Question:
Im looking at tire chains for my scion frs. Im looking at thule CB-12 and CG-9 and wondering what chains would give me the most clearance and least worry about tearing my car up. Im a little confused how clearance ratings work and am not sure if it means the 9mm chain gives 9mm of clearance or needs 9mm of clearance. Also if you know of a chain that will give me more clearance please suggest it. Thanks

Clearance refers to the overall width or diameter of a tire chain. This measurement is important because certain vehicles have restrictions regarding the amount of available space between each wheel well and tire. There may be a limited amount of room between your wheel and various braking or suspension components on your vehicle, thus prohibiting large chains from being used on your particular vehicle.
The Thule Standard Snow Tire Chains CB-12, # TH01221090, which you reference, require 12 millimeters of clearance and offer little interference and superior traction.
The Thule Self-Tensioning, Low-Profile Snow Tire Chains CG9, # TH00204090, require 9mm of clearance and offer minimal interference, but they are going provide a little less traction. If you are most interested in clearance, I recommend going with # TH00023090.
These chains fit tire size 215/45-17. They are easy to install and work very well. Check out the FAQ articles I attached for more information.
Make sure you should check your owner's manual for any restrictions on snow chains.
