High Weight Capacity Hitch and Weight Distribution System Recommendation for a 2000 Ford Excursion
Updated 01/05/2015 | Published 01/04/2015 >
Question:
Hi, Does this hitch have a 1200 lb tongue wt capacity without using a weight distribution hitch set up? My factory hitch has a 500 TW and 10000 wt with weight distribution hitch and my boat trailer has close to a 900 TW. Thanks

The maximum tongue weight the Curt Hitch part # C14011 can handle with or without weight distribution is 1,200 lbs.
This hitch has been confirmed to fit your 2000 Ford Excursion but you will need to check the owners manual for the vehicle to determine if your vehicle also has a high enough capacity for your trailer. Upgrading to a higher capacity hitch won't necessarily give you more weight capacity, unless the hitch was the weakest component in the setup. Basically, the lowest rated component in a setup is the overall capacity.
Based on the weight of your trailer a weight distribution system would be highly recommended.
The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.
Since you said your trailer has a tongue weight of 900 lbs I would recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66084 if you don't have a system already. This system has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs so your tongue weight would fall perfectly in the middle of that and this system features the only sway control on the market that works to prevent sway before it starts.
