The Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13540, for the 2001 Ford Explorer is designed to fit around the factory spare tire. If your 16 inch spare is OEM from the factory or smaller, then you will not have to permanently remove the spare. I have included a link to the installation instructions for this hitch below.
