Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The order was processed quickly and arrived in less than a week. I appreciate the quality of information available on the web site that made matching my existing worn out tires/wheels to these new ones. I will definitely consider etrailer for my future purchases. Great job - Well Done!

Tires are performing great. Made several camping trips with my trailer and no problems were noted. Thanks Again!

Well..... It Looks Good To me... I Will Keep it As a spare.. Haven't used it as of now, As long as it fits which it should i am Good To Go

Boat and trailer I bought had 14" tires on it and made loading and unloading the trailer a big pain, so after doing some research I decided to go with these tires. It brought the trailer down 5" lower than before. trailer works better now, and tires do their job.

Yes, no problems with all the items I got from you. Everything worked as expected.

I received my tires and rims yesterday, I must say the shipping was fast, the Product is very good for the price.
Although I haven't taken on the road yet, I feel confident that these tires will get the job done.
I will write another review again on tread wear, and trailer handling.
Thank you for your professionalism.

Ran on these tires last year fishing the mountain areas, getting ready to take the boat back up trout fishing next week. So far, tread wear is excellent, handles well. Great tires and rims. Thanks again!

The product was exactly what I wanted and was delivered very expeditiously. I installed it on my camper and am now going to buy a cover for it from etrailer.
I will buy two more of these when I need to replace the current road tires on my
pop-up camper.

We had those tires
Bob B - 11/02/2017

I recently purchased 2 Kenda 5.70x8 trailer tire with wheel packages. I am reviving a pop-up camper for a friend, and the old tires were flat and dry rotted. The new tires arrived in a very reasonable time, and the finish on the wheels was well protected with cardboard. The quality was good and they fit perfectly. I was initially looking in local marine and trailer stores, and either they had to be ordered or the price was high. I remembered previous orders I placed with etrailer and decided to check. I found what I needed, and the price and service was better at etrailer. For my next order I won't bother to go anywhere else.

It shipped and I received it a day before I expected! I unboxed the product, took off my dry rotted tires and rims, checked my hubs and bearings and put my new tires and rims on. THEY FIT PERFECT. Have not trailered my boat yet. But when I do I feel confident that these tires and wheels will perform as smoothly as this transaction. Thank you E-Trailer for doing the things the way they are suppose to be done. Ken B.

I had them for a year so far and no issues. Still look like new. I've used them on two long road trips with a large utility ATV on my small trailer.

These were an easy solution for me because all you have to do is bolt the rim on vs buying just the tire and having to wrestle it on he rim.

It was time to stop taking my boat trailer for granted. Thanks etrailer for great selection, amazing prices, and FAST delivery. Thanks to you (and a little elbow grease) I will have many mo safe seasons!

Tires and wheels were everything I expected. What I didn't expect was the excellent communications from the folks here at etrailer. Notifications as to order received and when they shipped and the tracking info. WOW great company

I purchased a set of these tires on rims and they came lightning fast and were top quality as expected! Order other items from etrailer, and have no complaints, all quality at great prices!

Excellent product, but more importantly, the knowledgeable staff at recommended the appropriate tire for my vehicle! Thank you!

Great service from! I bought this tire as a spare, and it looks like a perfect match to the others on my trailer. Just as expected!!

the tires on my trailer were old , cracked and possibly unsafe. These new tires are great. I an heading out to test them in the next few hours (they are on a boat trailer).

Great price. I kind of wish I had ordered the load range C for a few dollars more, but I bet these will be fine. I'll be taking them on a 1,000 mile drive soon, we'll see!

Great price. Great

I ordered the wrong item. Called and spoke to Ashley. She corrected my mistake, and assisted me ensuring I ordered the correct tire/rim combo.
Received my order set promptly. Absolutely wonderful experience! Thanks Ashley [Thumbs up]

Fast Shipping. Good Prices!

All the parts I ordered were as expected, I am now setup for safely putting some miles on my camper

Tire seems to be exactly what I wanted for my trailer.

You had what I needed at a good price. Called to let me know that the tires might be back-ordered and talked about options. Lucky the tires came into stock and were sent out. Thanks.

Good value, burden carrier doing great work and looking good!

  • Is Trailer Wheel and Tire # AM30100 Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry like # AM30100 are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

  • What Does The Letter R Mean On Tires
The letter R means that the tire has a radial construction. The tire/wheel combo you referenced, part # AM30100 is an 8 inch bias-ply tire with a load range B on a steel wheel that has a 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern. The maximum load on this tire is 715 lbs at 50 psi. I have attached some helpful articles that explain wheel and tire sizing and what each of the letters and numbers mean you can check out.

  • Wheel and Tire # AM30100 Recommendation for a 1989 Karavan Trailer
The Wheel and Tire part # AM30100 that you referenced has the same tire size and wheel bolt pattern as what you currently have so it should work well as an exact replacement. It has the capacity of 715 lbs at 50 psi. The thing about trailer tires is that they only have their max capacity when they are inflated to their max psi. So you would have to keep this tire inflated to 50 psi. The capacity for a trailer tire is meant as the capacity for just the single wheel/tire. If your trailer...

We do offer pre-mounted combination wheel/tire products and also tires only in the 5.70-8 size you referenced. These tires will use psi pressures of either 50-, 75- or 100-psi in order to reach their maximum rated weight capacities and will fit on a wheel that measures 8 x 3-3/4-inches. • Does the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10010 Have a Natural Tire Shape
You are correct that the shape of the Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire # AM10010 isn't reflected 100% accurately in the video (attached) due to it not being mounted and properly inflated. Tires themselves cannot have an offset because it would change the entire way that the tire is constructed. The only time you will see an offset is with the wheel it is mounted on. If you check out the video for the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30100 you can see that when the tire...

  • Can Larger Tires and Wheels be Used on a Trailer with 5.70-8 Tires
Different wheels can have different offsets but usually the offset is zero. The 5.70-8 is a little wider than a 5.30-12 so either the wheels did have an offset or the tires were rubbing on something else (like a fender) considering they are almost 4 inches taller than the original tires you had. If you go to a 12 inch then a 4.80-12 is more narrow and they fit the same wheels as a 5.30-12. So you could keep the wheels (if they don't have an offset) and just have 4.80-12 tires mounted by...

Yes, you can upgrade from a 5.70-8 tire and wheel like # AM30100 to a 10 inch tire and wheel so long as you have the needed clearance. With trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. A 5.70-8 tire measures 5.8" wide and 18.1" in diameter, and a 10 inch tire - a 205/65-10 - measures 8.3" wide and 20.8" in diameter. So if...

When you say blowouts and attribute them to heat buildup, you are correct. The reason you have heat buildup in tires is not just because of the size, it will also be from overloading, damage to the tires and age. So to just change size first might not solve the problem. If the tires hit curbs a lot it would cause damage to the sidewalls and form a weak spot, which would allow the heat to buildup and go to the weakest spot in the tire and fail. Also any punctures or repairs to the tires...
