Can Heavier Leaf Springs Be Used On Tandem-Axle Boat Trailer
Updated 04/26/2016 | Published 04/22/2016 >
Question:
I have a tandem boat trailer with 2 3500 lbs axles. i am replacing the suspension system. the measurements are the 25 1/4 x 1 3/4 on the leafs and they are double eye is there any reason i can not upgrade to the 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 5,000-lb Trailer Axles springs for extra durability? Thank you,

Expert Reply:
You can use heavier-duty leaf springs like part # e44SR on your tandem axle boat trailer. The dimensions of the springs are the same so you will have no problem installing the new springs. The ride may be a bit stiffer with the new springs but they will work just fine on your trailer. Putting heavier springs on your trailer will not increase the weight capacity for the trailer.
Since you mentioned you are replacing the suspension I have attached some links to suspension components that may work great for you. A typical 3500-lb axle is 2-3/8 inches diameter. If you have any questions about a specific item let me know and I will be glad to make some recommendations that will work for you.
