Question:

I read that you recommend the drawtite 24847 over the Curt 11276 for the 2011 Prius, in part because it is lighter and in part because the use of a stabilizing strap which could damage the spoiler is not required for the drawtite warranty. My boyfriend and I installed the drawtite on his Prius and found that we couldnt my Yakima highlite 2 rack far enough into the hitch so that we could the safety pin. Apparently, the drawtite has a bump-out inside the hitch that acts as a stop. I need a hitch for my 2011 Prius yes, we each own a 2011 Prius and am not crazy about having to drill an extra hole into my bike carrier so that I can use the safety pin. Im leaning toward the Curt hitch, but dont want to purchase that if it has the same ion issue. Will the Yakima highlite 2 sufficiently into the Curt hitch to use the safety pin? Thoughts? Any other hitches I should consider for this car with this bike carrier?

The issue you are having with your Yakima Highlite 2 hitch-mount bike rack # Y02438 has to do with an incompatible hitch class designation. This Yakima rack is classified as a Class II bike rack, meaning that it can be used in a Class II hitch. The only hitch offered for your 2011 Prius is a light-duty Class I hitch that is incompatible with this particular rack. Even though Class I and Class II racks use the same 1-1/4-inch size shank Class I hitches have a stop in them to prevent using a rack that would overstress and potentially damage the hitch or the vehicle. Please refer to the linked article on hitch classes for additional information. I do suggest the Draw-Tite # 24847 since this hitch requires no strap and since it is the lowest-cost option.

Since only Class I hitches are offered for the Prius you will need to choose a Class I 2-bike rack in order to avoid this compatibility issue. I do not recommend attempting to modify your bike rack or your hitch as this could pose safety and/or liability concerns. Only 2 bikes can be carried on a Class I hitch.
