SMI Tow Bar Braking Systems - SM99629

This stop light switch kit is designed for towed vehicles that do not have functional brake lights when the engine is off. Works with SMI Air Force One supplemental braking system to notify you when the brakes are applied in your towed car.

Features:

  • Activates the monitoring system of your supplemental braking system when the brake pedal is depressed in your towed vehicle
    • Ensures that the supplemental braking system is functioning properly
    • Designed for use with SMI Air Force One supplemental braking system
  • Works with vehicles that do not have functional brake lights when the engine is off or the ignition is in the tow position
    • Also great for towed cars that need the battery to be disconnected
  • Simple installation with included hardware
  • Made in the USA

SMI's Air Force One supplemental braking system is designed to notify you when your towed vehicle's brake lights are on. But some vehicles have brake lights that do not activate when the engine is off. Because the stop light switch on these vehicles is not functional while the car is being towed, SMI has created a separate stop light switch that you can add onto your towed car.

Just connect the switch to your towed car's battery and to its output air line. This way the switch will sense via the air line when the car's brake pedal is applied, and it will then send a signal to the monitoring system.

Video Transcript for SMI Air Pressure Stop Light Switch Kit Installation - 2013 Chevrolet Captiva Sport

Today on our 2013 Chevrolet Captiva Sport we're going to add the SMI air pressure stop light switch kit, part number SM99629. Now with our air line already run here in the engine compartment we'll location a suitable mounting location, cut the line, and add our stop light switch kit. Switch kit will be the pressure sensor, a t to go into the vacuum line, and a 90-degree valve going to the bottom of the switch. Let's go ahead and cut our line and install the t. Here we'll use the tubing cutter so we get a clean square cut on our line. Then to install the t we'll press it in firmly into the air line, pull back to lock it in place. We'll do that on both sides of our t.

Out the other side of our t we can use the piece of air line supplied with the install kit. I'm going to go ahead and shorten it up with my tubing cutter. Take that piece, put it into the t, and then the other end will get the 90-degree fitting. This fitting will go onto the pressure sensor which we can go ahead and thread on now. Now keep in mind when tightening down the fitting that it's just a plastic housing and you wouldn't overtighten it and break it.

Then we'll take the 90-degree fitting and go into our air line. Press it in firmly, pull it back to lock in place. We'll have two electrical connections. One side of our connection here is going to get connected to the gray wire that ultimately runs to our indicator light. Using the supplied ring terminal we'll go ahead and attach it now. We can strip back our wire, install the ring terminal, and then crimp it down.

Then we'll remove the nut and washer, install the ring terminal, reinstall the washer and nut. I'll just leave them finger tight this time. Now the other side of our pressure sensor needs power. We're going to run it to the power wire that was previously installed over here by the battery. To do that we're going to remove the electrical tape and cut the butt connector out. We can then attach or install a new butt connector that's slightly larger that will accommodate two power wires on one side and the fuse holder on the other.

Go ahead and prepare the wires here after I remove the butt connector. Now the power wire that we're going to run from our pressure switch will be the orange wire provided with the kit. We'll attach one side of the pressure switch and the other side over onto the new butt connector going to our fuse holder. Let's go ahead and connect our ring terminal. Now once we have our hardware installed we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Then once we have it tightened down I'm going to wrap it up with some electrical tape because it's going to get stored between the inner fender well and the battery. We can go ahead and put it in the stored position, taking our orange power wire, routing it around the battery, and over where we're going to be making our power connection. I'll go ahead and strip it back. Then we'll add the butt connector. Now when adding two wires to a butt connector I like to strip them back a little further than normal and twist them together. Then we can add our butt connector. It will help to ensure both wires together for a nice solid connection point. The other side will be our fuse holder. Now once we've got our connection made I'm going to go ahead and wrap it up with some black electrical tape. With that, this will complete the install of the SMI air pressure stop light switch kit for towed vehicle's, part number SM99629, on our 2013 Chevrolet Captiva Sport. .

This is the second vehicle I've installed the switch in with the SMI Air Force 1 braking system. It's the best way to send a signal to an LED light on the dash of the Motorhome to let me know that the system is working. Great product. Easy to install. 451045

Just finished installing the SMI AF1 on a 2012 Tiffin Phaeton and 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. While it took me substantially longer than the pro's, I found it straightforward to install and well documented, between SMI's video and etrailer's video. The brake system itself seems to me to be both well designed and well made. So far, it works just as advertised. 172065

  • Supplemental Flat Towing Equipment and Braking System for Air-Brake Equipped Motorhome Towing F350
  • To safely tow your truck, you'll need a base plate, tow bar, safety cables, a wiring solution to ensure the truck taillights work in conjunction with the coach and a supplemental braking system. I'd recommend the Blue Ox # BX2163 base plate kit and the Blue Ox Avail tow bar, part # BX7420. The Avail is rated for vehicles weighing up to 10,000 lbs, which should be fine for your F350. To wire the taillights of the truck, I'd recommend a bulb and socket kit like part # BX8869. You'll...

  • How Do You Know if the Stop Light Switch Kit is Needed When Installing SMI Air Force One
  • Here's how you will know if the SMI Air Pressure Stop Light Switch Kit # SM99629 is needed when using the SMI Air Force One supplemental braking system. With you engine turned off on your vehicle go out and press the brake pedal of the vehicle. If the brake lights come on then you don't need this switch. If they only come on when the vehicle is on the part # SM99629 would be needed. I attached an install video link for this product for you to check out.

  • Recommended Flat Towing Setup for a 2014/2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Towed by a RV
  • The best and safest way to flat tow your 2014 or 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is with a flat towing setup. Tow hooks were not designed to be used for flat towing purposes. There are 5 components to a flat towing setup: Tow bar, base plate kit, safety cable set, tow bar wiring and a supplemental braking system. Base plates are essential and the ones I recommend are the Blue Ox # BX1136 because the draw bars are easy to remove when your Jeep isn't being towed. The most popular and compatible...

  • Troubleshooting Jeep Cherokee Turn Signals that Stop Working When Brakes Apply while Flat Towing
  • Since your brake lights don't come on in your Jeep Cherokee when the ignition is off (and I am assuming you are flat towing with the ignition off) then you wouldn't need a brake light relay like part # RM-88400 as this is normally the fix for this problem. Now if you do flat tow your vehicle with the key in the on position and that does activate the brake lights then you would need the relay. You didn't mention what type of wiring/lighting you are using either and that is a big factor...
