Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 1997 Ford Explorer XLT

Updated 06/27/2015 | Published 06/26/2015

Question:

We have a 97 Ford Explorer XLT 4-dr with 15inch tires. A search of recommended class 3 hitches results in 3 manufacturers and many hitches. Although we wont be towing more than 1500 lbs, we may attach a hitch mounted cargo carrier in the future - hence the desire for a class 3, 2inch receiver. We just need to know which ones will fit our truck for sure, without welding and also still be able to carry our 15inch spare underneath. Also, a wiring recommendation would be nice since we will have to do that as well. Thank you so much.

The Draw-Tite Class III, part # 75083 would be an excellent choice, unless your Explorer has the 16 inch spare tire, otherwise you'd want to use the # 75096 which is compatible with the full sized spare tire. The hitch bolts into place using existing holes in the frame, so no drilling or welding would be required.

My favorite cargo carrier we offer is the Curt 24 x 59 Folding Carrier, part # C18151. This carrier has lots of storage space, is reasonably priced and is capable of folding flat up against the rear of the vehicle when unloaded.

For wiring, I'd recommend the Tow Ready # 118345. A ball mount like # D-4, Hitch Pin and Clip, # PC3, and a 2 inch # 63845 or 1-7/8 inch # 19260 (depending on what your trailer coupler uses) would complete your towing system.
