Bike Rack Recommendation for 2005 Honda CR-V to Carry Heavier Bikes

Updated 04/12/2016 | Published 04/09/2016

Question:

We need a bike rack for our Honda 2005 CR-V, with external spare tire. We have two bikes, each a bit OVER 35 pounds. We want a rack that will swing or tilt away. Many seem to have weight limits of 70 pounds. If we look at a 4 bike rack, will that allow us sufficient weight room, or is the 35 pound per bike rating somehow not cumulative?

The bike rack to use for heavier bikes is the Thule T2 Pro XTR part # TH69TX. This rack has a capacity of 60 lbs per bike and would clear the rear mounted spare of your Honda CR-V easily. It can be set up for 2 or 4 bikes.

The reason some racks have lower capacities is the capacity of the cradles that hold the bikes. They individually have their own capacities. That is why a 4 bike rack will have a higher total capacity but then say it can only carry 35 lbs per bike. This one carries 60 pounds per bike, with a maximum capacity of 160 pounds so they can't all be 60 pound bikes. This rack can be used as a 2 bike rack or a 4 bike rack. When set up as a 2-bike rack, its max capacity is 120 pounds.

If you needed a hitch you would also want the part # 75690.
