Whereas belt-driven fans use up power from the engine to turn, electric fans do not, thus removing any unnecessary load and increasing both fuel economy and horsepower. In addition, you do not have to worry about an electric fan's slowing down at low RPM, as many belt-driven fans do, so you are guaranteed sufficient airflow regardless of the vehicle speed.

Before purchasing an electric fan, be sure to determine the CFM (cubic feet per minute) requirements for your engine. And remember, engines that have been modified or vehicles often used for towing may require additional CFM. There is no limit to the number of fans you can install, as long they all fit appropriately and are mounted on the same side of your radiator so that they do not cancel each other out.

Two types of turn-on sources are available for this fan. The Derale Lighted On/Off Switch for Electric Fans (D16740) allows for manual control of your fan so that you can choose when to turn it on and off. Thermostatic controls, on the other hand, send a signal to the fan, directing it to shut off when fluid temperatures reach an appropriate level, thus saving power. Once the temperature climbs again and additional cooling is needed, the fan is automatically turned back on. Thermostat switches can be single-stage with pre-set temperatures - D16735, D16738, D16739, D16720 and D16721 - or adjustable - D16778 and D16779.

This fan does not include a thermostat system. It can be wired into the original electrical system and will then operate according to the thermostat system in the vehicle. It can also be wired to an on/off switch but that is usually only done if off-road and race applications. We have plenty of thermostat options, sold separately, for determining the temperature at which the fan kicks on. For example, part D16735 kicks on at 180 degrees and shuts off at 165 degrees. Part D16759 is an adjustable thermostat system. Turn-on temperate can be set any where between 150 and 240 degrees. The turn-off temperature will always be 10 degrees less than the turn-on temperature.

This fan is for a project that will not be completed until the middle of 2014 or later. I plan to use it to increase the air flow through the air conditioner condenser in my 1969 Corvair convertible. I will be ordering another fan since my design requires two fans for greatest efficiency and the flow rate for these fans is on the low side. The 500 cfm fans comes with too many items that are useless for my application thereby being too expensive.

  • Electric Fan Recommendation for a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 liter V6
A 2,100 CFM fan should be plenty to cool the radiator of your 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 liter V6. A fan like the part # D16626 should work well. This is a 16 inch fan that can pull 2,175 CFM only requires 18.4 amps. I attached a help article on electric fans for you to check out as well.

  • Using Derale Electric Fan Part # D16908 for Remotely Mounted Transmission Cooler
At 450 CFM (cubic feet per minute) the Straight Blade Electric Fan you mentioned, part # D16908, would provide plenty of airflow for the D13503 Transmission cooler. This has been confirmed with Derale, the manufacturer. If you need a thermostat control for the fan, use part # D16769.

  • Recommendation of Electric Fan for 1988 Ford Ranger With 2.9L Engine
When choosing an electric fan for your vehicle you will want to make sure to get a fan that will give you the correct Cubic Feet per Minute (CFM) for the size of your engine. The CFM is how much air is being moved through your radiator in one minute. The typical CFM requirement for a 6 cylinder engine is 1,600 to 2,000. If your 1995 Ford Ranger is used for towing you will want additional airflow. It is always recommended to go with the highest rated fan. I am including a link to a FAQ...

  • Do Electric Radiator Fans Have to be Mounted Directly Against the Radiator, 1982 Chevy Monte Carlo
For the best performance, a radiator fan like Derale 12 Inch High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan, # D16925, should be mounted directly against the radiator. If there is a gap, less airflow will go through the radiator and it will not be as efficient. If you do not want to use the included mounting straps, I would find another way to mount it directly against the radiator for ideal performance. I have included a link to our FAQ article on electric fans for reference.

  • Recommended Derale Transmission Cooler Fan for 2008 Chevrolet Silverado
Transmission fluid cannot really be over-cooled but you can make things easier by using a fan such as the Derale # D16308 that includes a power switch and adjustable thermostat. This will save you the effort of switching it on and off and provides consistent cooling regardless of engine speed. You'll want to confirm you have enough space for mounting the fan assembly. Please refer to the measured drawing I have included for you which has dimensions noted. The Derale # D16308 can be mounted...

  • Electric Radiator Fan for a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder
The type of electric fan you use in your 1995 Nissan Pathfinder is going to depend on how much space is available under the hood. There are fans as small as 4 inches diameter and 2-3/8 inches deep and as large as 32 inches and 3-1/4 inches deep. There is likely more space in front of the radiator than behind it. A fan such as # D18217 is 17 inches in diameter and 2-5/8 inches deep. You would need to measure the available space to determine if this fan will fit or if you need to go smaller...

  • Recommendations for an Electric Radiator Fan for a 1984 Datsun 720 2.4L V6
In regards to fans, it is not the size that matters it is the airflow. Electric fans are not necessarily vehicle specific. If you have # D16908 that you have referenced, it puts out 450 cubic feet of air per minute. This is not very much and a fan that can generate more would be needed. Typically, a 6 cylinder motor requires 1,600 to 2,000 cubic feet per minute. The fans that you could use largely depends on the space you have in the engine compartment to mount them. I recommend getting...

  • Is Derale Radiator Fan # D16908 a Pusher or Puller and Can it be Used on a Motorcycle
The Derale Radiator Fan, # D16908, can be used as a pusher or a puller fan, depending on where it is mounted. The motor is reversible. You could use it on a motorcycle, provided that it fits in the space you have available on the bike. The dimensions of the fan are 8-1/8 inches wide x 8 inches tall x 2-1/4 inches deep. You will also need to make sure the bike has an electrical system capable of supporting the 5.3 amp power draw of the fan. I have included a couple of FAQ articles below...

  • Derale Dyno-Cool Fan and Thermostat Recommendation for a Honda Generator Box Air Changer
I spoke with my contact at Derale and he informed me that the probe from the Derale Adjustable Fan-Control # D16769 can register air and water temperature. You should have no problem using a Derale 8 inch Dyno-Cool Straight-Blade Electric Fan # D16908 fan with a # D16769 to move the air in your generator box. We do not have both of them in a package, but you can order them separately and they will perform together well.
