a battery, I recommend the Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery # HM20008....

  • Why Does Engager Break-Away System On Horse Trailer Drain Battery On Vehicle and Trailer?
The Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 20099 should not be draining the battery from your vehicle or from the breakaway battery unless the cable is pulled out. What could be happening is the breakaway Battery # HM20008 is unable to hold a charge and when connected to your vehicle it is trying to charge the battery which kills the vehicle battery. But when disconnected since the battery cannot maintain a charge it also dies very quickly. If you still want to use a toggle...

  • Installing a Battery on a Trailer and Wiring it to Run Interior Trailer Lights
I recommend a 12 volt car battery rather than a breakaway battery because you may end up needing the larger battery down the road. What you will do is attach a battery box (see link for options) to the trailer frame. From the trailer side 7-Way connector, there will be a wire attached to the pin in the 11:00 position (if looking at the face of the plug). This is the 12 volt circuit. You can attach that to the positive terminal of the battery. It will maintain the battery but it will not...

  • Replacement Battery For Hopkins Engager Breakaway Kit
Hi Keith; you could replace the battery with the # HM20008 but I would go ahead and replace the entire thing with # 20099. If you replace the whole kit you're getting the battery and a usable battery connection plus you don't have to worry about other parts wearing out (especially since one already did) which would end up costing you more in the long run.

When replacing the battery on your trailer, I would recommend using a 12 volt 5 amp hour battery like the Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery, item # HM20008. The brand of battery is not particularly important as long as your system does not have special features like a lid with charge indicators. Once you have selected a battery you will need to select a battery box to protect the battery from the elements and secure it to the trailer. We have the Replacement Box with Non-LED Lid for...

It is designed for use with the 12 volt 5 amp hour battery traditionally found on single and tandem axle trailers like # HM20008 or # TK2023. • Vent Availability for Running Battery in Enclosed Trailer
There are a lot of people who run batteries on the interiors of their trailers without problems. What you can do is install a battery vent like part # A10-3300 on the trailer and it would be vented. Ideally you would have the battery sealed in a box with only the vent as a way to get to air.

I also recommend hooking your battery up to your trailer's 7-way using the junction box # 38656 which will then maintain the battery on-board while hooked up. • Recommended Battery Size for Breakaway Brake System
The battery you use for a break away system needs to be able to power the trailer brakes on full for 15 minutes. A 12 volt battery rated for 5 amp hours is normally used, unless you have 3 axles each with brakes, then you would benefit more from a 9 amp hour battery. However a battery this large would not charge up through the 12 volt circuit coming through the trailer connector. For such an application high-efficiency LED-type lighting is ideal since these will draw only a small fraction of the power required by standard incandescent bulbs. For example, if your trailer sits for long periods of time (like you mentioned) then it is best to place a charger like part # CTEK56353 if you are sotring it near AC power or the part # PTW2997 if it will be sotred outside to maintain the life of the battery.
