Troubleshooting Installation of Rack'Em Double Barrel Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist RA27C
Updated 04/05/2016 | Published 04/01/2016 >
Question:
Bought this lift assist for my trailer, and installed it according to the video and instruction leaflet. It all looks OK, but still too heavy to lower, and especially to raise up? Also, there doesnt seem to be any indication of spring action. Tried putting the clips in other holes, but no difference. Should the chain be short and taut? Any ideas about what is wrong?

First you'll want to make sure your tailgate's weight is within the 200-lb maximum capacity of the Rack'Em Double Barrel Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist # RA-27C. Using the top hole on the tailgate bracket will provide the most leverage but note this bracket's top edge must be 44-inches above the trailer deck. Also, note that this unit is intended for use on trailers whose top rail is between 10- and 15-inches above the trailer deck height.
If all of the above conditions were met in your installation you can try shortening the chain length by moving the clip to another chain link. You can also try pulling out the drive chain a bit to pre-load tension on the spring.
