Wiring an RV with Separate Brake and Turn Signals to a Chevy HHR with Combined Brake/Turn Signals

Published 10/07/2010

Question:

I have separate brake lights and turn signals on my 07 dodge sprinter based motor-home. They are also separate on the 6-pin wired plug. Im am towing a 07 Chevy HHR that is wired with the flat 4-pin plug. How do I get the brake lights to work on the HHR?

Probably the easiest solution is to first use a 6-Way to 4-Way adapter, like # PK12717, and plug the 6-Way side into the motor home. Next, add a light kit to plug into the 4-Way flat part of the adapter, like Magnetic Towing Light Kit, # RM-2120. Mount the lights on a metal surface on the HHR and you have lights for towing your HHR.

For a more permanent solution, you could install the Tail Light Isolating Diode System with Wiring Harness, # 38955. After installing the diodes, plug the 4-Way into the 4-Way side of the adapter to complete the installation. I have included a link to an installation video for these diodes below.
