Video Transcript for Tow Ready Wiring TR20141 Review

Today we're going to review part number TR20141. This is the Tow Ready 7 way to 4 way and 5 way adapter LED lamp out bypass adapter for the Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes, and Porsche. This adapter was designed to work with the Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes, and Porsche vehicles and any other vehicles that otherwise not compatible when towing a trailer with LED lights. Basically on those vehicles, there's not enough draw from the LED lights on the trailer and the vehicle thinks there's a bulb out and will produce a warning lamp. This adapter actually has load resisters on the inside and that will simulate additional loads so that it does not happen and the lights will work on your trailer. This adapter will plug into your factor 7 way on your tow vehicle and allow you to plug in back here either a 4 way or a 5 way connector on a trailer. You'll notice there is 5 plugs and the 4 way, you just eliminate that end one. You always use the ground one, so when you plug in the 4 way you'll just not be using that end plug right there. That should do it for the review on part number TR20141.

The Tow Ready 7 way to 4 and 5 way adapter LED lamp out bypass adapter for the Audi, Volkswagen, Mercedes, and Porsche vehicles. .

I give the product an A++ and I give etrailer.com A++. Great product from a great company. I am not the owner's cousin or a friend of someone who works there - I am a very satisfied customer. When I need to purchase something, I want to purchase with confidence. etrailer, you are awesome and I feel so good about my experience, I feel like it's my duty to let others know. Here's the final version of my story (you can get my full inquiry and answered question here https://www.etrailer.com/question-322654.html): I put LED tail lights on my 14' Lund Adventure fishing boat trailer. The old incandescent lights burned out when they get wet - not a good feature on a boat trailer that needs to be backed into water to launch the boat... I decided that waterproof sealed LED lights were the best option because the bulbs won't get wet (duh), are brighter than incandescent bulbs, and will last for a long time which means less time messing with trailer lights and more time taking the kids fishing. Here's the rub: LED lights don't draw enough power from my 2011 Mercedes Benz GL350 electrical system for the SUV to even recognize that a trailer is plugged in. The Mercedes needs to detect a load on the electrical system in order for it to send adequate power to the trailer. LED lights simply don't draw enough juice for it to work. When I initially plugged in the LED lights, they lit up - but just barely. The brake lights and turn indicators didn't work. The running lights seemed to work but they were very dim. After figuring out what was going on, I determined that the LED lights were operating on the test current running through the system (testing for bulb faults as a safety feature on the vehicle) but didn't draw enough for the car to detect the trailer. I sent a message to etrailer.com and got a terrific response. To verify what was going on, an electronic wizard friend came over with his test gear and tested the system and everything looked like it was working - yet it still didn't work. He connected up a 25W resistor in the system at the trailer harness (he could have put it anywhere in the system) and it fooled the SUV into thinking that an incandescent bulb (higher wattage than LEDs) was drawing on the system. Everything worked - but I didn't want to have a resistor duct taped to the top of the trailer. I ended up adding a new ground wire to each rear LED light because I knew that if I didn't deal with the issue now, I would be dealing with it later because the only thing keeping the lights grounded were thin strands of 22 gauge wire bolted to the trailer frame. Adding a ground wire individually to each tail light took 15 minutes and was well worth the extra work because now everything meaningful was sealed and was less likely to rot after repeated trips to the salt water to fish. I ordered the TR20141 and received it in 6 days (sent UPS Ground). This 7-pin to 4/5-pin adapter (I only use 4 of the 5 pins) has built in resistors to fool my SUV into thinking incandescent lighting is connected thus drawing enough power to allow my Merc to detect the trailer. I removed my old resistor, reconnected the wiring as it was before (now with my extra 2 ground wires), plugged in the TR20141 and P R E S T O - it works awesome!! It was an inexpensive solution and works perfectly. As a side note, etrailer.com does sell the waterproof resistors that you can hook up in line in the wiring harness but I prefer an integrated solution rather than a resistor dongle hanging off the wiring harness or mounted to the trailer. I like KISS solutions (keep it simple, stupid). Thank you everyone at etrailer!! I look forward to purchasing more from you because you give me confidence in your products, your company, and in mankind. Okay, maybe notsomuch with mankind as a whole :-). 574819

I purchased this product because I have trouble plugging my flat connector into my expedition every time I want to hook up. A process that should take 10 seconds sometimes takes over 5 minutes and requires channel locks. I ordered it and it showed up as expected. Today I plugged my trailer's flat connector into this product and then plugged this product into my expedition in 5 seconds. It fits perfectly and functions perfectly. I will never remove this from my trailer. It makes hooking up a breeze. I love it!! 570805

I purchased this adapter after finding that the lights on a rental trailer would not work using a standard adapter with my 2010 Mercedes GL. A bit of research seemed to indicate that the vehicle computer was not not compatible with LED lights on the trailer. On a recent trailer rental, the lights worked perfectly with our first attempt using the new adapter. I am very happy with the service from etrailer, and with the performance of their product. 558372

No issues with Adaptor. The only issue is with the Mercedes GL550 monitoring system still at times shows a left turn signal out when connected to the LED trailer lights. When disconnected, the light goes off. Read on other forums that this happens with this particular vehicle. As far as the trailer lights working when connected, they do work fine.

I bought this for my Mercedes GL550 to work with the LED lights on my trailer and it worked great. I had tried a few standard ones and the they didn’t work right due to the low voltage draw with LED lights and German vehicles. Bought this one based on some threads I read on the internet and it worked like a charm. 549959

Simple solution to an annoying problems - my trailer had LED lights and the turn signals would blink ultra-fast; also, my tow vehicle - 2007 VW Touareg - would constantly tell me the trailer lights were not working properly. My trailer had a flat 4-pin connector and the vehicle had both flat-4 and round 7-pin connectors. I plugged the adapter into the vehicle and the trailer into the adapter and everything worked perfectly. The only alteration I had to make was a simple cut in my trailer's flat-4 connector so it would slide onto the adapter (the adapter is setup for either a 4-pin or 5-pin but the 4th pin on your 4-pin connector must be exposed to fit - a simple cut with a utility knife removed the end on the trailer connector). 183251

A year ago I purchased this adapter to connect a 2006 Mercedes Benz ML 350 to a small tag along trailer that I had recently upgraded by replacing the original trailer light bulbs with LED trailer lights. When I connected the new LED trailer lights to the vehicle, the lights would not illuminate properly. After checking my wiring and doing some research, I discovered that this Mercedes had problems detecting the low current associated with the LED bulbs, essentially causing the vehicle to "think" that bulbs were not illuminating properly. I purchased this adapter from etrailer and the vehicle lights and the LED trailer lights have functioned perfectly ever since. I wish all fixes were this easy! 253742

On my Touareg (2004 model) with a trailer with LED lights hooked up, I would get "CHECK LIGHTS" flashing on the dash and an annoying DING! from the dash every 15 seconds. That's enough to drive you mad! A Cayenne or Audi Q7 would do the same, fyi. After researching online, this seemed to be the adapter I needed to add the right resistance to prevent the warning from appearing, and it worked! No more warning, no more annoying chime. And the price was great too. Thumbs up! 115646

I have a 2001 BMW E53 X5 with the factory tow package. It has a 7 blade round connecotr, however my tailer for the jetski and jet boat both have the 4 flat connector. None of the trailers have LED at the moment and I doubt that I will ever convert them to LED. I need an adapter connector so that I can connect the trailer lights to the BMW connector.

I called and asked if this would work for an '06 Range Rover Sport SC. "Oh, sure." was the response. First of all it doesn't even fit through the opening in the bumper. However I was so desperate for a solution to the "flashing" problem, I partially removed the bumper cover so I could insert the plug. Sadly.......It doesn't stop the "flashing". In other words......It Don't Work!!! 99913

Could not get tow dolly lights (LED) to work correctly from MB Sprinter Chasis RV. Regular 7 way to 4 way flat adapter did not work. No one had a clue...found this adapter on your web sight. Looked like the solution. Trailer shipped immediately, I received in 3 days, plugged it in and now everything works as it should. Wish more people knew about this problem and carried this adapter. There are increasing numbers of trailers with LED lights as well as Mercedes Sprinter Chasis RV's. 261566

This resolved my issues with my 2007 BMW X5 3.0si. My trailer LED lights had just been blinking whenever the 4-pin flat plug was plugged into the round BMW adapter. The brake and turn signal lights still worked, but when nothing else was going on, or even when the lights were turned off, all the trailer lights just flashed constantly. When I first plugged this in, the lights did the same thing. I unplugged it, reseated the 4-pin flat plug, then reseated the round adapter, and the trailer lights were still flashing. I turned on the car lights and tried the brake and signal lights. Trailer lights still flashing. I turned the headlights off, and the trailer lights went off! Brake lights and turn signals worked, and no flashing lights! Turned the headlights back on, clearance lights and tail lamps worked and no flashing! Brake lights and turn signals worked and no flashing! Cycled through everything a couple of times, and all was good - guess it just needed to get used to everything, but now it is working great! This $15 piece saved a $4,000 investment, so I'm quite happy! It also showed up a day faster than expected, which made it even better. Pat was a very big help getting it selected and getting it here faster! 126557

Excellent solution to my problem. Have RV with MB 3500 chassis. I needed to obtain power for an LED lighted license plate holder I added via an attachment to the rear ladder of RV when carrying bikes and bike cover which hid the normal license plate location. I wanted to use the normal trailer hitch plug for the power source. However, it only registered 1 or 2 volts D/C. This adapter fooled the MB electrical system into thinking a trailer was attached which allowed the MB electrical system to release full 12-13 volt power to the trailer hitch plug. Also, the LED lights didn't flicker and they go on and off as I turn the MB lights on and off at the front dashboard. Very cool! Needed to also purchase the four plug adapter to plug into the back of this adapter and then the four plug adapter is wired to the LED license plate holder. 466391

Driving a '13 Escape, factory trailer tow package, pulling an Aluma tilt trailer w/ LED lights. When initiating signal light, it flashes rapidly w/ dash warning of trailer bulb failure + audible alarm. Also, stop/tail lights flash on/off as if hazard lights were on. I've researched several 'fixes' for a vehicle that is not programmed for pulling a trailer w/ LED lights: 1. connect in load resistors; 2. use wiring harness compatible w/ LED lights; 3. Ford has their own fix TSB-13-1-5 (which rewires the vehicle trailer tow package + adds different module. Not a good fix in my opinion). From etrailer.com, I've ordered p/n: 30717 (Adaptor 4 pole to 7 pole vehicle end trailer connector), AND p/n: TR20141 (7 way to 5 and 4 way trailer adaptor for VW, Audi, Porsche towing trailers w/ LED lights). P/N: 30717 does require you to connect the white wire (ground) to a ground point (frame or metal bracket) on the tow vehicle. I did this with a flat 2 way connector I purchased at the local hardware store (just join both wires, they're going to ground anyway). In conclusion, yes, there are two connectors back there to support, I've just used small/short bungee cords to hold the connectors to the receiver hitch & the trailer tongue. I've also used dielectric grease between the different connectors. All in all, the trailer lights now work as they should, no vehicle dash warnings, no problems! Thanks etrailer for your support. Finally happy towing. 152198

If you have a European SUV. Audi Porsche BMW Meecedes etc this will work like a charm. I bought a trailer with LED lights and when I connected it to my vehicle the trailer lights would not work. The would flash or not come on at all. It is because of the low current that LED lights produce. The vehicle sensors thing there is a light out and tries to locate it. This adapter bypasses the vehicle current sensor and allows the lights to function correctly. I tried shopping local but nobody had it. This was shipped fast and exactly what I needed. Thanks. 175517

This plug was purchased for my 2010 Porsche Cayenne S and works perfectly with my boat trailer that has LED lights. I originally had a more generic plug and the LED lights on the trailer seemed way too bright. I would also get a momentary warning about the lights system when starting the car. Now that I have this specific plug, I no longer get the warnings and the trailer lights operate at the proper intensity. Exactly what I needed for my set-up! 98630

I have a 2012 Mercedes GL550. Using the standard 7/4 adapter the trailer lights would flash, cancel the blind spot sensors and trip the bulb monitor. After researching this the problem lies all over the place and not with one model either. The blind spot mirror issue is in the owners manual but not trailering section. Using this adapter it stops the flashing trailer lights but the trailer lamp out persists on the dash. This problem is inherent to many late model German automobiles on a hit and miss basis. VW, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. On my 2011 GL450 this problem was not present, but on my 2012 GL550 it is. Mercedes was on no help at least my servicing dealer was of no help. The selling dealer said he knew of the problem but recommended a trailer shop for further help. The trailer shop says it's the vehicle and not the trailer as they sell to these customers all the time. I've not seen too many of these buyers pulling trailers! They suggested installing resistors in the trailer wiring. I'm not inclined to doing so. The trailer works great on my other two vehicles. The Benz is what the problem is! But like everything in Benz fashion. I'll be dead and gone before they even care there's a problem! 214690

From the start I have had issues with trailer lights on my Porsche Cayenne Turbo and whatever product I tried, it did not fix the problem. The plugs I ordered from www.Etrailer.com plugged right in and fixed the problem between the LED trailer lighting and my Porsche. I hear it is a common issue on German vehicles, so I highly recommend this product to anyone. I couldn't be happier with the product itself AND the customer service from the staff all the way from the order, to confirming delivery. Thanks again! This was the fix for towing a trailer with LED's from my Mercedes ML550, which the dealership knew nothing about and only said the SUV was good so problem must be in the trailer. 145652

My BMW dealer was the same way. No idea why the LED trailer lights wouldnt work with the standard BMW adapter. Even though this is apparently a well-known problem with German and apparently Swedish, from some of the other reviews cars. When eTrailers solved my problem with this adapter, I talked with my BMW dealers service chief, and he didnt seem interested at all. Oh well.

You NEED this if you have a Mercedes SUV and plan to pull a trailer with LED lights. It will not work with a straight 7 to 4/5 adapter that does not have the load resistors. Mercedes (and many other makers) have made the vehicles way too smart for their own good. With a standard connector you will get all manner of alarms. Not will you get alarms for bulb failures on the trailer, but also since it uses the presence of a plug in the trailer connector to put the drive train into trailer mode, it will keep dithering between trailer and non trailer mode. This also means that you have to remove the adapter if you are not actively pulling a trailer. This is not a problem with the adapter, it is due to the software in the drive train controls. 248056

If you did swap all your trailed light for led, and you happend to have a very nice expensive car/truck that wont see the trailer anymore because there isn't enough power draw by the led. Then this is exactly what you want, don't start welding resistor into the new system you just installed. Just get that adapter and problem solved! All light are working. Then if you tow another trailer with led you are will equipped as well and if you lend your trailer to someone who doesn't have that expensive trailer sensor, then everything will word as expected! :) Thanks! 514089

This solved the problem! I recently moved my license plate to a new location on the spare tire on the back door of my van. The new license plate spare tire mount included a white license plate running light as well as a new third brake light. Both were LEDs. I wanted to get things up and running quickly and figured rather than fishing around inside to find and tap into my wiring harnesses, because I have a trailer hitch I would go ahead and wire up a trailer wiring harness connector I had lying around. However, when I plugged it into my harness adapter at the hitch, nothing worked. Just faint flickering. Googled the problem with LEDs on trailers and came across this. • Using an Adapter to Tow a Trailer with LED Lights with a 2012 Mercedes GL450
  • Yes. If your trailer with LED lights has a 5-Way or 4-Way flat connector then you would use adapter # TR20141. If the trailer has a 7-Way connector you would need # C57003. These adapters have load resistors in them that provide additional power draw so the vehicle thinks there are incandescent lights on the trailer. The other option is to install load resistors, # P230004A, in line on each circuit on the trailer wiring behind its connector. You can also use this method if the resistors...

  • Trailer Lights Do Not Work with 2014 Chevy Silverado But Do Work with 2008 Chevy Silverado
  • The trailer connector on the 2014 Chevy Silverado will be the same as previous generations because it is an industry standard. Factory integrated trailer brake controllers sometimes will not work with electric over hydraulic braking systems so if that is what is on the trailer then that could be the problem. The solution would be to install an aftermarket brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes like the P2, # 90885, using wiring harness # 3016. But since...

  • Trailer Lights Not Working Using 4- to 7-Way Adapter on a 2012 Mercedes GL450
  • If the trailer has LED lights then the issue isn't the adapter or the trailer. It is the vehicle. The 2012 Mercedes GL450 and other German vehicles do not work well with trailers that have LED lights. This is because LED lights do not draw enough power for the tow package on the vehicle to recognize them. Usually this is accompanied by a bulb out sensor light in the vehicle. The fix is to use a special adapter such as # TR20141. Or, if this is the adapter you are using then adding load...

  • Troubleshooting Factory Trailer Wiring that has No Power
  • My first thought would be blown fuses, so I would be sure to double check all fuses and relays related to the tow package. This information will be listed in your owners manual. Check to ensure you are getting power at the trailer connector on your vehicle. Using a circuit tester like # 40376, test the vehicle side connector since it's factory trailer wiring. Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector...

  • Adapter for 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL450 Towing Trailer With LED Lighting to Avoid False Short Indicator
  • The answer is that you are needing the TowReady # TR20141. This adapter is used because LED's draw such low power that a lot of times on German vehicles your lamp out indicator will illuminate giving you the impression that you have an issue, when in reality you do not. With this adapter you will be able to tow your trailer with your 2010 MB GL450 without a problem. The adapter has built in load resistors that create more draw so the sensors think everything is working normally. If...

  • LED Light Bar and Hitch Light Cause Error Warnings and Disable Backup Features on 2015 Ford F-150
  • The issue might be that the LED lights do not draw enough power and it is confusing the computer on your 2015 Ford F-150. If you accessories plug into a 4-Way then you could use adapter # TR20141 which has built in load resistors to add more load to the system so it won't confuse the computer. If they plug into a 7-Way we have a similar adapter, # C57003. There may be other ways to disable those alerts or to have manual control over them but you may need to check with a Ford technician...

  • 7-Way to 4-Pole Trailer Connector Adapter for 2013 Porsche Cayenne
  • If your Cayenne has the 7-way connector, you will simply need an adapter to convert it to a 4-pole. Because your Cayenne is equipped with a bulb-out sensor, if your trailer has LED lamps you will need to use an adapter with a resistor in it like part # TR20141. LED lamps draw very little power, and fool the bulb-out sensor into thinking a bulb is burned out. This will make the turn signals hyper-flash. If your trailer uses incandescent lamps, you can use any of the other 7-way to 4-pole...

With that said it is best to test the connector using a circuit tester such as # ALL640595 while someone sits in the truck and runs through the lighting functions. On the trailer, the 4-Way will have the one covered pin as the...

  • Solution for Newer Ford with Bulb Out Error Message When Using LED Hitch Cover
  • This is a problem we normally see with German vehicles when they try to tow a trailer with LED lights. The issue is that the lower amperage draw of the LED lights is just enough to confuse the vehicle that it is drawing too much and because of that it wants to tell you that you have a bulb out on your vehicle. Normally the fix for this is to use the # TR20141 which has diodes in it that increase the amperage draw to what an incandescent bulb would draw on a trailer which eliminates the...

I would normally recommend this for a situation like yours. But we have had feedback with other Land Rover owners who have reported that this product did not work with their trailer with LED taillights. The best recommendation I could make for you would be to replace the LED taillights of your trailer with incandescent...

  • Troubleshooting LED Utility Trailer Lighting on a 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL450
  • Good news, you are correct in that the Tow Ready # TR20141 adapter will fix your 2011 Mercedes-Benz GL450 to work with your LED trailer lights. Some makes of cars are more sensitive to the LEDs and this adapter contains a resister that's needed to accommodate that sensitivity. With the # TR20141 adapter it will end up taking you from a 7-way to a 4-way, but if your trailer is a 7-way plug I'd recommend the # C57003. The Curt adapter has the same resister but allows you to still have...

It is specifically designed to work on a 2007 and newer Volkswagen Touareg when towing a trailer that is equipped with LED lights. Your Touareg will need to already have a 7-Way trailer connector and this this adapter will plug into it. The 5-Way trailer connector will then plug into the back of the adapter and that will be all you need.

  • Solution for Backup Sensor Alerts on a 2014 BMW X5 When Carrying a Bike Rack

So the load resistors in the 7-Way to 5-Way and 4-Way Trailer Adapter # TR20141 that you referenced would trick the vehicle into thinking a trailer is connected and and the sensors would not activate because of the brake controller. Another trick that people use with your vehicle is to tape over the sensors with masking tape.

  • Fix Potential Hyper Flashing On 2017 Land Rover Discovery
  • I understand your concern that some newer vehicles have to recognize that a trailer is plugged into the connector in order for the towing functions to activate. When a trailer has LED lights the power draw is very low, but that's one advantage of LED lights. However since the power draw is so low the vehicle doesn't recognize the trailer and therefore doesn't turn on the towing features. Another cause could be that the 2017 Land Rover Discovery recognizes the lights being on the circuit...

This will carry your lighting and reverse lockout signals in the 5-pole format. If this does not work for you the other option is to wire in load resistors in front of each LED light on the trailer.
