1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

I needed a hard-to-find hitch for my '98 Montero, overnight, no less. I ordered this part along with a harness from etrailer with overnight shipping. I don't live at the end of the world, but you can see it from here, so I wasn't optimistic about everything arriving on time for my trip. Shortly after the order was placed I received emails from etrailer's staff indicating the part wasn't at their main warehouse and would have to be sourced from another. They updated me throughout the day and the following morning. The parts arrived early afternoon. Installation took little time at all with their helpful wiring harness install video. Great thanks to George J, Bridget A and Madison H and others for seeing this through.

2020 Ram 1500

Got this for my 1985 Mitsubishi Montero. Website recommended a different hitch for my rig, but I wanted this one with the 2.0" receiver so I could use the same drawbar as I use on my other rig, and other Montero owners assured me this would fit with minor modification of the bumper on my '85 Montero. Both were right--good on etrailer for noting that the one with the smaller receiver was a better fit, both in terms of weight limits and with regard to the bumper issue, but the Montero group was right in that the bolt pattern is correct, once I made a small cut in the bumper to accomodate the support brace on this hitch. When installed, it looks perfectly designed for my rig (see photo)

1997 Toyota Land Cruiser

This receiver was not recommended for 1997 Land Cruiser but I wanted the class III unit. Fit was great although I had to add M12-1.25 nuts to the bottom bolts as the holes were not threaded. Very secure and works great.

2010 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

Not much to say apart from the fact that product arrived promptly and in good shape. Took about 10 minutes to install, including finding the right socket wrench in my garage, which was probably 9 minutes of the total install time. I installed this on my 1996 montero, holes lined up perfectly, the bolts were the right size, everything like it should be.

The closest option we have to the 3-1/2" x 2" bolt pattern you mentioned that your 1989 Land Rover Defender bumper has is the Curt # 13018 which has a mounting hole pattern that measures 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" as shown in the included diagram. The only option to get a trailer hitch receiver to fit your bumper would be to have a receiver like the # 325-GH-002 welded to a plate that is custom made and drilled to fit your mounting plate. I do have a trailer hitch for your 1990 Mitsubishi Montero, but I spoke with my contact at Curt and he confirmed that the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch, # 13091, was designed to fit only the 1992 to 2000 Mitsubishi Montero except the sport model. The distance between the holes is 3-3/8 inch and 1-3/4 inch. The only hitch we have for your 1991 Mitsubishi Montero is the Curt part # C12181 which is a Class II hitch with a 1-1/4 inch opening. The 2 inch hitch size is only used on higher capacity vehicles like trucks and SUVs.

Curt lists the # 13091 as a fit for the 1992-2000 Mitsubishi Montero but not the 1991 Land Cruiser. They do however list the the # C12181 as being a fit for both the Montero and the 1991 Land Cruiser, so obviously the bolt pattern is identical. Since the C12181 listed as a fit for your vehicle has a 1-1/4 inch receiver tube, my educated guess would be that Curt doesn't list the almost identical # 13091 as a fit for the 1991 Land Cruiser because it must have a lower towing capacity. Towing Capacity of Curt Hitch for a 1996 Mitsubishi Montero
You are correct. The Curt hitch part # 13091 that you referenced is rated for towing up to 4,000 lbs. Because of that you would be limited to only towing that even if your vehicle is rated to tow more. In a towing setup your overall towing capacity is only as strong as the weakest component. Bolt on Receiver Tube For Standard Pintle Hook Bolt Pattern
If you have more than the 2 sets of vertical holes the Buyers Products Black Receiver Tube # 3371804055 will bolt to your plate. I believe is the type of product that you are looking for to accept your bike rack. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13091 has the same vertical spacing of 1-3/4" and horizontal spacing of 3-3/8" of the Buyers Products 2-1/2" Pintle Hook Mount # 337PM25612. This may also work dependent on your plate.

1990 Mitsubishi Montero Hitch Recommendation
The only hitch we offer for your 1990 Mitsubishi Montero is the Curt hitch part # 13091 which has a 1-1/4 inch opening. The only way to use a 2 inch hitch accessory with this hitch would be to use the hitch adapter part # HTAD. Only thing about hitch adapters like this is that they cut the capacity of the hitch they are used on in half.

Can Curt Trailer Hitch # 13091 Be Mounted Upside Down and Retain the Same Towing Capacity
I spoke with my contact at Curt about trailer hitch # 13091. The hitch is designed to fit a 1992 to 2000 Mitsubishi Montero 2 or 4 door (but not Sport models), so if it is being installed on one of those specific vehicles, it cannot be used upside down. However, if you plan to use this trailer hitch for a different application like a custom build, then you can install it upside down and it will maintain the 400 pound tongue weight capacity and 4,000 pound gross trailer weight capacity....

I do have an option for you, however the Buyers Products Receiver Tube # 3371804055 that you referenced will not line up with the existing holes on your Mitsubishi Montero's frame behind the bumper.
