Do the Tow Vehicle Tires and Trailer Tires have to All be the Same Type of Tire Bias or Radial

Published 01/21/2015

Question:

my tow vehicle is equipped with radial tires. Is it OK if I install bias tires on my single axle utility trailer on which I put only a limited low mileage yearly. I have seen in one of your answers that IDEALLY I should use the same tire construction on both tow and towed vehicles. I am wondering if the trailer will have a tendency to sway or swerve severely if I have to steer much or rapidly if necessary. with bias tires on trailer and radial tires on the car. Thank you very much for your answer.

Helpful Expert Reply:

As long as the tires on your trailer are the same construction type on both sides (either bias ply or radial) it will be fine. The tire style doesn't have to match what the vehicle has. Most all vehicle tires, with some exceptions, are radial nowadays anyway.
