Today we'll be reviewing part number C45500. This is the Curt Forged Tow Hook from Curt Off Road Accessories. It is designed to fit a 2-inch by 2-inch trailer hitch receiver and when it comes to the capacity of the tow hook it is going to be limited to the capacity of the hitch. If we take a look at the overall measurement, measuring from end-to-end, it's going to give us an overall length of about 11-3/4 inch. It's made from a solid steel construction with a black carbide finish, so it is going to stand up really well against rust and corrosion. If we take a measurement of the gap that we have between the end of hook and the shank portion here, measuring at a straight line going across, that measurement is going to give us a measurement of about 2 inches. That's the opening you're going to have there to get whatever you need to get in there, whether it's a strap or a chain, you got 2 inches to work with in this gap here. Let's take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the shank.
That's going to give us a measurement of 1-1/2 inch. The actual tow hook is going to provide us with a width of 1-1/4 inch, a very heavy duty tow hook. Again the overall length is going to measure 11-3/4 inch. If we take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of this portion right here of the opening, that's going to give us a measurement of about 8 inches. Really simple installation. All you got to do is slide the shank portion of the tow hook into the receiver tube of your hitch.
Again it is designed for a 2-inch by 2-inch trailer hitch receiver. Then you're going to need to install a hitch pin and clip, or a hitch pin and lock. These are going to be sold separately. You can check out etrailer.com for some options. The one I'm using for our demonstration today is part number PC3.
It's going to be your standard 5/8-inch pin that comes with a clip. That's going to do it for our review of part number C45500. This is the Curt Forged Tow Hook. .

I ended up painting mine Red. Easy to see even when covered in mud. Is used multiple times a month during the Summer. Even used a few times to pull me out. A quick easy way to pull someone when their shifting linkage got jammed up on rocks going up hill. My JKU Rubicon got him up the rest of the way without any trouble.
I ended up buying two more for off road friends.....

Love this hook gets a lot of use throughout the Summer. From pulling stuck vehicles to pulling logs. Painted fire engine red to be seen easily by those on the trails for a quick hook up. Even used once to pull me out!

This forged hook has a rating exceeding the hitch and can pull at any angle. And there's no need to mess with sticking threads on a clevis. This is just the versatile type of hitch hook that I needed. I just wish it was made in the USA.

TOO BIG AND HEAVY FOR WHAT IT IS. IT HAS A 10K# CAPACITY. THERE ARE SMALLER/ LIGHTER OPTIONS THAT WILL PERFORM EQUALLY TO THIS HOOK

Heavy duty, solid hook. Only improvement would be if it also had a heavy duty clasp to prevent sling from dropping off when loose. But other than bolt on hooks none of those that were for 2-inch receivers and heavy duty included a clasp. Go figure.

This thing is a beast...very tough. I use it for pulling vehicles out of mud and sometimes pulling trees to my yard. I love it.

Nice unit. Had to put a thin layer like inner tube around it, because the hook fits a little loose and will rattle. Not really a problem, really like the look and easy use for hooking on a strap. Will recommend to everyone in my club.

What that means is that if you were in a recovery situation where you were putting an extreme amount of strain on this hook the hitch would fail long before the hook.
