Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

Note: Axle does not come fully assembled.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Axle Kits with Electric Brakes to Replace Mobile Home Axles
We do carry replacement magnets and other parts for electric drum brakes, including some older designs. I linked the replacement magnets we carry for 12 x 2 brakes, parts # BP01-225 and # BP01-180. However, mobile home axles are not intended for continuous use on a trailer. Mobile home axles are manufactured to be strong enough only for one use to transport the dwelling to its destination - just that one time. Mobile home axles are not safe for ongoing use on a trailer. But we do offer...

  • Dexter Suspension Kit For Tandem Trailers With Equalizers Measuring 7-3/4, 6, or 5-3/4
The Dexter suspension kits are high quality and include "wet bolts", bronze bushings instead of nylon and thick shackles. Properly maintained these would likely outlast typical factory kits three times over! To determine which kit is right for you simply measure the distance across the equalizer and use item # K71-449-00 for 7-3/4" long, item # K71-448-00 for 6" long, or item # K71-359-00 for 5-3/4" long. I have included a picture of the 7-3/4" equalizer showing where to measure. If...

  • Troubleshooting Weak Brakes on Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes
To be honest the brakes that were on your Lippert 5.2K axles were probably from Dexter Axle as they are the most common brakes on any trailer. Since your OEM brake controller on your Ram pickup worked with the old brakes it isn't likely that all of the sudden it wasn't compatible, especially since the brakes on the Dexter Axle # 8327830-EB are just standard eletric brakes and it isn't an electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) system. You said that you checked the brake adjustments, but I really...

  • Replacement Bearings 2788 and 1779
Bearing # 2788 has an inner diameter of 1.50-inches and fits race # 2729. Bearing # 1779 has an inner diameter of 0.938-inches and fits race # 1729. We do offer all of these bearing and race parts and if you wish you can install new bearings in your current hubs. The idler hub you referenced, part # AKIHUB-655-6-K, uses different bearings that have different dimensions. The bearings in this hub are inner bearing # 25580 (1.75-inch inner diameter) and outer bearing # 15123 (1.25-inch inner...

  • Can 3500lb Axle Be Modified To Have A 6000lb Axle Rating?
I have a different option for you, but changing the axle tube diameter will not increase the axle capacity as the new weakest link would be the spindles which would still have a 3500lb capacity. You could start from scratch and use two of the #42 E-Z Lube Spindle w/ Flange for 5.2K to 7K Trailer Axles # TRU37FR which have a combined 7000lb weight capacity, and would allow you to use 5200-6000lb Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K which has the 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern, and Electric...

  • Replacement for Mobile Home Axle on Hudson Flat Bed Trailer
We do have some off-the shelf axles that exactly match the hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center distances you mentioned. We offer 3 different capacities: For a 3500 lb axle, use # T3584F-EZ-8974. For a compatible idler hub (no brakes) use # 84545UC1-EZ for a hub/brake drum, use # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K. the idler hub and the hub/drum have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern, which is common for a 3500 lb axle. For compatible brake assemblies, use # AKEBRK-35R-SA for the right...

  • Does Dexter Trailer Axle W/ Electric Brakes # 8327830-EB Come W/ Bearings Pre-Greased?
The Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes - E-Z Lube - 6 on 5-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 89" - 6,000 lbs # 8327830-EB you were looking at does not come pre-greased so you will need to pack the bearings with the included marine grade grease. That is pretty easy on this axle as it has the E-Z Lube spindle with a zerk fitting so you can add grease without having to take the spindle apart. I do still recommend adding some grease to the spindle and bearings before installing, then topping it off through...

  • Replacement Axle Needed for Dexter Axle Mobile Home Axle
Thank you for all of the good info! Since mobile home axles are just meant to be used once we want to focus on weight capacity and fit with your trailer frame to make sure we get something that is a good replacement. I'm guessing that when you measures the 75-1/2" width of your trailer frame that you were measuring outside to outside so the 6K Dexter Trailer Axle w/ Electric Brakes # 8327830-EB with the 74" spring-center and 89" hub-face measurements should do the trick. • Which Axle to Add to a Trailer with Two Axles and Dexter 8-201-9 Hubs
It looks like the numbers you gave me are for a Dexter 6K axle. If you want to add another axle, then we have three options depending on the length of your current axles. If your axles measure 86-1/2" from hub face to hub face, then part # 8327826-EB is the new axle for you. If they measure 89", then use part # 8327830-EB. If they measure 95", then use part # 7461121-EB. Each of these axles are 6K Dexter EZ-Lube axles with 6 on 5-1/2" bolt patterns. The only difference is the length....
