Installing Trailer Hitch On 2012 Toyota RAV4 When Brackets Do Not Line Up With Vehicle Frame

Question:

I received my etrailer receiver for my 2012 Toyota Rav4 and have made an initial attempt at installation. The distance between the mounting brackets needs to be expanded 1/4 - 1/2 inch in order for all of the mounting holes to align properly. What is the best way to make the adjustment?

At times when shipped, the mounting brackets on a trailer hitch will shift a little and need to be coaxed for alignment.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to align the holes. Our installers will use a small rod to insert through the hole in the bracket and line it up with the mating hole on the vehicle frame. Sometimes another person will help with inserting the hardware while pressure is applied. You do not want to beat on the hitch with a hammer to try and get it to bend to shape, or use a method which would damage the welds or stress the trailer hitch.
