Video Transcript for Hopkins Trailer Breakaway Kit HM20008 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at part number HM20008. This is the Hopkins replacement 12 volt battery for trailer breakaway kits. It's designed to power the trailer brakes in a breakaway situation for a full 15 minutes on a 1 to 2 axle trailer, which will keep the trailer from a run-away situation. The 12 volt battery is rated at 5 amp hours, which is common for breakaway kits. It's going to feature F1 terminals. Now, these are going to measure at 0.187 inches wide, which is also 3/16th of an inch in width. If we tend to look at the overall dimensions of the battery, nice compact size.

Measuring this direction, that's going to give us a measurement of about 3-1/2 inches. If we measure the height, we're looking at 4 inches, and then if we measure the width, that's going to give us a measurement of about 2-3/4 of an inch. That's going to do it for today's review of part number HM20008, this is the Hopkins replacement 12 volt battery for trailer breakaway kits. .

Tara set up the order for me and had it in the mail that afternoon. It arrived a day ahead of time no problems. It was fully charged right out of the box. It fit right into the charging system box just as Tara said it would. The brakes on my Worthing double axel motorcycle trailer engaged and held till l reconnected to runaway cable. I had been trying to locate a TAP replacement battery and was informed by Tara that TAP had been bought out by Hopkins and this was the same battery with their name on it. 776812

Factory replacement exactly what I needed. Play and play, works perfectly. I would have given it 5 stars except it took longer than expected to arrive because it was out of stock. I’ve made multiple purchases from Etrailer and I will order from them again in the future. 638086

So happy to find the exact battery I needed that fit the trailer braking system. I was worried that it would be hard to find the funky size for this older system. Came right away, too. Thank you. 441753

  • Vent Availability for Running Battery in Enclosed Trailer
There are a lot of people who run batteries on the interiors of their trailers without problems. What you can do is install a battery vent like part # A10-3300 on the trailer and it would be vented. Ideally you would have the battery sealed in a box with only the vent as a way to get to air.

  • What Powers the Interior Light of a Horse Trailer
The interior lights of your trailer would either be powered by an auxiliary battery in the trailer or straight from the 12 volt accessory circuit of the trailer connector on your tow vehicle. Your best option would be to try and trace the wiring of the lights back to where they end on your trailer to find out how they power. Most likely they get power from the trailer connector. You will want to check out the wiring diagrams in the link I attached to find out which style of connector...

  • How to Charge the Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery # HM20008
To charge the Breakaway Kit Replacement 12 V Battery # HM20008 you will need the Tekonsha Two Stage 12 V DC Battery Charger # 2024-07 and access to a vehicle-sized 12V battery. Typically these are installed on a trailer in such a way that they charge as you drive down the road. If you connect this to your vehicle battery then you will get the required power for it to charge. This charger comes with an automatic shut-off feature that will not permit the battery to overcharge. A review...

This 12V battery measures 3-1/2 inches long, 2-3/4 inches wide and 4 inches tall. It is rated for 5 amp hours. I also recommend looking at a charger like the CTEK MULTI US 12V Battery Charger # CTEK56353. This will keep your battery in good shape, especially while in storage, by keeping it topped off and charged when not in use. I have attached...

  • Is There an Expected Battery Life for a Breakaway Kit
There are actually a lot of factors that play into the length of life on a battery like part # HM20008 that it's basically impossible to give a specific amount of days or years that a battery is expected to function at 100%. For example, if your trailer sits for long periods of time (like you mentioned) then it is best to place a charger like part # CTEK56353 if you are sotring it near AC power or the part # PTW2997 if it will be sotred outside to maintain the life of the battery. • Recommended Battery Size for Breakaway Brake System
The battery you use for a break away system needs to be able to power the trailer brakes on full for 15 minutes. A 12 volt battery rated for 5 amp hours is normally used, unless you have 3 axles each with brakes, then you would benefit more from a 9 amp hour battery. However a battery this large would not charge up through the 12 volt circuit coming through the trailer connector. The replacement batteries we carry, # HM20008 and # TK2023 are both rated for 5 amp hours. You can add...

  • Can a Larger Breakaway Battery Be Used to Operate Interior Lights On a Trailer
You will want to use a separate, standard 12 volt deep cycle trailer battery to operate the interior lights. You will NOT want to use the trailer breakaway battery. The breakaway battery is not designed to power other trailer accessories or lighting, it is just designed to operate the breakaway system. The DOT regulations state that a trailer breakaway system needs a dedicated battery. You will be able to maintain a charge on the separate trailer battery by running a 10 gauge power wire...

  • Powering Enclosed Trailer Interior Lights From 12V Battery
Yes, you can power your enclosed trailer's interior lights with a dedicated trailer-mounted battery. For such an application high-efficiency LED-type lighting is ideal since these will draw only a small fraction of the power required by standard incandescent bulbs. As a natural outcome of their efficiency LEDs also produce less heat, which may be a welcome benefit in summer months. A fully-charged 12V battery can power LED lights for many hours between charges but will also work fine...

  • Can a Trailer Breakaway System 12 Volt Battery be Charged Using a Traditional Trickle Charger
A trickle type of charger can be used to charge a break away battery like # HM20008 as long as the charger is designed for a 12 volt battery. You might want to first have the battery tested to see if it has a charge. A local auto parts store can do this for you. You can also pull the pin on the trailer breakaway switch and see if the brakes engage. Sometimes, on the Engager breakaway systems, moisture can cause the indicator to not function properly. If the battery tests fine then you may...

  • Installing a Battery on a Trailer and Wiring it to Run Interior Trailer Lights
I recommend a 12 volt car battery rather than a breakaway battery because you may end up needing the larger battery down the road. What you will do is attach a battery box (see link for options) to the trailer frame. From the trailer side 7-Way connector, there will be a wire attached to the pin in the 11:00 position (if looking at the face of the plug). This is the 12 volt circuit. You can attach that to the positive terminal of the battery. It will maintain the battery but it will...

  • What is the Life Expectancy of a Break Away Battery for a Trailer Break Away System
There are so many factors that can be attributed to battery life that a hard number of years for the life span of a Breakaway Battery like # HM20008 is nearly impossible to determine. In cold weather climates like in the northern United States, the cold will take its toll on the battery and it will not last as long. The same is true for hot climates such as in the Southwestern United States. And there are also marine areas, and/or areas that see a lot of rain. In addition to weather...

Most breakaway batteries are acid batteries and sealed as you mentioned. There are some batteries that have moved to a gel but are also sealed and considered wet. • Could Vehicle Battery in Enclosed Trailer Have Battery Charged While Towing
To put a maintenance charge on the vehicle in your enclosed trailer will require you to tap into the 12 volt power circuit of your 7-way and then run that wire through the trailer to the vehicle battery. To do this you will need to run a 10 gauge wire from the trailer connector to the positive post of the battery. For that you can use the part # 10-1-1 sold by the foot.

On the above 7-Way the green wire is running lights, brown is right turn and brake lights, black is 12 volt that you will run to the battery on the trailer, red is left turn/brake lights, and white is ground. • Can a Breakaway System Battery Charger Charge a Car Battery to Power a Trailer Mounted Winch
There are a couple of different things going on. First, a 12 volt circuit from a trailer connector will not be able to charge a battery, it will only be able to provide a maintenance charge, maintaining the charge level of the battery but not adding anything to it. While it may be sufficient for smaller breakaway batteries, it will not be sufficient for a 12 volt automotive or deep cycle battery. I recommend using a dedicated battery for the breakaway system, like the Engager Trailer...
