Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig CG-9 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull it and secure to the red hook attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

Drive forward so that the chains can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2018 Subaru Impreza Premium with Tire Size 205/50-17
What we've found that is if you check with dealerships near mountain areas that have tire chain requirements they'll have come up with a solution they can safely recommend. We installed the Konig Tire Chains part # TH00023090 on a 2017 Subaru Impreza with tire size 205/70-17 like what you have and we found they fit and worked well. These are Class S compatible which means they do not require much fender clearance. I attached an install video that shows the chains installed on the 2017...

  • Recommended Low-Profile Tire Chains for a 2010 Ford Transit Connect
I have a good recommendation for you! If you need snow chains for your 2010 Ford Transit Connect with 205/65R15 tires, then I recommend the Konig Self-Tensioning Low-Profile Chains, part # TH00023090. They are only 9mm thick and feature D-shape links for excellent traction. They are self-tensioning, so they automatically tighten and align as you drive and have a very easy installation. Of course, these are not a confirmed fit for your Transit since the manual states not to use chains....

  • Thule Snow Chain Max Speed Recommendation
With the Thule Tire chains like the Thule Tire Chains # TH00023090 installed we typically recommend a speed rating of between 30-35 miles per hour as the maximum speed. There are no chains that will allow you to travel faster than that. Also, if you are in snowy enough conditions to call for chains you probably shouldn't be going faster than 30-35 MPH even with the extra traction that chains provide.

  • Fit of Thule CG9 Tire Chains on 205/55-16 Tires on 2014 Toyota Corolla
The Thule # TH00023090 Self Tensioning GC9 Tire Chains in size 090 are indeed a fit for the 205/55-16 tires on your 2014 Toyota Corolla. We categorize tire chains fits by the size of the tire, not by the vehicle. I was unable to access an online copy of your owner's manual, so you might want to check with your dealer to see if they had any advice or prohibitions regarding using tire chains. The chains meet Class S specifications, at only 9mm thick. When you receive the chains, I'd recommend...

I checked the owner's manual for the 2004 Acura RSX. On page 188 in the Maintenance section it states to use tire chains only on the front wheels. It also states you can only use Class S chains only. If you want to let me know what size tires are installed on the vehicle I will be glad to make some recommendations that will work for you.

  • Will Konig XG-12 Pro Tire Chains Fit A 185/65R14 Tire Size
Hey Pete, It looks like the Konig XG-12 Pro only fits larger wheel sizes so you'd need to go with their CG-9 model which would be part # TH00023060. This set of chains is self-tensioning, making them only take a few minutes to put on and be ready to go. I've attached a short video below where Adam will show you how to install them. You will want to look through your vehicle's owner's manual and make sure that the manufacturer okays the use of tire chains on your vehicle though.

  • Availability of Snow Chains for 205/55-16 Tires on a 2006 Volkswagon Jetta TDI
Yes, we have several styles of snow tire chains that will fit on 205/55-16 tires, see link. I did a bit of research and could not find any information on manufacturer requirements for snow chains on the 2006 VW Jetta TDI, so you will need to check with your dealer or your owners manual to determine if there are clearance ratings that will need to be adhered to. All of the snow chains that we carry list the clearance in millimeters, so you can select the proper size chain for clearance...

  • Thule Snow Chains for Maximum Clearance on 2013 Scion FR-S
Clearance refers to the overall width or diameter of a tire chain. This measurement is important because certain vehicles have restrictions regarding the amount of available space between each wheel well and tire. There may be a limited amount of room between your wheel and various braking or suspension components on your vehicle, thus prohibiting large chains from being used on your particular vehicle. The Thule Standard Snow Tire Chains CB-12, # TH01221090, which you reference, require...
