Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2005 Honda Element

Today in our 2005 Honda Element. We'll be installing the draw-tite hitch, part number 75659. Here's what our hitch looks like installed on a vehicle. Now, we'll go ahead and give you a couple of measurements in helping you choose some accessories for your hitch such as a ball mount, bicycle rack or cargo carrier. From the center the hitch and hole to the edge of the bumper is approximately three inches and from the top of the opening on the hitch to the ground is approximately thirteen and a half inches. Now let's go ahead and install our hitch.

To begin with, we will go ahead and point out the mounting locations on the vehicle. You will notice that there are two on each the driver and the passenger side. As well as we will be using the tow hook at the center of the vehicle on the rear. Here we will show you how a half inch bolt with a half inch washer install the tube spacer through the inside hole on the frame. A three quarter inch flat wash will go and then on the inside of the hitch, a half inch conical toothed washer followed by a half inch nut.

The same process will be repeated for all four locations. Now for the center section or the tie down hook. We use a U bolt which is a 3 inch U bolt and 3 inch flange hex lock nuts. Now let's go ahead and install our hardware in to the vehicles frame. You need to repeat this process for all four locations.

Now go ahead and get someone to help you raise the hitch into place. While doing this, you need to slide the three quarter inch washer over the bolt as you push it back through the frame and through the hitch. Remember the three quarter inch flat wash needs to go between frame and the trailer hitch. Once you have all four of the bolts pushed in. Go ahead and put the half inch conical toothed washer follower by the half inch hex nut on each.

Do not tighten it down all the way this time. Once you have all four of these done. We will move over to the U bolt. You'll slide the U bolt to through the tow hook and then through the two holes on the hitch then you will install the two three ace flange hex nuts. Now you have all the hardware installed, we need to start with tightening down the U bolt first. As you tighten it down, you need to make sure that you keep it centered on the bracket and evenly tighten them. So, go ahead and tighten one side of the U bolt down followed by a level on the other side work back and forth until you have it snugged. Once you have it snugged down, go ahead torque it to the manufacturer's specification. With that done we will move back over to the half inch bolts and nuts. Let's go ahead and tighten them all down. We'll go ahead and torque those down to the manufacturer's specification as well. Now we are complete the installation of our draw-tite hitch, part number 75659 on our 2005 Honda Element. .

Perfect hitch for my 2008 Honda Element SC I wrote a better review of the entire process under this item (T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector Item # 118465) I forgot to save it to copy to here and it was rather long,,,, hope you find it in there,,,, it was awesome! 627817

Accurate descriptions of product and prompt shipment. Drawtite is a reputable company for towing equipment, so I don't expect any problems with the hitch. Product information and reviews provide plenty of info to quickly install. I taped the washers to the frame as suggested by others. The spacers and bolt ends are positioned flush with the inside washers and actually support them, while the tape helps to prevent knocking the washers off as you move the hitch into position. 599041

Product delivered ahead of schedule. Installed in my garage in a hoodie with safety goggles on my back. Takes half hour with no power tools. I am going to say I dig the outdoors and eventually will get a trailer, but until then I wanted to get in the groove of pushing myself to save and do it. I am going to promote myself here too, visit my tattoo shop in Olympia Washington, for custom work from a semi-retired tattoo artist. Great product and service. Thank you. 588309

Great product, great service. The hitch for my Honda Element came very quickly- less than four days. Directions for mounting the hitch were clear and it was relatively easy to attach it; attaching it is best achieved with two people; it could be done with one, but it would be quite awkward. The hitch is on my car, looks great, ('cause you can hardly see it when the ball isn't on), and is already in use. I went with the 3,000 lb. rated hitch even though my Element is only rated to tow up to 1,500 lb.- just seemed prudent. 44213

Fast delivery, no missing parts, very sturdy hitch. I repainted it to match my 2005 Element rear bumper. Used Rustoleum hammertone light gray. I followed a suggestion that one of the commenters had about taping the large fender washers in place to avoid trying to shove them up into place while jostling with the hitch. This trick makes this a one person operation. Also I installed the forward bolts first then swung the hitch up to set in the rear two bolts. Worked like a charm. Had no problem installing the “U” bolt, as some people mentioned. Note in the photo there is my aluminum angle that is bolted the steel tab on the left side of the receiver. Eventually I will drill a 3/4” hole in it for a quick disconnect round four wire plug. 570783

Hitch was an easy install. Worked as designed. After vehicle was totaled in accident, I ordered another from etrailer for the new vehicle. 2nd one fit perfectly and will put to the test next week. 573264

The hitch arrived fast and safe. I installed it this morning in less than an hour. It fit very well into place. The only trouble was the u bolt didn't quite line up with the holes on the hitch. I was able to spread it with a screw driver and it dropped into place through the holes enough to place the nuts on the treads and tighten them. Other than that, it was an easy install with just some ordinary hand tools. We used some duct tape to hold the spacer washers in place like some others advised which worked out great. Highly recommended product. 276955

2010 Honda Element

My thanks to the previous customers for photos and videos. It helped. Also, E-Trailer BOM was complete with no missing items, and included basic instructions. Hitch arrived within a few days. Ordinarily I have had hitches installed for me in the past. But this Honda Element hitch (have 2010 Element) did not require drilling and the pictures and videos from previous customers made the installation appear pretty simple. Note the sleeve/spacer will only slide on the bolt from the inner side of the frame so cannot pre-assemble on the bolt. Almost dropped sleeve inside frame while blindly attempting to slide onto second bolt, missing the bolt as inserted sleeve into hole. Hardest part for me was getting hitch into place to get initial U-bolt connected in center, before doing frame bolts as was suggested by one customer. It was just a matter of my lesser body strength and not complexity. I installed the hitch in slightly over one hour working alone. Did not install wiring harness yet, as my primary reason for the hitch is using it with a motorcycle carrier. Might just be an adjustment of the hitch mounting bolts, but I noticed that the hitch is slightly distorting the plastic bumper cover where the hitch is hitting it on the bottom center at the hitch neck. Not enough to be too worried about and do not want to cut the bumper plastic. 163536

I am happy to report a good experience from etrailer. I ordered DrawTite hitch 75659 for a 08 Honda Element SC, also wiring. I chose this hitch becaused of the way it mounted no drilling or enlarging holes, seemed like the best design for the Element. The orrder was shipped quickly to Okla. I had no trouble with installating of either hitch or wiring. Note, the u clamp was slightly narrow to line up with the holes in the hitch. I spread slightly before installing. I did have to trim bumper plastic which I was hesitant at first, I was careful and it now looks better than being pushed up. Thanks to Molly for good service and tracking info. 470567

As others have commented, the product descriptions and installation instructions provided by etrailer.com were excellent. Order Class III - 2" for a 2008 Honda Element SC. The hitch was promptly delivered in three days. As guided by your site, and a very prompt follow-up to my email questions by customer service representative Leah S., I was able to develop an plan to trim the bumper/fascia prior to installation. Used a "31 tooth per inch" jig saw blade to trim the required cut out. See trim planning pic and installation pic. Thanks for all your assistance...and great product. Installation was a breeze (after watch several of the you-tube instructional videos)! 191995

My experience with e-trailer was one of those times when you think this is going too easy and there has to be a catch. There wasn't. Living in Alaska it's sometimes hard to get parts. After checking with local suppliers I found the receiver I needed for my Honda Element had to be ordered and would take two weeks. We needed it in a week. I was able to find the exact part I needed on e-trailer at a very competitive price and it arrived in 3 days. The representative I talked with was great. He doubled checked that the receiver I was ordering was the right one, checked availability and reassured me it would go out the next morning. When it arrived we had it installed in less than hour. Crisis averted with out a hitch. No pun intended. 267159

This hitch didn't fit my Honda Element as well as the Class I hitch it replaced (same brand); it was about 1/4" too narrow. A trip to the local hardware store for some more washers solved the problem however. The instructions and illustrations are very good, I probably spent a couple of hours getting everything to fit just right, but now I have a much stronger hitch and I'm ready to tow my camping trailer. 83847

Unfortunately I was in a bad accident and totaled my Honda Element?. I replaced it with a 2014 Honda CRV and put a Hidden Hitch in it about 6 months ago. It was a trickier installation than the Element, but the hitch fit very well and is stronger than the OEM hitch, so we have another winner!-Les-

I installed the trailer hitch receiver in less than an hour without assistance on a 2005 Honda Element. I did watch the etrailer video on the installation before I ordered this. The written instructions were clear and easy to follow. The only tricky part of the installation was keeping the 3/4" flat washers in place. I used a thin screwdriver and a thin metal shim to make sure they were over the tube spacer. The final installation looks great. I really liked not having to drill holes. I hate being on my back and having the metal shavings falling on my face... I will be using this for a bike rack. I doubt that I will ever pull a trailer with it. 546888

Ordering was easy, instructions were available online so I could see what I was getting into. Price was good, shipping was free. Package was delivered quicker than expected and contents arrived in perfect condition. Install instructions (also provided with the package) were spot-on and a cinch to do (installed just the hitch-no wiring). Total install time from start to finish including putting my tools away was 40 minutes. Would highly recommend etrailer, and would shop here again. As for the hitch, for the Element you basically have two choices. Class 1 with 1 1/4" receiver or Class 3 with a 2" receiver. The 2" receiver is more versatile. You can get adapters for 1 1/4" items, but you can't make a 2" fit in 1 1/4", so I recommend the Class 3. Class 1 also required drilling - no thanks. The Class 3 hitch is worth the extra money. Installs to the frame and all parts needed are provided. Just remember, the Element is not rated for Class 3 towing. Keep it to 1500 lbs and no more that 150 lb tongue weight. My understanding is that you do have to cut the bumper cosmetic trim to get the hitch to fit for Element SC models. Mine's an older EX, so no cutting. 16741

2010 Honda Element

The hitch for my 2010 Honda Element arrived very quickly and in good condition. The shipping box was solid, but the hitch was basically loose inside the box. Installation was easy. I recommend that you use masking tape to hold the large fender washers to the outside of the mounting plates - it makes it simple to get everything lined up. Be careful not to drop the tubular spacers into the frame rails - it would be tough to get them back out again. Put the bolts through the frame first, then put the spacers on the bolts. (Remove in the opposite order, or you risk dropping the spacer into the frame rail.) I installed the forward set of bolts loosely, allowing me to pivot the hitch up into position and mark the bumper cover for trimming (I have an SC model - no trimming is required for the EX or LX models). One thing that would be handy would be a paper trimming template for the SC bumper cover - it would be a simple addition to the instruction sheet. Put masking tape on the bumper to protect it and give you a place to mark out the cuts. The bumper material cuts easily with a coping saw or power spiral saw; cut undersized and then file or sand the opening to size and for clean appearance. The hitch lined up perfectly with all the mounting points on the frame, and it is a good, solid hitch. The hardware was all of very good quality, packaged nicely. The bracket to the left of the receiver does tend to get in the way of hitch-pin locks, but nothing I couldn't work around. Overall the service from etrailer.com was excellent! 8425

2015 Honda Element

I have to say etrailer hooked it up. Ordered my hitch on a Tuesday and got it the next day, got to give them a high five on that. I have a 2011 Honda Element EX, needed a hitch for my bike rack. I was looking for a hitch that would fit without any issues. Picked the Draw-Tite because it had a great review and the people on the Honda Element Forums suggested it. After I got the hitch it took about 15 min to install, actually it took longer to torque the bolts down than the actual install. As you can see from the photo their is a little bit of bumper bend but nothing that you would notice unless you looked really close. Thanks again etrailer it was great doing business with you. 16549

Thanks TJ!Its really helpful your comment and pics, especially the one with the bend. Im just wondering if DrawTite fixed this a bit of bend issue with the latest product or, its really small bend to notice, as you mentioned above. It would be nice if you can post a pic from the back, just like the other once, but without the bike carrier. I just want to see how it looks without the carrier from the back.Anyway, thanks for your review! It really helps us to decide to go with this hitch.Cheers,

Installation was easy. I recommend using masking tape to hold the 3/4 washer in place. An extra set of hands is important for bringing the hitch into place. I recommend a torque wrench because the 75 ft lbs of torque for the 1/2 in nuts was a lot more than I would have thought. Finally, the hitch compressed the fender so I opted to cut it. I set the hitch, traced it against the fender with a grease pen, removed it, cut out a piece using a jig saw and finally set the hitch again. I'm really pleased with the result I got. It would have more difficult without the right tools and help. 312620

The hitch is incredibly easy and quick to install. I have a 2006 Honda, and the bolt sleeves cannot be inserted from the outside holes but only on the inside. It's not a big deal to install the bolts on the outside and the sleeves on the inside until they meet, but it's just something that was different than the video. Didn't affect the time at all. Great product that instantly makes my honda more versatile. Love how this product is easy, quicker to install and has a higher towing capacity than other models. 614086

  • Hitch with Best Ground Clearance for a 2008 Honda Element EX
  • For your 2008 Honda Element EX I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 75659 because it will provide the best ground clearance out of the available hitch options. The top of the receiver will basically be right below the bottom of the rear fascia on the vehicle. I have linked a video review showing an example installation of this hitch for you. Between the two I recommend the Draw-Tite because the Class III hitch will give you a much larger variety of bike racks to use than the Class I. The 2 inch receiver on this hitch will pretty much sit right up against the bottom of the rear bumper on your Element (see attached image). This Class III hitch will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation and it has a 3,500 pound towing weight capacity and a 350 pound...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver, Wiring, And Ball Mount For 2004 Honda Element AWD
  • For your 2004 Honda Element AWD, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2" # 75659. This will give you a 2 inch receiver opening that is compatible with more accessories as well as greater strength. For your wiring, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118336. This will connect directly into your factory wiring with a plug in connector located in the rear cargo area. For an adjustable ball mount...

  • Does 2 inch Draw Tite Hitch for 2005 Honda Element Have Stopper or Back to Tube
  • What happened to you with the hitch that had the stopper is actually a pretty common occurrence. That stopper is in the hitch tubes of Class I hitches to prevent the use of heavier Class II accessories. Reason being that Class I hitches are lighter duty. The Draw Tite hitch part # 75659 actually has an open back and does not have a stopper so it would work well for you as long as your bike rack is designed for a 2 inch trailer hitch. This would work great with the Yakima HoldUp EVO...

  • Does Trunk Mount Bike Rack Need to be Removed for Hatch Access on a 2011 Honda Element
  • Yes, you will need to remove the Kuat Highline 2 Bike Rack # HIT2B from the trunk of your 2011 Honda Element before opening up the tailgate and upper door. This is the same case for all trunk mount bike racks on any vehicle. If you are wanting to have unrestricted access to the rear hatch area of your Honda Element without removing your bikes or bike rack then you can install a trailer hitch and use a swing-away bike rack. For this application I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75659 which...

  • Tilting Bike Rack that Will Let Tailgate Down on a 2007 Honda Element
  • I do have a recommendation for you but I am not confident that the Curt rack, # C18029, will tilt down far enough to lower the tailgate on your 2007 Honda Element. But take a look at the Kuat Beta bike racks such as # B202-2 for 2 inch hitches or # B202-114 for 1-1/4 inch hitches. This racks tilt down much further so clearance for the tailgate won't be a problem. On your Element the 2 inch Draw-Tite hitch is # 75659. The 1-1/4 inch version is # 24720 (excludes SC models).

  • Hitch Recommendation for 2003 Honda Element
  • None of the hitches we offer would have enough weight capacity for a tongue weight of 450 lbs. Highest we have is the Draw Tite part # 75659 which has tongue weight capacity of 350 lbs. Even still you'd be limited by the capacity of the vehicle which will be 150 lbs like you mentioned. You'd have to look into a small trailer. We've found that people will disregard capacities and warnings to do whatever it is that they want while putting other motorists at risk. Some get away with...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2008 Honda Element SC
  • For your 2008 Honda Element SC I would recommend the Draw-Tite Hitch part # 75659 which is a confirmed fit and has a 2 inch opening which will give you better capacities and more hitch accessory flexibility. For trailer wiring you would then want the part # 118465 which is also a confirmed fit. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts;...

  • Recommended Hitch and Towing Items for 2003 Honda Element Towing Motorcycle Trailer
  • The online edition of the owner's manual for the 2003 Honda Element indicates on page 191 that the maximum trailer weight this car can tow is 1500-lbs. This means your trailer should not weigh more than about 650-lbs; otherwise the total combined weight of Harley and trailer will exceed the vehicle capacity. An aluminum motorcycle trailer should be okay in this respect but check to be certain. Since your Element can be fitted with either a 1-1/4-inch Class I or a 2-inch Class III hitch...

  • Bike Rack Recommendations for 2010 Honda Element
  • To mount a bike rack on the rear of your Element, there are two alternatives, a hitch mounted option or a trunk mounted option. The hitch mounted option would require that a hitch like the Draw-Tite Class III receiver, part # 75659 be installed. The hitch would then serve as the attachment point for the bike rack, and could also be used with a cargo carrier or to tow a small trailer in the future, if the need should arise. Although going this route would be initially more expensive...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Mounted 4 Bike Rack for a 2007 Honda Element
  • Because the bike racks are effectively universal in terms of hitch shape, we don't custom-fit to each vehicle individually. An exception is of course if the vehicle has a rear mount spare tire. Since you don't have one, you don't need to worry about this. The bumper or body elements of a vehicle can sometimes get in the way, and if you're worried about this, you can simply measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge plane of the bumper. I've included a video of our installation...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendations for Towing 4 x 8 Trailer With 2008 Honda Element
  • If there's a possibility you might use the hitch as a mounting point for a hitch accessory like a cargo carrying tray or a bike rack, you might want to consider going with the Class III hitch with the 2 inch receiver opening. The 2 inch receiver size is more common and there are many more accessories available for it. If you decide to go with a 2 inch hitch, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Class III trailer hitch, part # 25659. You'll also need a ball mount, part # 2923 and a 1-7/8 inch ball,...
