Question:

Hi I have a flat deck trailer rated for 14000 pounds. I am interested in a weight distributing hitch. The trailer has a 10 inch I-beam frame. Which products would work well with this? instead of a boxed frame Thanks

To choose a properly tuned weight distribution system for your trailer you will need to go by the total effective tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the measured tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

If your coupler is mounted to the bottom of the 10-inch I-beam, then I recommend the Reese weight distribution system # RP66131. The gross towing weight is 15,000 pounds and tongue weight 800-1,500 pounds.

To use the heavy duty trunnion weight distribution system # RP66131, you will need to have a steel plate 5 or 6 inches wide welded, by an experienced welder, at 30 inches on center from the center of the hitch ball. Before modifying the trailer frame you will need to check with the trailer manufacturer to see if this will create an unsafe condition, or void your trailer warranty. Once the plate is welded you could then use the bolt on weight distribution chain hanger kit # RP58305 to attach the weight distribution system to the frame.

You will also need a weight distribution shank like # RP54970, and a 2-5/16 inch diameter hitch ball # 63836 (capacity 14,000 pounds).
