Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Nissan Xterra - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2014 Nissan Xterra we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver. This is a custom-fit, Class III receiver hitch with a 2-inch opening. Its part number is 75291. Here's what the hitch is going to look like once you get it installed on your vehicle. It drops down nicely here on either side. It doesn't go all the way across the vehicle like what some do on different models, just overall a really nice, clean look, and it really beefs up the back of the look of the Xterra in my opinion. The hitch extends out.

The hitch pin hole is about flush with the bumper, so just about every single type of Class III or 2-inch bike rack, cargo carrier, you should have full capabilities to use it. Another nice thing is the double pin here. The first one, the inside pin hole, is going to be for our hitch pin's anti-rattle devices, hitch pin locks, things like that. The second one is actually made for use with the J-pin stabilization system, so you could really take advantage of that and incorporate a few of those things into one package. As far as towing goes, this is going to offer us a 350-pound tongue weight rating, a 3500 pound gross trailer rating. Now, if we switch into weight distribution, we're then going to increase our tongue weight rating up to 550 pounds and then the maximum trailer weight up to 5500 pounds.

Now we will want to keep in mind that we need to check the owner's manual on the Xterra, see what its towing capacities are, and we're going to use whichever of those numbers are the lowest. We've got a plate-style safety chain connection point here on each side, so plenty of security there as far as getting everything hooked up. The installation really isn't all that difficult. You're going to remove 2 bolts out of the rear, put the hitch into place, use one of the provided bolts on each side, and then the 2 bolts that you've removed on each side, and it'll be in 20, 30, 40 minutes, 60 minutes if you're taking breaks and enjoying a beverage. That's about all there is to it. Nice clean-looking, heavy-duty hitch. Now a few measurements that'll be helpful in selecting your ball-mount bike rack, or maybe hitch cargo carrier, will be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening.

We have about 20 3/4 of an inch. Nice thing about it also is that from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper it's about flush. Now to begin our installation we need to remove our spare tire. There's going to be a slot right here in the rear. Grab your tire tools out and just lower it down. Let's get it out of the way to give us plenty of room to work.

Now, of course, we'll be reinstalling this once we get our hitch in place. With our spare tire out of the way, this is going to give us plenty of room in here to work. Our next step's going to be to remove the 3 bolts. We've got 1 bolt, 2 bolts, and then there's one that's kind of hidden behind the bracket right here. That'll be our third bolt. By removing this one, this one, and that one, we'll be able to lower our exhaust down. Now, for the one behind this, you may need to use a wrench of some type. It'll be a little hard to get on there with a socket. Inaudible 00:03:25 All right. As you can see, that's just going to give us a little bit of flexibility to be able to get that down and out of the way to get to our access location. Now for our next step we're going to be removing the 2 lower bolts that we see here at the rear. We're going to leave the top one in place, but we're going to remove this one and this one. That's going to provide us with two of our secure locations or two of our bolt-hole locations. Then our third one will be the weld nut that exists right here on both sides. Let's pull the 2 bolts out on this side, then we'll go to the driver's side and do it there as well. You can see we've got our access points on this location as well: here, here, and here. Now, before we raise our hitch into position, we're going to take the 2 washers and we're going to go to our rearmost hole. Let's just put a piece of tape on them to hold them here on the outside, just like that, until we get our hitch into place. Poke a hole there in the middle. That'll allow our bolt to pass through. We'll do one on both sides, and that should really alleviate us having to fight with these to get them in place once the hitch is up there. All right. Now we can lift it up. Now we'll take the bolts provided, as well as one of the conical-tooth washers, and slide that on, and we'll be putting it in our rearmost mounting location right there. We want to guide our hitch over top of the exhaust and make sure both sides are going to tuck in, get one started here on the passenger side, then we can do the one here on the driver's side. Now we'll just let that hold our hitch into position. We're going to grab the bolts that we removed from our 2 rearmost hole locations and we're going to place those in now. Now let's get the two on the passenger side put in and then go through and snug them all down. Now we'll grab our torque wrench and get them torqued down to the specifications that we find in our instructions. Now we'll get our 3 exhaust hanger bolts started . The lower one you're probably going to have to start by hand . and then we'll get them tightened down. Now we'll put the spare back in. With our spare back in place, that's going to complete today's installation of the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 75291, on our 2014 Nissan Xterra. .

hidden hitch The hitch was as described and I installed it on my 08 Nissan Xterra. The only problem was a bent ear on the hitch where the extra bolt that they include was supposed to go. I went ahead and got the bolt started and was able to pull it into place with the bolt itself. I highly reccomend a good set of tools for this job as they bolts from the factory were very tight and all needed to be reinstalled tightly. Overall I am very satified with the hitch and the good price. Took longer then a half hour as was stated for installation. Total time for me about an hour. It would have helped to have someone to assist me with holding it in place until I got the bolts started. 1407

I got this installed today in my 2014 Xterra. It's a well-made product, no doubt, but the installation was a little trickier than some of the videos made it out to be. The challenge I think is that the hitch requires bolt tension to achieve 100% alignment with the existing holes in the frame. So when you first start to insert the bolts, you'll find that the holes in the hitch may be off just a bit from that perfect position where the bolts would slide right in. SO heads-up: what worked for me was to install the two new bolts (left and right) first (make sure you dry-fit the frame nuts for these bolts before the hitch is in place, you need to make sure the bolts fit and do not bind). DO NOT tighten any more that 2-3 threads deep, you will need some play to get the other bolts in. Then, go and install the original four bolts the same way, just 2-3 threads deep. You might have to wiggle the hitch to get all six bolts engaged.. Only when you are sure you have all six bolts in will it be safe to go around and start tightening them. Hope this helps someone. Good product, would buy it again. A heads-up about the tight tolerances would have made my life a little easier. 186128

5 stars for etrailer- the drawtite hitch is a winner too. It was poking out of the box a bit when it arrived (quickly i might add) but it wasn't any worse for wear minus a scratch. The hitch sits nice and tight to the bumper and is a great price at etrailer, the supplied bolts are tough to tighten up, in fact i worried i was going to cross thread one but managed and got them snugged down with an impact. Great videos, great shipping, great customer service - my neighbor came by to see me and i was telling him how great etrailer is while i was installing. Maybe watch the packaging though with the hitch- 713352

2005 Nissan Xterra

nstallation took approx. an hour and a half. Included draw bar install, and harness install under dash, pigtail routing and install, and checking the plug for proper operation. The draw bar fit the vehicle (2005 Xterra), however the holes in the side plates did not all line up. The provided bolts were the wrong pitch. I was able to get the two rearward bolts on either side to go in and thread, the two forward most holes I was only able to get one side in. There was no way the last bolt was going to line up correctly. I tried to use the existing hardware, but those bolts were too short. I ended up only using to four rearward bolts and getting them as tight as I could. It will have to do till I can source the correct hardware for the other bolt holes. And thinking about it I will only be able to do one side as the other side the drilled hole in the draw bar does not line up correctly, and I have no way to modify the hole position. 692236

The difficulties that you are describing sounds like a common issue that our customers do have and we call it a flexed hitch. This is when the bolt holes do not line up with the holes on the vehicle, and the item is still usable, but the hitch does get slightly flexed in shipping. I have included a help article that explains the solutions to remedy this issue.

2012 Nissan Xterra

I've had the trailer hitch on my 2012 Xterra for about a year, and used it on a regular basis to pull motorcycle trailers. It has been absolutely flawless. This may seem like an odd thing to say about a trailer hitch, but I've seen friends who have had all sorts of problems with their hitches, from rattling to broken parts, and difficulty getting customer service from other companies. etrailer has a lot of videos to help you install your gear, if you're doing it yourself, and though I didn't have to call customer service, if they are anything like the ordering and install process support, I'm sure they're great. The videos even included how to put the relay harness in behind the kick panel. The videos are very thorough. In the case of an Xterra, you need to temporarily loosen the rear exhaust clamp so you can fit the hitch in. etrailer videos even include that, rather than just letting you try to figure it out. The only thing I'd suggest, which has nothing to do with the quality of the trailer hitch, is to make sure you clean out the bolt holes for the hitch bolts with a wire brush. I made the mistake of not doing so for the first bolt, and it was a double-wrench situation to get the bolt in. I cleaned out the other holes before putting the bolts in, and it was a piece of cake. Great job, ETrailer team, great product! 517606

Excellent hitch and wire harness. Fit and worked just like the you tube video shows. One small problem; on both sides of the car, the bottom holes on the hitch were not aligned with the holes on the truck. They were off by 1/8” which did not allow for those screws to go in. The screws provided with the hitch and the middle screws on both sides went in correctly. After bolting the two screws on both sides instead of three with the 1/2 impact wrench and torquing them everything was solid and fine. Recommendation: if possible make the holes on the hitch a little larger to allow for adjustments / alignment where all screws can be fastened. 458723

Product did not exactly match up to mounting holes! Very hard time to get it mounted. would NOT recommend this product as attention to detail is lacking in this regard. I am no novice when it comes to working under. I put a Curt trailor hitch on my wife car last fall and had no problems what so ever with the Curt. I should have stuck with Curt. I WILL KNOW WHICH ONE TO BUY IF I AM EVER IN THE MARKET FOR ANOTHER ONE . IT WILL NOT BE Draw-Tite. 184848

  • Recommended Trailer Towing Kit for a 2005 Nissan Xterra
I do have everything you'll need to tow a trailer with your 2005 Nissan Xterra (trailer hitch, wiring harness, ball mount/hitch ball) but we currently do not have an all inclusive kit. For a trailer hitch confirmed to fit your vehicle, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75291 which is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver tube opening. As you can see in the installation video I have attached for you, the hitch is very simple to install. Then for a trailer...

  • Differences Between Hitches Available for 2010 Nissan Xterra
There is very little difference between the hitches listed for your Xterra. Draw-Tite has a 3500 lb towing 350 lb tongue weight capacity. The Curt hitch, part # 13514 has a 4000 lb towing 400 lb tongue weight capacity and is very similar in appearance to the other hitch. The installation procedure for the hitches is identical. The hitches would be partially visible from the rear. The side flanges where the hitch bolts to the vehicle frame would be hidden, with the receiver opening...

You want to select a towing ball mount with the amount of height rise or drop that allows the trailer's frame to be level with the ground when it is hitched to the Xterra. Level trailers tow much better so this is something you want to get right. You will need to know the height of the level trailer frame and the height of the receiver opening on the vehicle. You can refer to the linked article that shows exactly how to measure to select the correct ball mount. When we installed Draw-Tite...

I checked with Magnaflow and the issue is that the routing of the exhaust pipes that are in the Magnaflow Catback kit # MF15583 would interfere with the factory hitch of the 2010-2013 Nissan Xterras. I am sure that if you took the # MF15583 to a qualified muffler shop they would be able to come up with a way to route the exhaust around the hitch so that it wouldn't interfere.
