Whereas belt-driven fans use up power from the engine to turn, electric fans do not, thus removing any unnecessary load and increasing both fuel economy and horsepower. In addition, you do not have to worry about an electric fan's slowing down at low RPM, as many belt-driven fans do, so you are guaranteed sufficient airflow regardless of the vehicle speed.

While this assembly is intended for primary cooling and should, therefore, provide enough CFM to replace your vehicle's factory fan, you will still need to determine the CFM requirements for your engine before making your purchase. And remember, engines that have been modified or vehicles often used for towing may require additional CFM. There is no limit to the number of fans you can install, as long they all fit appropriately and are mounted on the same side of your radiator so that they do not cancel each other out.

Two types of turn-on sources are available for this fan. The Derale Lighted On/Off Switch for Electric Fans (D16740) allows for manual control of your fan so that you can choose when to turn it on and off. Thermostatic controls, on the other hand, send a signal to the fan, directing it to shut off when fluid temperatures reach an appropriate level, thus saving power. Once the temperature climbs again and additional cooling is needed, the fan is automatically turned back on. Thermostat switches can be single-stage with pre-set temperatures - D16735, D16738, D16739, D16720 and D16721 - or adjustable - D16778 and D16779.

I bought this electric fan for my 65 mustang 289cd, trying to keep engine cool, but after taking awhile to install the electric fan did not do what I thought it would do. Engine temp. went to high almust to 240degrees. Tried to make work changed by changing thermostats, but nothing kept temp. done.
Changed back to oringal fan, temp came down. But the electric fan in garage. Fan work fine, but did not cool my engine.

I put two of these in front of the radiator in my suburban. They were great at keeping the engine much cooler especially while I am towing or sitting in traffic. They were easy to install and connect. I connected them together with 3 relays to switch them between either series or parallel connection, depending on what power output I wanted. In series, they would run at half speed whenever the air conditioning compressor was running, which worked great for keeping airflow over the air conditioning condenser and the engine cool while idling in the hot sun. I added a radiator temperature probe to the radiator and the oil, so when either got to 180° it would switch to parallel mode and run the fans at high-speed. The reason for not running I'm in high-speed all the time was for two reasons, first because they are two fans are a little loud if the vehicle is not moving, second the power draw of the two fans was a little too much for an idling engine, especially with a trailer plugged in drawing power also.

by:

Used in my 51 F1. It is thicker than most so make sure you have the room for it.
It works good and seems to be built very well.

by:

This is the thinest high flow fan i could find on the market, and it's a perfect fit on an FJ40 radiator! The installation was very simple and was complete in 20min.

by:

Outstanding installation ease

See what our Experts say about this Derale Radiator Fans

  • Derale 32" High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan # D16934 Slows Idle on 2001 Chevy Express Van
The sudden draw of 50 amps when fan # D16934 turns on will cause that momentary decline that you are experiencing. The higher the RPMs of the motor the less it will affect anything. You can certainly go to a higher capacity alternator but it is not 100 percent necessary provided the draw of the fan is not overdrawing the electrical system.

  • Recommendation for Cooling the Coolant and Transmission Fluid Temperature on a 2008 Chevy Avalanche
For the radiator coolant temperature, I recommend adding a supplemental fan or fans depending on how much space you have under the hood. There is no limit to the amount of fans you can have. A pusher fan, mounted in front of the radiator pushing air through it, would be the most efficient (provided that the factory fan is mounted on the same side and pushes air through in the same direction). A puller fan would be used on the other side of the radiator to pull air through. The largest electric...

The Derale 32 inch High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan-and-Shroud Assembly - 4,000 CFM, item # D16934, is designed as a universal application and will mount behind the radiator on your 1985 Ford with 6.9 Liter diesel engine. You will need to measure to be sure there is room to mount the assembly behind the radiator. I have listed the dimensions below. Width - 31-3/8 inches Height - 15-3/4 inches Overall Depth - 3-1/4 inches Mounting Holes - 12-7/8 inches Top to Bottom Mounting holes -...

    The # D16928, # D16925 and the # D16934 you mentioned are 12" fans, but the # D16926 is a 13" fan.

  • Thermostat and Probe for a High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan-and-Shroud Assembly, # D16934
Because the High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan-and-Shroud Assembly, # D16934, contains two fans that operate independent of one another, you will need two Adjustable Fan-Control Thermostats with Thread-In Probes, # D16749. The wiring that comes with the thermostat is required and each fan will need a complete D16749 to make them operable. The only extra wiring that might be needed is if the mounting locations for the thermostat and/or probe are too far away. In that case, extra wiring...

  • How to Determine if Derale 32" High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan-and-Shroud Assembly Will Work
Even though the engine components we carry are meant to be a supplement to the OEM components we have heard of people using them as replacements for OEM products. If you want to try using the Derale 32" High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan-and-Shroud Assembly # D16934 as a replacement then you need to make sure the 4,000 CFM (cubic feet per minute) is a high enough rating and that the overall dimensions of this product will fit your aplpication. I have attached a diagram showing the dimensions...

  • What Powers Derale Electric Radiator Fan and Shroud
The alternator and 12 volt power system of the vehicle is what provides the power for the Derale Fan and Shroud Assembly part # D16934. That said, these do not put any additional strain or load on the alternator as it's already turning and providing power for the battery. This is how it frees up power over a manual fan.

  • How Much Cubic Feet Per Minute is Needed in an Electric Fan for a 2000 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Typically, a small block V8 engine would need 2,200 to 3,000 CFM. A big block V8 would need 3,400 to 4,500 CFM. I recommend going with the highest CFM in a fan that will fit in the available space on your Ford F-250. The fan that you have referenced, # D16934, would be plenty of air flow. This fan is designed as a puller only, and gets mounted behind the radiator to pull air through. You would need to have a space 31-3/8 inches wide, 15-3/4 inches tall, and 3-1/4 inches deep behind the...

  • How to Determine the Best Electric Radiator Fan for a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5.7 Liter
The electric fans we carry are not vehicle specific. You have to determine how much space is available in the area you want to install a fan or fans. The 4000 cubic feet per minute fans we carry, see link to the right, are the highest output we have available. Depth is probably going to be the biggest concern. Electric fans # D16934 are the thinnest overall at 3-1/4 inches deep. The next step down in terms of air flow is # D16834 at 2700 cubic feet per minute. But it is also only 1-3/4...

  • Electric Fan with Shroud Availability for Chevy Truck with 454 Big Block
The typical CFM requirement for a big block vehicle like your 454 truck for a fan is 3,500 to 4,500 lbs. The part # D16934 can pull 4,000 CFM so it would fall within the range required. This is the highest rated electric fan system we offer so it would be the best option we have. As long as the dimensions of it match the available room you have and the radiator this would be a great option. This fan setup measures 31-3/8" Wide x 15-3/4" tall x 3-1/4" deep. Since you have 3-1/2 inches...

  • Is there a Direct Fit Electric Fan Kit for a 1987 Chevrolet Pickup
Direct fit kits are not typically available when swapping from mechanical to electric fans. The best thing to do is measure the backside of your radiator and figure out how much space you have. The kit you were looking at has an overall dimension of 31-3/8 inches wide, 15-3/4 inches tall, and 3-1/4 inches deep. Provided you have enough room for this assembly to fit, it should be able to be installed with no problem. Since you want a fan kit with that is controlled via a thermostatic switch...
