Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if chains might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XG-12 tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable, easy to mount, and give you constant traction - and they're lightweight and compact, so they store in your vehicle nicely too. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they self-tension and self-center as you drive, ensuring a perfect fit, no matter the profile or wear pattern of your tire. Plus, you only have to get out of your vehicle one time - once they're installed, there's no need to drive forward, stop, and recheck their tension.

Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on passenger vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Most newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large aftermarket tires - will require Class S chains. If you're unsure about the class of your vehicle, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip. Pull the chain up to the center of the tire and secure it to the red hook that is attached to the tensioning cable.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Drive forward so that the chain can self-tension and self-center, giving you a perfect fit.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2013 Toyota Highlander

These tire chains have been wonderful. They are easy to put on and even easier to take off. I use them on a very icy steep gravel driveway (more than a half mile in length). They provide excellent traction and break up the ice so I can use my other vehicles on the driveway. I like these so much that I purchased them for two other vehicles.

I hesitate a bit to leave this review, because it's based on very limited experience. I recently moved into the Smoky Mountain foothills, don't have a 4X4, and last winter a couple times was stuck not being able to make it up my steep, narrow driveway after a snow. So, I purchased these tire chains. I did a couple dry-run installs/removals and was very pleased with the ease of installation, the self-adjusters worked great, etc. However, I've never actually had to drive in the snow with the chains installed, so, as I said, my rating is based on limited product experience, so anyone reading this, please take that into consideration.

by:

I just try the chain on its easy to hook on and I can't wait to to try it on the first big snow storm so far so good compare to other chains I saw will let u know how it performs on the snow soon.

by:

They are really easy to install and look like they will work as stated
Not had snow to try them on yet

by:

The product is super easy to assemble once you understand how to align it with the tire. I strongly suggest you do it on the driveway so you can get the feel of it.
We were up on a mountain cabin last year when it snowed about 8 inches. These chains allowed me to come down the mountain with confidence.

Competitive price. Easy to install. Works great on my 2021 Toyota Highlander Platinum with 235/55R20 tires.

by:

Easy to install.

by:

Been using it on my high-top NV2500 to get down a super icy hill from my land. It grips the ice and makes it a non-white-knuckle ride. Impressed. I don't enjoy putting them on the tires but this is the only pair of chains I've owned and I suspect they are all a bit of a pain to install. It's not terrible, just annoying. Either way, once they're on, they work very well.

Chevrolet Colorado

I have not had to use them yet but they were easy to install while the car was in my garage. I purchased them for a road trip from Colorado to Idaho just in case I needed them and I did not have an opportunity to try them out.

by:
2019 Nissan Pathfinder

These chains were GREAT! I only needed them to get up the last 50 feet of any icy hill, but they did the trick. The installation instructions that came with them were worthless, but I found a couple of [online] videos that were very helpful. I highly recommend that you install them in your garage before you need them. I did and that made on the road installation much less stressful.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Perfect fit, less than 3 minutes per side to install on my first test to install on flat ground and fair weather. $ minutes each in bad weather, Always test the fit prior to actually needing to use the emergency chains. I just used them in Montana during a storm with heavy snow and ice covered roads. My rear wheel drive Sprinter van had no issues maintaining very good traction. Note : I was also pulling my snowmobile trailer that weighed about 2700 lbs. Going up into the mountains in gear 4 at 20 MPH More important was low gear back down the grade. They are not intended to use over 25MPH

I used this product on 6 trips because of very poor conditions of ice and snow. The chains are holding up quite well. I am over 60 years old and have no issue installing by my self because I have used them several times. It does take about 6 minutes to install on the road. I never use them with out hard pack snow. I am heading back to Montana soon and will be ready with my trusty chain kit. Also thank you for suggesting this product and getting me the CORRECT size to fit my tires.

by:

I have used these chains for one snow season so far and they are holding up really well. I love how quickly they can be put on and taken off once you have practiced a couple of times. They seem very secure and I am confident they will not come undone or damage my wheels. I bought 2 sets (for all 4 tires) and I really like how light and compact they are to store in my SUV when not being used. They provide excellent traction on ice and snow.

Subaru

Fit 100% perfectly on 245/50-20 (2022 Subaru Ascent Touring) although not listed as a "confirmed" fit for this particular model of chains. Other Konig size 255 tire chains list 245/50-20. Looking forward to trying them in the snow.

by:
Volvo Cross Country

The chains fit perfectly and George J at etrailer made sure they got shipped and delivered on time after a last minute order placement. This ensured that i had proper gear for my cross country road trip from NY to ID. Highly recommend etrailer for all your vehicle needs!

Chevrolet Tahoe

The chains worked great and weren’t too hard to figure out for the first time. They provided excellent traction in Tahoe with snow packed roads. Customer service was also excellent as I had to change the shipping after I placed the order.

by:
Toyota Tacoma

I found these tire chains easy to use and that they work as advertised. I use on a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. While the 4 wheel drive is great on the Tacoma, I have a camp that is 5 miles down a dirt road which is plowed in the winter, but not treated. The chains work great for the icy and steep stretches, giving just a bit more traction.

2019 Toyota Highlander

Thank you for your quick response on the recommended part # for the tire size on my 2019 Toyota Highlander equipped with 245/55R19. The purchase was effortless and shipped/arrived when promised. I dry fit the chains on the vehicle in our garage and they installed as described. Although available, I didn't see any chain-to-wheel contact points that required the plastic protectors. So far, very pleased working with Etrailer.com and hope the Konig tire chains will perform equally as well when needed.

by:
2017 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500

great website, products and service. Have bought a few things here, everything was great. The tires chains arrived fast and look like a heavy duty product. not sure how often i will need, them or how soon I will use them. For a Sprinter the chains only go on the rear wheels. they won't work on the front due to the location of the struts.

by:

I have not used them yet. I have great Hakka snow tires and Go-Treads traction boards. No need for chains yet. Maybe next year, but hopefully beyond that.

by:

GREAT company. They follow up after your purchase and 1 year just to make sure your satisfied. That’s a customer service level you do not experience these days in a brick and mortar business anymore much less the internet.

As for the snow chains, there’re great. I could’ve bought a cheaper version but I was concerned about my rims and these did not scratch as promised, and very easy to put on.

Very easy to install great product

by:

I'm an etrailer fan. Buttt...I took me over an our to get this item installed. Turned out the chains were twisted in a way that took myself and my wife half an hour to fix. The pictoral instructions were not good enough. A thorough description in English would really have been helpful.

by:

I wish I had taken a video of the first time I installed the chains. I had not installed chains for - probably 20-25 years. These were so easy! I literally had them on in less than a minute each side. I put them on in the garage, so had very little room to maneuver, but didn't need room anyway as these went on so quickly and easily. They stayed snug the entire time, the traction was superb in 10 inches of snow.

by:
2018 Ford Transit T250

etrailer shipping was fast (as usual). The chains come in a nice round case to house them when not in use. Instructions are straight forward and so tried them on my van immediately. They work fantastic. Have not had the chance to drive in snow/ice yet but seeing how much engineering has gone into the design/manufacturing of these is impressive. I'm so glad decided to spend a bit more money to get these vs some cheap rattle-prone product.

by:
2019 Toyota Highlander

What a breeze putting this chain on the tire (in the garage). Fortunately, I did not have to use the chains in snow but I knew the process of using them would be a breeze. The self tightening feature and the ratchet are very nice. The on-line video made the decision easy for purchase. The price point is higher than I budgeted however I spent the money knowing "quality" is a high priority and you get what you pay for!
