Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Pro Series Pilot comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Pilot. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Pro Series Pilot Controls and Components

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Pro Series Pilot keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override. The Pilot is especially flexible; its microprocessor allows the controller to even be mounted upside down, and it will still give you a readable display. The Pilot can go wherever you need it. Plus, the included wiring adapter eases installation overall. The custom connector end plugs into the port on your vehicle and the other end plugs into the controller.

Installation Accessories

You can use etrailer's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Video Transcript for Pro Series Pilot Trailer Brake Controller: The Breakdown

Today, we're going to be taking a look at part number 80550. This is the Pilot 2-6 Brake Time Delayed Electronic Brake Controller from Pro Series. It's going to work for 2-6 brakes, which is going to be up to 3 brake axles. One of the main features I want to show you is the large, easy to read dual-digital disk play. I have it connected to our power source. That way, you can just get a really quick look at how easy that display is to see.

Nice, quick response time too. Please keep in mind that this installer must be installed with a 12 volt negative ground system. It's going to provide flexible mounting options and can be installed in any direction. It's got a microprocessor that's going to allow the controller to be mounted upside down and still have a readable display. It's got a feature protection against short circuit or loss of ground. A standard mounting bracket is included as well as the hardware needed to get it attached.

That's going to go on the side here towards the back of the controller. It's got the mounting slots in there and then you can see the different options that you have as far as a versatile mount. This inaudible 00:01:12 right here is going to be the ball mount interface. It's an optional mounting ball pivot kit that we sell that works with this. It's sold separately. You can find that with part number 5298.

A pulse preventer is also recommended. That's available and sold separately with part number 5501. The wheel on this side of the controller is designed to control and adjust the breaking power. This right here is going to be the manual override or the manual slide knob. The wiring system is a simple plug and play feature that allows for easy and quick connection and disconnection. This is designed for use with electric brakes.

It's going to give us an overall width of 3 1/2 inches, overall length of 4 3/4 of an inch, and then an overall height of about 1 9/16ths of an inch. It's going to be covered with a limited lifetime warranty. If a custom break wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required: Either a 20 amp circuit breaker for 2-4 brake applications or a 30 amp circuit breaker for 6-8 brake applications. When it comes to the wiring on this system, your white wire is going to be your ground. Your black is going to be for the positive battery. Your red is going to be for the cold side of the stop light switch, and then your blue wire is going to be for the brake output to the trailer. That's going to do it for our review of part number 80550. This is the Pilot 2-6 Brake Time Delayed Electronic Brake Controller from Pro Series. .

good value but the swivel mount being optional should be made more clear

Plugged directly into the connector provide by the tow package on my 2019 4-Runner. Every thing lit up like it suppose to on the trailer break controller.

by:

This was long enough to route across from the emergency brake to the center console. Grounded white wire to a bolt under the dash with a 10mm nut. Easy

by:

After 1 year of flawless use I am very pleased with this wiring harness for my 2016 Toyota 4Runner. The installation was super simple and easy; plug and play. I would definitely purchase again for another vehicle.

by:

worked as described

by:

Plug and play! I've had the same brake controller on several vehicles...get the correct harnest for your vehicle and easy peezy! Advice: Plan on how you're going to route your wire harnest first before mounting brackets.

by:

Added this to my 4Runner to pull my motorcycle trailer. Easy to install works as expected. Very happy with product and etrailer, they will get my future business.

by:

Received it fast and it worked great. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Worked exactly as expected. The install took me about an hour total because I needed to remove some trim panels to attach the ground.

by:

I used this product before on a 2018 4 runner now on my 2021 love it works easy. Was in a bind
To get trailer and needed trailer brake paid extra to get it day before I headed out and it did arrive and installed ! Thank you

by:

Great deal

easy to use brake box

by:

The wiring for the Tekonsha proportional brake control fit my 2016 4 Runner perfectly. Plus the videos that etrailer has showing where the plug in is under the dash made finding it a cinch.
Thank you so much etrailer- Anthony, one of their staff even sent me the links for the wiring and the brake controller videos so I wouldn't have to hunt for them. Amazing staff- very helpful. Thank you so much.

by:

fit, and worked perfectly

by:

Great product

by:

I haven't installed anything from my order just yet so i can't comment on the products just yet. I'm sure that these, like the others I've purchased over the years will do the job as advertised. This isn't my first time dealing with etrailer, so I'm not at all concerned with the job before me. Very few companies I've dealt with are as capable and competent as etrailer. Their customer service is second to none. Every employee I've spoken with has been well versed in the products as well as their uses and their installation. I highly recommend. Love these folks.

by:

Plugged in to 2016 4Runner TE and Tekonsha Voyager brake controller. Works great. Easy install. Be sure to connect white ground lug to a good metal grounded location. Simple to install and price is great.

by:

I ordered this product from Etrailer ( 3041-P). It is made very well and the instructions for plugging it into my 4Runner were spot on. I needed to confirm of fit and availability and talked to there customer service Rep Christina. I was delivered to my house in just a day or two.

by:

This OEM adapter made the Tekonsha brake controller installation a very simple process. Installed in about 2 minutes.

by:

The usual "excellent customer service" and "fair product pricing" that Etrailer.com has spoiled us with for years now...nothing to see...move along...lol

by:

Purchased Brake Controller and Wiring adapter. It was just as easy (or even easier) an installation than described. Dealer wanted about $150 to "wire" my brake installer. I noticed this product on-line and read reviews and decided to see if it really was what it said. It took my son around 10-15 minutes to get it mounted and ground. When plugged into trailer, it worked!!
When contacting Customer Service, I was very impressed.

by:

Installed on a 2016 SR5 4Runner. Plugged right in, white wire with pre-crimped terminal loop made it a snap. Super easy install.

The Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller for 2018 Toyota TRD Off Road 4x4 4Runner
Easy to install
I pull 4800 pounds behind my 4Runner after a year no problems yet.
The price was right,
Easy to install.
Thank You

by:

Worked like a charm. Installed easily in 2014 4Runner & 1997 Chevy 2500. No problems, no hiccups, no glitches pulling a 7x20 12k flatbed. etrailer.com videos, specifically installation videos are very valuable and one reason I keep coming back to etrailer.com. The folks where I bought the trailer said I made a great choice with this controller. I couldn't agree more.

by:

Super easy and a direct plug-in to factory wiring.

Hello Patrick, Between the 2 brake controllers that you mentioned I would go with the the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. The main reason is because the Pro Series Pilot # 80550 is time delayed, so there will be a delay from the time that you hit your brakes in your GMC for the brakes to be applied on the trailer. • Is The Tekonsha 3040-P Wiring Adapter Supposed To Have A Ground Strap Like The 3041-P?
The Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3040-P is supposed to have the additional ground strap for your 2019 Toyota Sequoia. This was something that was not always on the harness but was added some time ago as the factory wiring ground was insufficient. This will allow you to properly connect your Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Controller # 90195 to your Sequoia. While it will look similar to the Tekonsha # 3041-P they are not interchangeable as they terminals are different.

  • Does 2020 Toyota 4Runner With 7-Way Need Brake Controller to Power Trailer Brakes
There will be no default power going to your trailer's brakes without a brake controller on your 2020 Toyota 4Runner with the factory 7-way. So in order to activate your the brakes, you do need to have a working brake controller; thankfully, with your '20 4Runner with the 7-way, these are just plug and play so installation is simple. The brake controllers I recommend checking out are the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 for the best overall brake controller, or the Draw-Tite I-Command for the best...

  • Where to Find Brake Controller Install Port for 2017 Toyota 4Runner with Tow Package
The correct brake controller install harness for your 2017 Toyota 4Runner is the part # 3041-P which installs by connecting to a white plug near the emergency brake pedal. I attached a picture that shows where you'll find the connector near the pedal. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses...

  • Where to Ground Brake Controller Wiring Adapter 3041-P in 2019 Toyota 4Runner
I have added a photo from the linked installation video of a brake controller install on a 4Runner that shows where you can ground the Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers # 3041-P. This is on a '17 4Runner but the grounding point will be the same for your 2019 Toyota 4Runner, under the dash. If you go to about the 3:45 mark of the video you can see this taking place, and you will be using the adapter's self-tapping screw.

  • Solution for Trailer Brake Controller Causing ABS Error Message on 2015 Toyota 4Runner
The issue you described when using a brake controller isn't too uncommon on certain late model Toyota vehicles like your 2015 4Runner. These particular vehicles are more sensitive to the controller's red wire backfeeding to the stop light switch, which is what triggers the ABS error message. The only way to prevent this is to use the a diode with the harness and the Pigtail Harness # 7865 that you mentioned offers a perfect solution as it features a diode on the red wire. The Plug-In...

  • Recommended Brake Controller for a 2020 Toyota 4Runner
It's my understanding that your 2020 Toyota 4Runner should have come with a connector already installed up and behind the emergency brake pedal. If all you found was a bundle of wires and then a connector in your glove box then you should be able to either install that connector so that you can use an adapter, or you can possibly bypass the harness you found if the wiring under your dash is long enough. I can make some recommendations for both options but I will say that I don't know what...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution for 2016 Toyota 4Runner and Flagstaff Travel Trailer
I can help you get a easy to use weight distribution for your 2016 Toyota 4Runner and Flagstaff Travel Trailer. To choose the right weight distribution it will be based on loaded tongue weight which is typically between 10-15% of the trailer gross weight and anything in addition to that loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. With a weight of 5,350lbs max this can be anywhere from 418-802lbs of tongue weight. I have linked a Help Article on how to determine your loaded tongue weight....

  • Brake Controller and Wiring Harness for a 2016 Toyota 4Runner with Factory Tow Package
Since your 2016 Toyota 4Runner already has the factory tow package and trailer connector then adding a brake controller will be easy. I recommend the Tekonsha P3 brake controller # 90195 because it has multiple presets for towing different trailers, a boost feature, works with electric over hydraulic and electric braking systems, and has easy to understand diagnostic messages. The only other part you will need is wiring harness # 3041-P to plug it directly into your 4Runner. I have linked...

  • Brake Switch Wire to Connect Brake Control on 2010 Ford Escape and 2015 Toyota 4Runner
On your 2010 Ford Escape the brake switch wire you will need is a purple wire with a white stripe. This is the wire that connects to the red brake controller wire. I have linked a video that will help. Go to about the 10 minute, 35 second mark for the brake switch connection. Your 2015 Toyota 4Runner should have come with a factory installed 7-Way which means the brake controller can just be plugged in using the appropriate wiring harness. For a Tekonsha brake controller use # 3041-P....

The solution to fixing the ABS Error on a 2016 Toyota 4Runner with trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160 is to combine the Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers part # 3041-P and Pigtail Wiring Harness with Diode part # 7865. • Easy to Install Brake Controller Recommendation for 2019 Toyota 4Runner
For your 2019 Toyota 4Runner with a factory 7-way I have a really easy brake controller solution that does not require you to find the brake controller install port under your vehicle dash. The easiest to install brake controller that also works really well is the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180. Basically this just plugs into an active 7-way and once you sync it to your phone it's ready to go. This brake controller is proportional which means it senses the amount of deceleration your...

  • Why is there a Second Ground Wire in Brake Control Wiring Harness # 3041-P for 2017 Toyota 4Runner
The grounds on many Toyota vehicles including your 2017 Toyota 4Runner has proven to be insufficient so an additional ground wire has been added to help. There is likely an existing ground location under the dash you can use or a bare metal surface that would be perfect for a ground. The firewall is one option. Just as long as it isn't a painted or coated surface and just bare metal it will work.
