The 9700 from Roadmaster is a portable braking system that sits in front of the driver's seat of your towed vehicle. It easily attaches to the brake pedal and taps into your tow bar wiring to determine when you RV's brakes are applied. A preset amount of pressure (light, medium, or heavy) is chosen during setup. Then, each time you brake in the RV, the brake pedal in your towed car will be applied with that preset intensity. The 9700 can also be adjusted to only brake in an emergency breakaway situation. Hookup and disconnect can be done in a minute or two. The 9700 is comprehensive and includes an emergency breakaway kit and an LED and auditory monitoring system.

Preset Braking

The 9700 is designed to activate the brakes in your towed car upon receiving a signal from your RV that the motor home's brakes have been applied. There are 3 different pressure settings - light, medium, and heavy braking - to fit your preferences. You can also set the 9700 to activate in an emergency breakaway situation only. With the 9700 you get real-time braking action, ensuring that your towed car brakes at the same time and for the same duration as the brakes in your RV are applied. In addition, because this system only activates when you apply the brakes in your RV, there will be no false braking when you hit bumps or pot holes.

Installation

The 9700 unit is powered by the 12-volt accessory outlet in your towed car. To get the required braking signal, the brake light wire on the unit connects to your towed car's tow bar wiring. Anytime the braking signal is received from your RV by the tow bar wiring, the 9700 is triggered to respond. As a result, when you apply the brakes in your RV and your brake lights illuminate, this signals the 9700 to apply the brakes in the towed car.

Connecting and disconnecting the 9700 unit is a breeze. Situate the 9700 in your towed car between the driver's seat and the brake pedal. Because the unit relies on being level to function properly, it has 4 independently adjustable feet to keep it stable in cars with uneven floors. The seat brace also adjusts up or down to ensure a perfect fit and proper leverage when pressed up against the driver's seat. Once you have the unit properly situated, position the brake pedal clamp over the brake pedal. Plug in the power cord. Before towing, make sure you release any air from the reservoir using the air relief button and then press the test button so that the system can cycle to deplete any vacuum pressure in the brakes.

Visual and Audible Alerts

The visual and audible alerts provided by the 9700 keep you updated on the status of your towed car's braking. Using the LED light and audible alerts, you will be in the loop.

The LED light illuminates whenever the brake pedal in your towed car is applied. This visual reference lets you know if the braking system is functioning properly. If the light is on but you are not braking, or if you are braking but the light does not come on, then there may be an issue with the braking system.

The audible alert informs you of extended braking. This is important because extended braking can damage your vehicle's brakes. To help prevent damage, the 9700 will release pressure and stop applying the brakes in your car. If you were braking during that period of time, you will need to let off the brake and reapply in order to get the 9700 to reactivate. If you were not braking during that period of time, then a system malfunction is likely and it will require immediate attention.

This is exactly what I was looking for to get my car ready for towing. It’s a small car so size was a concern and I was glad to see I could opt out of using this as an auxiliary braking system and just use it as a brake away device only. 861501

  • Installing Roadmaster 9700 Portable Braking System on 2014 Chevy Equinox
Thank you for your recent purchases! The Roadmaster 9700 Portable Braking System # RM-9700 that you referenced will work great on your 2014 Chevy Equinox. With this system on your vehicle you will need to add the Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751439, which allows the RV monitoring system on the Roadmaster 9700 work properly, and the 12V Outlet Kit # RM-9332 to provide power to the unit. I have attached a couple installation videos for each of these parts on your Chevy Equinox that you can...

  • Is the Roadmaster 9700 System # RM-9700 Recommended for a 2015 Jeep Wrangler
The Roadmaster 9700 Portable Supplemental Braking System # RM-9700 is a very good Supplemental Braking System option that will serve you well while flat towing your 2015 Jeep Wrangler. The main reason that some people choose to not use a portable towing system like the 9700 is because they do not want to store it or have to install it every time they get ready to flat tow. For people that have this viewpoint (and if you would rather not have to do that) we recommend a permanent install...

  • GM Update for Fuse Pulling in 2010-2017 Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrains Flat Towing
I found the update that GM put out for the 2010-2017 Chevy Equinox and 2010-2017 GMC Terrains with a 4 cylinder engine that covers the fuses that need to be pulled when flat towing. Now you only have to pull the 16 fuse. It used to be that you need to pull the 32 fuse too but that was causing steering system wobble when flat towing so it's now just 16. In 2018 The Equinox does not need to have any fuses pulled and the 2018 Terrain is not flat-towable.

  • How to Determine if a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Can Be Flat Towed
The flat towing of any vehicle is always subject to the guidance of the auto maker that built it. Certain versions of some cars cannot be flat towed and the owner's manual will state as much. Other vehicles may be flat-towable only when they have certain specific equipment installed. While you will find lots of helpful folks providing their experiences on forums and online groups the one authority for what should be done with the vehicle itself to flat tow it is that auto maker. I looked up the instructions from Roadmaster for the 9700 Portable Braking System, part # RM-9700. • Why Diodes With Roadmaster 9700 Braking System
No, the turn signals or hazard lights are not going to trigger the brakes of the Roadmaster 9700 Portable Supplemental Braking System # RM-9700 with the use of the two diodes. You correctly noted it did need two because of your Jeep's combined lighting system, but the diodes are simply preventing feedback. They are needed to attach to the green and yellow wires because the system only activates when it receives feedback from both wires at the same time. So just the turn signal won't activate it.

  • Best Supplemental Braking Options for 2017 GMC Terrain
There are more than two braking options for your 2017 Terrain. But I'll give you the two best options. For a permanent install the DUO part # SM99251 is the best option. It installs the easiest and performs the best. Then for a setup similar to the 9700 the Blue Ox Patriot part # BRK2019 is the best removable option. This is a more reliable and better performing kit by far than the 9700. You only need one of these systems installed.
