Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this Dexter 13 inch by 2 1/2 inch right hand free backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 8,000 pound axles. Now this is a right hand brake assembly, which is for the passenger side of your trailer that has 8,000 pound axles. And when we say right hand assembly, the way to tell if it's a right hand assembly, of course on a new assembly, it'll have a sticker that'll tell you that. But if you don't have the sticker on there, the easiest way to tell is you look at the length of the pad that's on the brake shoes. So if you notice on this one, the pads all the way from here to here, and on this one, it's all the way from here to here.

This is a longer pad. This one's the shorter pad. The shorter pad is your primary shoe. And your primary shoe will always face the front of the trailer. So it's telling you it goes this way.

So that'll show you that it's a right hand brake assembly. Now the dimension we talked about on this is a 13 by 2 1/2 inches. And what those measurements are is the 13 inch is the diameter that's measured from here to here. So this is 13 inches, and the width of the shoe is what's gonna be the 2 1/2. So you can see if we put a ruler on it, there's your 2 1/2 inch measurement.

Now these are manually adjusted breaks. And the way you would do that is by turning this adjustment wheel down here to adjust the brakes in or out. And the way you access that is if you spin this around, you'll see this rubber plug, you pop out that rubber plug, put a screwdriver in there, and then you'll just turn this wheel in or out, whichever way you need it adjusted. Now, this is a free backing design and what the free backing design is, it'll let you reverse without the trail brakes being activated. And the way you can tell it's a free backing.

One of the shoes will always be a D shape. So that's telling you it's a free backing design. And basically the free backing design means that when you begin backing up, the brake shoes will be firm against the drum is in the braking situation. And then as you continue in reverse, however, these shoes are gonna turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you're able to back up freely. The hydraulic pressure is contained by the wheel cylinder right here. Now this is specifically designed for use with surge tide trailer brake actuators. If you look at the backing plate on this, has a nice black paint finish on it. The wheel size that'll work on this is 16 inches or larger. And the mounting, the brake mounting flange bolt pattern, you can see the four holes right here. The pattern, the bolt pattern measurement on this is gonna be measured when you measure from the center of one hole directly across to the center of the other hole. On this one, it'll measure 4.8 inches. So that'll tell you this is a four lug 4.8 inch bolt pattern. Now the mounting bolts to install this to your brake flange, they are not included. We do sell those separately. The center pilot hole right here, dimmer on that is 3.9 inches. And as we mentioned, this is for an axle that's rated up to 8,000 pounds.
