Base Plate Flat Towing Equipment Recommendation for 1991 Jeep Wrangler

Updated 05/16/2016 | Published 05/12/2016

Question:

Hi, I have used the search feature to try and figure out what I need for flat towing my 1991 Jeep Wrangler, but I would like some help verifying what you recommend. I would like the tow bar to be the Roadmaster All Terrain RM-522. I would like to know what the difference is between the two base plates for the jeep? There is a 1409-1 and 1409-3. Is one better or more convenient than the other? Also please recommend what the other items I will need, cables, wiring kit etc. Thanks for your assistance.

Functionally speaking, there's no effective difference between the # 1409-1 and the # 1409-3. Both mount to the front face of the bumper. The 1409-1 contains more pieces, but would be less obtrusive looking on the bumper. The 1409-3 has fewer pieces, and would be a bit easier to install, but would be more visible. If having the big piece of metal on the front face of your Jeep bumper doesn't bother you, go with the 1409-3.

The # RM-522 Falcon All-Terrain Tow Bar would work just fine with either base plate. For safety cables, use # RM-643. For a wiring solution that would allow the taillights of the towed vehicle to operate in tandem with those of the RV, I'd recommend the Roadmaster Diode and Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit, part # RM-15247. For a supplemental braking system, I prefer a portable system like the Blue Ox Patriot II, part # BRK2016. A portable system won't require hours of expensive labor to install it.

I'll link you to some helpful FAQ articles. You might also need a high/low adapter to keep the towbar within 3 inches of level. I've linked an article that shows how to determine which one you'll need.
