If you do not have a 4-way connector on your Passat that is the first thing you will need. I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56374. This is a custom harness that allows you to quickly and easily install a 4-way trailer connector on your Volkswagen Passat. This T-Connector plugs directly into your existing wiring. Powered converter reduces strain on wiring system and is made using SMT to ensure superior performance.
I have attached a link to an installation video for this wire harness on a Passat you can check out.
The next item you need is part # ETBC7. This plugs into your 4-way trailer connector and with additional wiring gives you the 7-way trailer connector you can use with your trailer. I have attached a drawing that shows how to run the wiring for a brake controller.
When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
If you do not have a brake controller I recommend the P3, part # 90195. This one of our most popular brake controllers because it is easy to install and operate.
