Sounds like your Trooper has separate turn signals from the brake lights and what you are trying to do is wire up a trailer connector that is designed for combined circuits. This is a fairly common problem and the solution is to wire in a signal converter like part # RM-732.

The first thing to do is figure out if the problem is on your tow vehicle or your trailer. To test this you'll simply need to use a circuit tester # PTW2992 and check the various pin locations for function. According to Tow Ready, the connection point is located underneath your 1994 Isuzu Trooper on the driver side between the rear wheel and bumper. The plug is hidden as it is attached to the back side of a large rubber grommet. According to the illustrations in the instructions, the grommet should also be behind or otherwise near the exhaust. Do you know the diameter of the holes on the D-Ring mounts that are on the bumper? If so then you could use Blue Ox adapter such as # BX88296 for 7/8 inch diameter if that is the hole size.
