Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Updated 03/10/2016 | Published 03/09/2016

Question:

I am purchasing a RAV4 Hybrid, and the car specs say it can only handle a tongue weight of 150 lbs. What is causing that limit? Is that assuming a factory towing package? Or can I get more capacity simply by choosing a sturdier hitch? My only purpose for this is for a bike rack, but I would like the option of a 4-bike rack vs a 2-bike rack.

When looking at capacities you will always go by the lowest rated component in the system. Since the tongue weight capacity of the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is 150 pounds that is the capacity you must go by even if a hitch can handle more.

Since you want to carry 4 bikes on a hitch I recommend Class III trailer hitch # e98864 because it fits Hybrid models, it doesn't have any special requirements for bike rack use like the Curt hitch, and the 2-inch receiver is compatible with many accessories.

The 150-pound capacity should not be a problem if the bike rack used is light enough. I recommend the Saris Bones, # SA884, because it weighs just 22 pounds. With it installed the left-over capacity will be 128 pounds or 32 pounds per bike.

I have linked a video showing installation of the hitch for you.
