Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs set. This is gonna help improve your driver control and comfort by upgrading the rear suspension on your 2016 and newer Nissan Frontier or Toyota Tacoma. This is going to replace your factory bump stops. It's gonna help to absorb bumps and shocks and minimize your sway to help keep your vehicle level as you're towing or hauling a heavy load. Now, most people are familiar when you're talking about suspension enhancement, they think of airbags and obviously these are not airbags, so there's gonna be some benefits and some drawbacks when you compare the two, but one major difference is that these are going to be very minimal maintenance, really no maintenance at all.
So, with your airbags, you're gonna have to add air. If you have a heavier load, let air out, so it's not too firm if you have a light load. Now, these are going to be constructed of a durable microcellular urethane. So, you're not gonna have to worry about airing them up or letting the air out. They work on a progressive load control design, so the springs compress according to the weight of your cargo.
So, for your lighter loads, the springs will compress easily to give you a nice soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. For your heavier loads, the springs are gonna compress by as much as 80% to support your load. These will have a weight capacity of 1,800 pounds. Keep in mind, that's not gonna increase your vehicle's weight carrying capacity. It's very tempting to think that that 1,800 pounds means that you're gonna be able to carry 1,800 pounds more in your truck, but think of it less like a second set of hands that's helping you lift more weight.
Think of it more like a back brace. So, it's there to help support your suspension system, take some of that strain off of it so it can last longer. Now, another major benefit to these is that it's gonna be very simple to get them installed. Basically, just fit right in place of your original bump stops. They do include instructions to walk you through that process step-by-step.
They also include a couple of different sizes of spacer here and the hardware that you'll need to accommodate those spacers to make sure that you have the proper spacing for your vehicle and these are custom fit brackets. So, again, you're not gonna have to do any drilling or anything like that. So, it's gonna be a very simple installation, as opposed to your airbags that will require you to run airlines and different things. So, it's much more involved installation, where this is gonna be very simple for you. Now, the one downside to these over your airbags is that they really are just kind of a set it and forget it sort of set up. So, you're not gonna have much control over how much support you're getting. So, with your airbags, if you want more support you can add air in, get a little bit more. These are just going to be what they are. So, you're not gonna be able to control them very much, but they are independent from each other. So, that's gonna help with your side-to-side movement. It's gonna help reduce your body roll and sway as you're taking turns and that sort of thing. So, they are gonna do a really good job for you without giving you that, whether you want to consider it a headache or a benefit of having to add air and take air out. These do have minimal lateral expansion, so they are going to compress vertically instead of off to the side. So, it's gonna help prevent any damage when you're operating in tight spaces. So, overall, really great option here to just kind of, again, improve your driver control and comfort. These are made here in the USA, so you can trust they are gonna be good quality and they also come with a limited lifetime warranty. Here’s my true thoughts of the blue sumo spring. Here’s the pro’s for me! Shipped and received the very next day, I got rid of the air bags that never held air. The sumo install was extremely quick. Hooked up to my food trailer and truck only went down about an inch and a quarter, much better than before! Sits about 1” off the axle so I still get a good ride, and loaded with a trailer… it still actually rode good. I’m tickled with them. Now.. the con and only con… I personally think $[XX] for two pieces of urethane and four brackets and two bolts is a horrible rip off!!! But…. LOL.. I’d buy them again!
Very easy installation. The improvement in handling is phenomenal.
2024 Z71 Silverado towing a travel trailer. Prior to these springs, the truck would bounce and sag. With the SumoSprings, truck is stable and sags less. Unloaded truck drives like factory. Easy install on my own.
The Sumo helper springs were not difficult to install (had to jack up the rear a few inches) & I really do think they have helped with steadiness in towing our camper.

I have had these on my 2006 Colorado for a year, great product easy install I haul a compact tractor with bucket and tiller on a single axle trailer and the truck doesn't sag. No adverse ride quality when carrying no load definitely better than installing air shocks. Highly recommend to anyone having issues with vehicle sagging when loaded.

I’ve owned these SumoSprings for a year now and love them! I installed them on a 2016 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Outdoorsman 4x4. I tow a 7x14 aluminum cargo trailer that probably weighs 4000lbs loaded with gear. Before installing the SumoSprings my axles would almost touch my OEM bump stops and truck would sag. With SumoSprings my truck rides more evenly and is surprisingly smooth on the road. The ride quality is definitely better with SumoSprings. Less body roll in corners and an overall more confident ride. When I’m not towing I don’t even know they’re there. Awesome product!
Really solid for the money. Obviously if you plan to haul a load regularly you should upgrade springs or run bags, but these were a great temporary measure for hauling my bikes out west and back in my frontier. Easy to install and do the job well; particularly noticed the difference on rough dirt roads where in the past I would have been banging on the bump stops.
The Sumo Springs worked great in my 2022 Nissan Frontier and stopped the rear from sagging under trailer load but rode like normal unloaded. Very good product and very easy to install.
This only pertains to the order, shipping speed, and install as I have not put a heavy load on these sumo Springs yet but I feel like that's a foregone conclusion based off the reviews already. The ordering process, the shipping, and the installation was unbelievably easy. I kept rereading the instructions thinking this can't be right because it was so simple. I looked at the YouTube video and realized it is that simple! So happy with the ordering process, the quality of the initial product I opened, and how simple it was to put on the jeep.
I was surprised at how much of a difference these actually make. I bought them based on some videos of others using them, but wasn't sure if they would actually make much difference in my situation. I tow a 6800lb trailer with a Silverado 1500. With the tongue weight of that trailer, the rear of the truck doesn't drop all that much and I wasn't sure if replacing the bump stops was even necessary, but when I'm on roads with "heaves" and especially bridges where porpoising can be a problem, these SumoSpring certainly help. You probably won't notice some huge drastic change, but it's just enough to matter and even out the ride to a noticeable degree. Also, they're pretty easy to install (and I'm only barely handy when it comes to this stuff.)
I've never put on a easier product. I put the jack under the trailer hitch mount. Just lifted the body 1-2 inches and used a 12 mm socket . The socket removed the old ones and I hand tightened the new on. Literally took 10 minutes and a beer.
Great product! Bought these for my 2000 7.3 f250. Didn't want something that is constantly active like ras or hellwig since my leaf springs are new and rated for 4k pounds. Installed these in 1 hr super simple only hard part was the factory bump stop on driver side was a pain. Didn't install the puck they give due to height of truck and I knew more or less at what point I wanted them engaging. I haul cattle to shows/ auctions or between pastures with my 24ft big bend and these things actually provided a smoother ride in my truck loaded then unloaded.they do a great job with the added support and are better than an overload spring with handling sway and providing a smooth ride loaded. Just wish I could use the 3k pound rated ones on this truck and my dually but doesn't fit if you have a gooseneck sadly so will probably have to go with timbs on the drw. Over all great product can't speak to longevity but solid for the time being. And customer service with this company is excellent if you have a question or problem they're on top of it...hope they pay them as well as the reputation they're building for them.
I bought and installed the 1000lb Sumo Solo springs to help alleviate rear end squat on my 2024 GMC Canyon Denali when pulling my boat. My boat trailer has a long mono tongue with no weight distribution installed. The boat weighs in at about 5500lbs, the truck fender lip measures 38” high unloaded, once I dropped the hitch down on the ball and the Sumos picked up the load, the fenders measured 36.25” equating to an inch and 3/4 squat. Empty the Sumos have an apx gap of 7/8” above the frame rails. The Sumos were recommended over the Timbrens for my situation of infrequent towing with this truck and to maintain the best ride possible when not towing. So far my ride is virtually unchanged when empty and feels controlled when towing. Installation is straight forward but the instructions could be a little clearer with a diagram showing the intended location of the springs. Luckily an etrailer customer had already done the install and provided some pics so there was no question. I chose to remove the tires to have good access and I’d do it again this way. I supported the truck with a jack stand under the receiver. IMHO the proper method to locate the over frame upper clamp brackets is to push the forward clamp as far forward until it contacts the bed stiffener and you’ll be in the correct location then let all the hardware hang to position itself, tighten as required and enjoy.
Installed these right before a long road trip, and were impressed with how much the ride improved. Opted not to include the spacers, which has worked out fine. While not towing have not noticed any change to the ride, which is good. When towing the steering has a solid grip on the road now (sometimes felt a little loose before installing these) and no more issues with 'porpoising'. We drove across a several mile long bridge in the Bay Area that likely would have been a roller coaster ride previously, and had no issues. Quick and easy to install.
Put these on a Jeep Gladiator to haul a motorcycle to Sturgis. Kept everything level, good ride and stability. Highly recommend.
Product is great, exceeded my expectations. Install is simple and straightforward. It’s a night and day difference in both the body roll and the handling small bumps all the way up to off-road conditions.
I had installed this model SumoSpring on my 2019 4Runner and had great results when towing the camper I had at the time. They greatly reduce the bounce when going over dips in the road at highway speeds. Now I have a 2021 Titan and a bigger heavier camper. I expect the same great results on the Titan. Installation was pretty straight forward and took about a half hour. The size difference between the OEM bump stops and the SumoSprings alone should give a better ride when towing my camper.
Love them! The truck barely even squatted, had two dirt bikes, and a generator in the bed as well! It handles the bumps and sway great
Opted for the Blue 1000lb Sumo's w/spacer over the 1500lb Black ones. 1500 Silverado Max Tow & reduces squatting by 2" on a 1000lb+ tongue weight. Ride is still good, but you can feel the Sumo's engage over large dips or bumps which is not an issue for me.
I got the springs installed last week and wanted to have a drive time before I wrote the review.
The height of the springs are perfect for my 2016 Tacoma, They keep the truck stable and nearly eliminate the body roll I had before installing them. I am heading to the mountains in a couple weeks, so I will update the review when I get back. That way I will know for sure the body roll is gone and the truck is stable on the winding mountain roads.
The springs installed in no time at all and since I had the rear end apart, I decided to add the leveling blocks at the same time, to keep the truck from squatting with the gear I haul around with me.
The guys at etrailer are great. And while I did not call them to discuss this item, they have been very helpful in the past with all my questions.

These Sumo Springs were a great addition to my Tacoma and well worth the money, IMHO.
2025 Promaster 2500 159” wheelbase. Backed the van on couple 2” X 6 “ easier sliding under. Sprayed PB Blaster on top of bumper spring, using a 16” Channel Lock, easy off with the old. At that time I jacked the rear end to allow clearance. One side at a time. Took longer for set up then the job. I used the long bolt with two spacers. Have not drove yet, though looking for great results.
I put these on a 2013 Jeep JK (not lifted) that tows a 3000 lb trailer in rough terrain; Total game changer.
These replaced the anemic factory stops (which had completely disintegrated) and make it impossible to 'bottom out' on the dips and holes that use to beat up the suspension. I got nearly all of my vertical travel back and the vehicle now sits almost level under high tongue load.
They go on pretty easy. I suggest sliding in one side, and then using a wooden dowel and hammer to pop the other side in the stock receiver cup.
Highly recommended. These are a MUST if you are towing a trailer (with a medium sized SUV) of any significant weight or if you just want to be able to bounce hard without bottoming out your suspension. I am likely going to get the front suspension version now as well.
Wish I knew these existed sooner.
