I have had this product for 4 years and have to replace the cables about once a year due to them breaking. Is this normal, if so, it is getting expensive

I would say that it is not normal to have to replace the Gorilla Lift cables with # GLC1-Q1 very often under normal circumstances and certainly not once a year. If the system is overloaded, mounted outside of its specified range, or the trailer is often in extreme weather conditions (a lot of salt) then that would reduce the lifespan.
The Gorilla Lift # GL1 is rated for up to 300 pounds for tailgates that are 4 to 6 feet tall. The trailer side rail height also needs to be 12 to 24 inches from the trailer bed.
