Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located either behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail light assemblies or behind the rear bumper along the frame rail.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Went through a couple of these harness did not work. On my wives suv. Inline Fuse kept blowing ground was good correct fuses used and wires /plugged in correctly it just didn’t work.they sent me a replacement and it didn’t work either. I bought a hitch as well and that worked as it should though I can’t use it because of lights not working properly.A small truck come up that I couldn’t pass on and use that for towing which I bought another hitch from here and a wiring harness that actually worked. So if you buy one and it blows fuses the wire harness will probably not work even if replaced just send it back and go a different rout.

Super simple plug and play, impossible to mess it up. I forgot to look at the included materials like the zip ties and double sided tape to mount the box. I used my own materials, and found an exposed bolt where you can attach a 10 mm nut. Worked immediately, just make sure to find a good grounding point. Only way to make it even better is to bring your own plastic conduit to cover up the colorful wires.

So far good thanks. Do you all make one for a 2000 year model pick up truck

Fairly easy to install the receiver by myself. I cheated and used a motorcycle lift to help get it in place and hold it.

Still functioning as it should.

Reliable, strong, easy to install. Fit perfectly

Only one of the lights worked on my boat trailer. Will keep trying to see what the problem is. Might be that I need to reposition the ‘Sender’ onto the trailer so that it can have a more direct access to the lights. Perhaps the boat is interfering with the signal?

Nicely built and easy to install. Pretty intuitive once you see the connectors. Came with a screw for the ground lug, but I connected it to an existing bolt using an M6 nut.

That's my kind of wiring. I shopped around for installing trailer wiring. Prices were as high as $100. ! This kit for my Toyota Tacoma cost $35. I loosened four bolts, drilled in a ground screw. Plug and pull wire and done. I was able to pull the wired to the far side throughout the hollow receiver hitch. Didn't even need the zip ties. Great company. Thanks

1996 Toyota T100 Pickup

Was purchased for my T100 and it clicked right in to OEM harness. Was able to wrap it to existing harness for a clean look, and trailers now show both running and brake lights.

It worked great in the end, but the instructions were unclear so I had to rewire it.

So easy I did it from the ground. I found it is not necessary to unhook all of the connections and remove the taillights. It took about 30 minutes

2005 Toyota Tacoma

My pickup had a new frame installed due to a manufacturer's recall. During the installation the old wiring for the trailer lights was taken out. I didn't want to pay for a commercial company to reinstall a wiring kit after I saw how easy this system was for installation. The Curt custom fit vehicle wiring was as easy to install as claimed. I have limited mechanical experience so I would say anyone who can read directions and has a few tools can do this.

I purchased a wiring harness a year ago for my 2013 Toyota Tacoma Pickup to haul my utility trailer. The installation instructions were very simple and clear. I installed the harness within an hour without any problems. It's working great when I need it and would recommend this product and any other from Etrailer. I have purchased many items from Etrailer thru the years and find the videos and other instructions very helpful with the installation. Great prices, great products and above all great support!

Wire length was perfect . Plenty of slack . The directions are inside the package and are simple . Vague on a few little parts but if you search out the answers it’s simple . The lights on my truck worked after installing just as they did prior to the job and I will test the u it tomorrow when my tester arrives , or if I just back up to my boat . I loved the included zip ties to get the wires neat , and the whip is long enough to put literally anywhere . I’d buy this again for sure . The connectors snapped in solid as I would expect for a quality product . So far a great purchase .

This product failed and it was a pain in the ass to get it all worked out as far as the warranty thing goes … understandable since people scam all the time but man , I wasn’t too happy about the process . The new one works fine and has worked fine and I will for sure be getting a backup unit so if it fails while I’m on the road I’m not stranded because of an easy to fix plug and play part . It was easy to install for me … it seems to be working great at this point and I take my trailer for a drive a few times a month to keep it all working .

It was what I expected, and it did the job! Thank you.

  • Parts Needed to Install a 7-way Trailer Connector and Tow a Trailer with a 2009 Toyota Tacoma
Yes, you can install a 7-way trailer connector on your 2009 Toyota Tacoma. There's a couple of options depending on your trailer. First you're going to need to start with a 4-way flat connector like you've already found. I suggest the Curt # C55513 which plugs into your truck's wiring either behind the taillights or the rear bumper. Once you have the 4-way, if your trailer does not have brakes you can use an adapter, # 37185, to go from the 4-way to provide a 7-way. However, installing...

  • Trailer Lights Don't Work When Headlights are On
The problem you are having is a classic ground issue. If the ground wire to the trailer frame or the tail light grounds are not connected securely to clean, rust and paint free surfaces then when the headlights are turned the extra amperage draw for the running lights will cause all sorts of lighting issues. I would start by removing the ground wire at the trailer coupler and cleaning up the connection point and re-securing it to the trailer frame. Next I would check the ground connection...

  • Why Do the Running Lights on My Camper Only Work When My Headlights are Set to On?
Hello Lois, It’s not uncommon for trailer running lights to work only when the vehicle’s headlights are manually turned on rather than set to Auto. In your case, with your 2009 Chevy Tahoe and a Starcraft pop-up camper, the automatic headlight mode won't fully power the trailer’s taillight circuit unless it’s dark enough for the system to activate completely. When you switch the headlights to the On position, the circuit receives full power, allowing the trailer lights to function properly....

Hi Kirk! I checked with Curt and Tekonsha (the two best wiring harness manufacturers), and there are no exceptions for Hybrid models of the 2025 Toyota RAV4 XSE, which is good. That said, I have found Tekonsha to make the most reliable options, so that is what I recommend. For your RAV4 Hybrid, you will want the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118801. It is possible to install a brake controller on your 1998 Toyota T100 pickup, but there are no custom fit wiring adapters available for that truck. The plug you found under the dash is probably not for a brake controller, but you could test the pins for power to be sure. When we have customers tell us that their trailer lights only work when the vehicle's headlights are off then this is usually a ground issue. Did you check both the trailer side and vehicle side connector?
