Tow Ready Wiring - 20142

  • Wiring Adapters
  • Single-Function Adapter
  • 7 Blade
  • 7 Blade
  • Plug Only
  • Tow Ready

Designed for use with vehicles that have lamp-out sensors, this adapter ensures that your trailer with LED lights does not trigger any warnings or hyperflashing when hooked up to your vehicle's 7-way, blade-style connector.

Features:

  • Bypasses your vehicle's lamp-out sensor so that you can tow a trailer with LED lights
    • Prevents your vehicle's computer from sensing that a trailer light is burned out, which is how it would normally read the LED lights on the trailer
  • Designed for use with vehicles with Lamp-Out sensors - such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Porsche
  • Plugs into the 7-way, RV-style trailer connector on your vehicle
  • Provides a new 7-way, RV-style trailer connector that works with trailers that have LED lights

If you have a vehicle with a factory tow package that has a lamp-out sensor and you tow a trailer that has LED lights on it, then you've likely experienced hyperflashing and/or false computer errors. Because LEDs pull such a small amount of power, certain sensors are unable to detect them. The result is a warning in your vehicle that continuously tells you that the trailer lights are not functioning. In addition, the lights on your trailer may not illuminate properly because of your vehicle's inability to recognize LED lights. This can lead to either hyperflashing lights on the trailer or lights that will not illuminate at all.

This adapter has a built-in bypass system that is designed to eliminate these problems. Just plug the adapter into your vehicle's 7-way, RV-style trailer connector and you're good to go. Plug the wiring connector from your LED-lit trailer into the adapter's 7-way, blade-style receptacle and the trailer's lights will illuminate as they're supposed to, without triggering errors in your car's computer.

I have a 2015 VW Touareg TDI with the factory towing package. No one in my area (Boise) knew how to install a trailer brake on it. So, I ordered a Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless brake controller and the lamp out sensor bypass plug. I installed them today and they work great withy Touareg! I would recommend this product to anyone with a German made SUV. Very hassle free and best brake controller I've ever used ! 203259

Product works, but flip top design is flawed and easily pops out of its spring position, preventing the top from locking in the trailer connector. This presents the poor situation that the trailer connector will vibrate out and you would lose trailer lights/brakes going down the road. Simple design fix would be a better placed and stronger spring for the top. Only solution with the current design is to push the spring back behind the swivel point to create adequate pressure or tie wrap it in place. Constant worry issue for this single weak point on the otherwise well made item. 95490

Bought this to use on a 2017 Ford F350 that was having trouble with trailer turn signal fault and trailer disconnected message would also come up on the dash. Finally figured out it was the LED lights on the trailer that were causing trouble with the trailer system on the truck. This adapter works great for that , even though it doesn't list it as working with a Ford. Very good product and very good service! 408923

Thanks for the Review Mike. I did reach out to my friends at Tow-Ready and confirmed that this item is not exclusively for the European vehicles, and will work with any vehicle that has a trailer lamp out detection monitoring system. The European models were leading the way with those electrical systems. Also if you happen to need a 7 to 4-way adapter the # TR20141
7-Way to 5-Way/4-Way Trailer Adapter for Vehicles with Lamp-Out Sensors Towing Trailers with LEDs

functions the same way. It just provides a 4-way for the trailer connector.

This product is a lifesaver! I have a 2014 Range Rover and I just purchased a new trailer and for the life of me, the dealership, and the trailer manufacturer, we could not figure out why the electrical on the trailer would not work when plugged into the car. The trailer manufacturer confirmed the lights worked on the trailer, the dealership confirmed electric was going to the 7 pin connector on the hitch but for some reason the lights/brakes/etc would not work on the trailer. After doing some research on forums online, I was able to find out that the newer high end cars do not recognize the low power draw of LED lights on the newer trailers. This attachment is simple to use and created enough resistance for the vehicle to recognize the connection and is just a simple plug and play. Could not be happier. 462560

Solid, Well-Made, Does Exactly What It Should. HyperFlashing is Not Cool!!! I've been trying to track down a part which solves this problem for a while. I started using an LED-equipped trailer and the hyperflashing & computer warning messages are annoying! I almost settled for 20141, but glad I waited. Also, most retailers aren't receiving this part for another month or more. eTrailer shipped the same day as my order. NOTE: This works well with Range Rover also. Not related to the product: This was my first eTrailer order and I was VERY impressed. I spoke with two ladies regarding this part and eTrailer's customer service is TOP NOTCH. I will definitely order again in the future! THANKS! 83706

what year range rover does this work with. I just tried it on my 2008 LR3 and I still have the problem?

-- comment by: Art M - 07/18/2013

It should work independent of year. Check your trailer connector and make sure the connections inside have not corroded for starters. Also check all the grounds of the trailer wiring and if applicable on the vehicle trailer connector. Ground issues cause most of the electrical gremlins in the trailer world. On 7-Way systems, corrosion inside the connector is another likely culprit.

I am an amateur Porsche Race Car Driver and have a trailer that I pull my race car on. I pull my race car with a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. I could never get the lights to work properly and hated to rewire as I use an american truck sometimes. Before installing the adapter, the lights would just blink and had no brake lights or signal lights.. The adapter I bought is a great solution for European cars and/or trucks. I purchased the Trailer Connector Adapter w/ Lamp-Out Sensor Bypass - 7-Way RV to 7-Way RV - Vehicle End and it works perfectly. The blinkers works. The brake lights work. I can't believe such an inexpensive solution solved my problem. Contact e-trailer before you think of rewiring any trailer. 481773

It’s still working well. We put it on when we use our hitch-mounted bike rack too, as it shuts off our backup warning sensor instead of having it constantly beeping.

The product does not work on Mercedes Benz vehicles that have led lights. It was suppose to resolve my voltage difference between the led lights (8-9 volts) and the rear view camera that requires 12 volts. That never happened. This adapter saved our sanity! Our 2019 F350 kept giving us the ‘trailer disconnected’ warning constantly while pulling our fifth wheel. We researched the problem online and realized that our truck wasn’t sensing the led lights due to their low voltage. Took the truck to the dealer who assured me they could fix it however the first time we took it out and I adjusted the trailer brakes I started getting the message again . So tried finding an adapter to bypass the bulb out sensor on the truck. I found this via a google search . Plugged this in, and no issues since!! It is awesome and such a good price! I would recommend this to anyone who is towing a trailer with led lights with a Ford truck. 715944

Perfect solution for the problem of using LED light bar on towed vehicle behind Sprinter chassis RV. This adapter plugs into the 7 pin of RV, light bar remote transmitter plugs into adapter. The built-in load resistors activate the Sprinter tow module and allow the function of light bar to work correctly with no modification to wiring. Great solution. 691368

Great so far -- bought this to connect a Mercedes ML350 suv to a Flagstaff travel trailer. As is mentioned many times in different trailering forums, some European vehicles have an issue with false sensor readings when connected to a trailer with LEDs. I had the same exact issue and this adapter seems to have fixed the problem perfectly. Time will tell as we go on our first big road trip with the travel trailer next week. But for now, looks like a winner. 657742

This device resolved our Prodigy RF brake controller communications issue and saved us a trip to an RV dealer and/or countless hours of aggravation. Our Cayenne diesel is a fantastic tow vehicle, however, the "smart" electronics of German vehicles can be troublesome for towing configurations such as ours. This device may reduce the clearance of trailer wiring to the ground - depends on your wiring receptacle orientation and height. We also chose to add an additional strap wrapped around the adapter cover to ensure the trailer wiring did not unexpectedly disconnect itself. Thanks etrailer for your assistance and guidance towards this product to resolve our issue and get us safely on the road again. 646863

Great product solved LED trailer light problem 2008 Mercedes ML 584243

- 20142

This adapter worked as described. It allows me to have a LED brake light connected to the trailer receiver on the back of my Sprinter. It took me a while to comprehend why I was having so much difficulty connecting up a simple LED light to the Sprinter 7 pin receiver. It would flash every two seconds with the power to the Sprinter off and not light up on pressing the brake pedal. The issue is that German machines have 'smarts' related to the 7 pin receiver such that the driver is warned if an old style bulb on the trailer is not working. Until you know this fact it will 'drive you crazy'. This device provide 'electrical loads' so the Sprinter thinks there is a trailer with bulbs connected. 582812

Works great. Wish I found out sooner that I needed one of these and spent some time trying to figure out why the LEDs tail lights on a new camper would not work correctly with a 2008 Mercedes ML350. My tow vehicle is a Mercedes 2006 ML500 that had issues connecting with the improved LED lighting on my Airstream trailer. I had a choice of a $800 wiring upgrade or this; I tried this and couldn't be happier. Highly recommend to solve the problem - works well, sits in glove box, has held up to frequent use. Only comment - you have to be more firm when you insert It into the receptor - not a big deal, but a thought if you're having problems connecting. After two and a half hours of checking car and trailer wiring I finally went on the internet to get some answers. If you have a late model euro vehicle, and a trailer with LED lights, this 20142 solves the problems you may be having. It has something to do with your vehicle wanting to complete a circuit but, the LEDs draw such little current it sends your euro vehicle into a tail spin and you get some weird faults. This product solved the problem for me and may for you. 209948

  • Your vehicle is equipped with a Lamp-Out sensor. Because the LED lamps on your trailer draw only a fraction of the power that comparable incandescent lamps would, the vehicle lamp-out sensor thinks there's a burned out bulb which causes the hyperflash or fast blink you described. Using a # 20142 Trailer Connector Adapter will bypass that sensor and your turn signals on the vehicle and trailer will work correctly. If you click the provided link, you can see a product description video featuring...

  • Can Lamp-Out Sensor Trailer Connector Adapter be Used on a Ford F-150 Towing a Trailer with LEDs
  • We've had customers use the lamp-out sensor trailer adapter, part # 20142, with Fords and it's worked great for them. The page mentions Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Porsche but those are just examples of vehicles that are known for having the lamp-out sensors. The # 20142 isn't actually vehicle specific and will work on your F-150.

  • 7-Way to 4-Way Trailer Connector Adapter to Power LED Trailer Lights with 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG
  • Adapters like the Tow Ready # 20142 are for a 7-way trailer connector on a vehicle to connect to a 7-way on a trailer. If your 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS AMG has a 7-way connector and your trailer has a 4-way you can use the # TR20141 which has load resistors to work with the LED lights on your trailer. The alternative is to install load resistors like # P230004A-2.

  • Solution for Range Rover When 7-Way Adapter for German Cars 20142 Does not Work
  • We have heard before that for some Range Rover owners the part # 20142 did not work like it should. In those situations we have to recommend installing load resistors on the trailer lighting circuits so that the correct load is seen for the vehicle. For that we have the part # P230004A-2 which includes a pair of resistors.

  • 2017 Ford F-450 Not Recognizing Trailer with LED Lights
  • Yes, the best option we have for you is to use the Trailer Connector Adapter w/ Lamp-Out Sensor Bypass part # 20142 which is for vehicles that have trouble using trailers with LED lights due to the minimal amp draw they have. I cannot guarantee this will fix your problem as we have not tested it yet but it is designed to fix pretty much the same issue on similar vehicles so I do not see why it would not work for you as well. If not, it can always be returned for a refund.

  • What 7-Way Harness Fits a 2001 Toyota 4Runner With a Factory 4-Flat Tow Package Connector
  • In order to convert your 4-way to a 7-way on your 2001 Toyota 4Runner that has a tow package, you will need the Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7. Installation time can range up to 3 hours. You were informed correctly, the black wire in the kit will need to be run to the battery. I have attached a short installation video with this kit on a 2011 Toyota Highlander. Although the vehicle is different, the installation will be similar.

  • Trailer Connector Adapter w/ Lamp-Out Sensor Bypass Not Working on 2013 Porsche Cayenne
  • If your Cayenne was designed for the US market and you are still getting the errors when using the adapter # 20142 then you likely need more power draw beyond the resistors in the adapter. You can achieve this by installing load resistors such as # P230004C-2 for a 2 pack. Wire one in line on the trailer side wiring on any affected circuits to create more draw so the vehicle thinks the LED lights are regular incandescent lights. If your 2013 Porsche Cayenne has a European configured...

  • Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wont Pair Troubleshooting with Mercedes
  • The issue you are having is not uncommon for German vehicles. There are a few things you can try to get the unit to pair. First, If you do not see displayed what the instructions say just keep going through the steps. Sometimes, it will not display what it is supposed to but it will still work if you go through the steps to completion. If that does not work then you can try taping off the pin in the 5 oclock position at the back of the RF (where the trailer plugs into) using electrical...

  • Does a 2018 Chev Silverado 2500HD Have Lamp Out Sensors
  • The 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500 models do have the lamp out sensors as do more and more American made vehicles as they get more computerized. Whether your specific trailer will trigger the sensor or not is unknown as they do vary. If you find you have an issue, then I recommend the Trailer Connector Adapter w/ Lamp-Out Sensor Bypass - 7-Way RV to 7-Way RV - Vehicle End # 20142 which has load resistors to allow the trailer to function well without the vehicle having that lamp out error.

  • Trailer Observation Camera Will Not Pair/Stay On While Using 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • The issue as I am sure you are aware of is that the trailer lighting circuits on a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 do not send enough voltage to the running light circuit to power the observation system camera. As of September 2019, neither Furrion or Voyager have came out with a fix for this but I do know Furrion said they would have an adapter which should work with the Voyager system as well in late October 2019. In the meantime, the Trailer Connector Adapter w/ Lamp-Out Sensor part #...

  • Towing a Trailer with 7-Way RV Style Connector with a Semi-Truck with a Semi Style 7-Way
  • The 7-Way on a semi-truck is not the same as an RV style 7-Way and there isn't an adapter. What I recommend, instead of replacing the connector on the trailer, is to add the correct mating 7-Way on the truck. To do that you can hardwire in a 7-Way, # HM47210. For this 7-Way the white wire is ground, yellow is left turn signal and brake lights, green is right turn signal and brake lights, brown is the tail light wire, red is auxiliary power, blue is output to electric brakes, and purple...

What happens for most people is they stop and start over or try to figure out what went wrong. There is also an issue on German made vehicles with the factory 7-Way and bulb out sensors. It does not sound...

  • In regards to the Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # 90250, the remote should indeed read "n.c" after you have set the power knob to greater than minimum. If you reconnect the trailer and the remote then shows ".c." that is a good sign the device is paired properly but in order to check you just need to apply the manual override and see if you get a readout. I will say that pairing can be difficult on certain vehicles, especially German vehicles like your...
