Question:

since there is a 12 volt outlet in back area of 2016 Cherokee, could I use that power vs running line to battery?

Expert Reply:

Even though attaching the power wire to a 12 volt outlet would make installation a little faster, the trailer wiring harness # HM11142464 needs to be connected directly to the vehicle battery on your 2016 Jeep Cherokee. This is so it is fused by itself and so the harness can maintain its level of isolation from the vehicle wiring protecting it from short circuits and possible costly repairs.

I have included a link to a video showing installation of wiring harness # 118605 which installs the same way as the Hopkins harness for you.

Routing the power wire just takes a little extra time and I have included a link to a help article I wrote with some tips on routing the power wire.
