Weight Distribution Rated Hitch Extender for Towing Horse Trailer Behind Truck with In-Bed Camper
Updated 04/12/2016 | Published 04/08/2016 >
Question:
Hello, I am on the search for a 12inch hitch extender so that I can tow my horse trailer with my cabover camper which extends to the end of my tailgate. My trailer hitch is a weight distributing system. The BX88264 seems ideal based on the weight ratings, but I note that it says it is not to be used towing a trailer. Is that correct? With the 10K weight rating, what else could it be used for? If this extender is not recommended, what do you recommend? I dont want or need one longer than 12. Thanks in advance

The Blue Ox # BX88264 hitch extender isn't designed to tow a trailer. It's meant for use with a rolling load like flat towing a vehicle behind a motorhome. Because the extender moves the load out by a foot, using the extender lowers the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by half. Therefore, it wouldn't work for towing your horse trailer, due to the reduced tongue weight capacity. You'd encounter this issue with any other extender of this type.
There are two safe methods of using an extension with a weight distribution system. If your truck has a Class V hitch with a 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch receiver opening, you could use a Reese Titan Hitch Box Extension, part # RP45292. The shortest length this extender could be cut to is 24 inches. At that length, when used with weight distribution, you'd have a 8000 lb capacity. If your truck doesn't already have a Class V hitch with the 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch receiver opening, you'd need to install one. If you could provide me with the year, make and model of your truck, I'd be happy to recommend a hitch.
Another option would be to use a 21 inch long TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extension, part # TLE1521. In order to use the SuperTruss, you'd need to install a TorkLift SuperHitch Trailer Hitch. When used with a SuperHitch and a weight distribution system, you'll have a 14,000 lb capacity with a 1400 lb tongue weight capacity. Once again, if you'd provide your vehicle year, make and model, I'd be happy to make a specific hitch recommendation.
