How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Bulldog Round Jack

Today, well be reviewing part number BD150000. This is the Bulldog Round Jack with no mount. Has a top-wind handle. Its going to provide 10 of lift and trade at 2,000 lbs. This dependable jack is recognized as industry standard for agricultural and commercial applications. Its also ASABE compliant. It does have precision-fitted parts that are going to help provide exceptional stability and reliability, and the tip-wind handle has a smooth, ergonomic design for easy cranking.

The grip here is a nice, claw grip which is going to allow us to securely grab onto the handle. The outer tube has a nice, gray paint finish and the inner tube is a zinc-plated finish so its going to stand up nicely against rust and corrosion.A couple accessories that are sold separately that may be helpful: the first one is a caster wheel. This would mount to the bottom of your jack. You can see that it attaches with a hole and a pin and clip, so its going to look like that. The only thing that you would need to do is stick your jack into the caster and mark two pilot holes to drill a hole through. That way you can secure it with the pin.

This is available and sold separately with part number BDCP555.Also available and sold separately is a foot plate. This can be found on our website with part number BD018564. It installs the same way as the caster wheel. Once we have our jack in there, we can just mark pilot holes, drill the appropriate size hole, which the pin is in diameter, so it just needs to be a little bit larger than that, and then you can secure it with your pin. When the jack is fully retracted, were going to have a height from the bottom of the inner tube to the top of our jack of 15. When its fully extended, that measurement is going to increase to 25.

If we subtract those two measurements were left with 10, and thats where we get our lift measurement from. Our outer tube has a diameter of 2 and our inner tube has a diameter of right at 2. This jack does come with a lift capacity of 2,000 lbs. and when the handles not in use, you can flip it over to a stowed position.Thats going to complete todays review of part number BD150000. Thats the Bulldog Round Jack, rated at 2,000 lbs. .

These jacks work awesome for the aluminum snowmobile lifts that I build and the shipping was free and very fast!! I’m very very happy with etrailer!!

by:

Just what I needed to replace an older 1000lbs Bulldog jack on my snowmobile lift. I can now use a drill to raise/lower the lift without using the crank handle.

by:

i have a side mount jack welded to my boat trailer . as i did not want to weld on the trailer , i got this jack that has more lift and capacity than my old jack , removed the swivel part off the trailer , cut out the old tube , and welded on the new jack tube , this also let me set the down position where i wanted id . jack is ridged and cranks smoothly

by:

Great product, fast shipping sadly only 3 of the 4 items arrived due to shipping box failure….I’ll be calling customer service on Monday to get a replacement on the way asap…. Excellent Bulldog products and super customer service after a shipping glitch

by:

I have used this product previously though it was supplied by a different vendor who had terrible reviews and is now out of business. I am a snowmobile nut and use this product to build snowmobile lifts for myself and friends. etrailer.com supplied this same jack for a better total price than I got 2 years ago from the other company and the etrailer folks were super to work with. One call and everything was set up and they kept me informed my order status all the way through til delivery. Great customer service and will do business with these guys in the future.

This is the 2nd Bulldog Jack I've purchased and I have no complaints at all.

  • Replacement Swivel Jack with Pipe Mount for Snow Plow
The Pro Series Round, Pipe-Mount Swivel Jack w/ Footplate - Sidewind - 10" Lift - 5,000 lbs # PS1401420303 has a 10-1/2 inch dimension from the center of the mount but is only 6-1/2 inches from the center of the mount to the top of the unit. This is the shortest length from base to mount. If you need clearance when not in use, I recommend inverting the jack. If you need that measurement for function, then I recommend resting your plow on something to allow the jack to swing into place...

  • Recommended Top Wind A-Frame Trailer Jack
The mounting bracket we sell for the Bulldog Round Jack, part # BD150000, you mentioned is not the weld on style triangular bracket you asked about. It is the Mount Tube for Bulldog Round Jack, part # BDPG9810-00. This attaches to the outer tube of the jack and has a round mount with a pin to secure it into place. I may have another option for you. I recommend the Pro Series Round A-Frame Jack, part # PS1400600303. This jack has a 5,000 lb lift capacity and has the triangular plate already...

  • Castor Wheel and Footplate for a Bulldog 2,000 Pound Capacity Round Trailer Jack
For a footplate, you can use Bulldog Detachable Footplate, # BD018564. This foot fits 2 inch diameter tubing on Bulldog 2,000 to 5,000 pound jacks. For a wheel, use Replacement, 6 Inch Caster, # BD500245. This wheel also fits on 2 inch diameter tubing. Because the capacity of the wheel is 1,200 pounds, it limits the jack capacity to 1,200 pounds as well.
