Features to Know About

Sets Up at Ground Level

 Campground view of tent

You're not climbing a ladder half-asleep at 3 a.m. You're not lifting a rooftop tent into place. The Outset mounts to your hitch and sets up at ground level. Just unlock it, drop the legs, and snap the frame into place. Then unfold the tent and it opens with you, taking shape as you go. Once it's up, you hook the straps to secure it. Now all you have to do is step in and sleep.

Sleep Like You Mean It

People in tent

This isn't a pad on the ground or a leaky air mattress. You get a real 2-3/4" thick mattress with a removable cover, lifted off the dirt and rocks. The dark interior blocks early morning light so you can actually sleep in. And with full mesh doors, side windows, and a skylight, there's airflow without giving up privacy.

Your Stuff Stays Organized.

Interior of tent with storage

Inside, you'll find 4 mesh pockets near the head of the tent, 2 for shoes and 2 for smaller stuff like your phone, flashlight, or toothbrush. Up top, 2 large stash pockets hold clothes or extra blankets. Everything has its place.

You Go. It Stays.

 Tent unhooked from vehicle

En route to camp and need something from the back? Tilt the tent away with the foot pedal, open the trunk, and grab what you need. And when you want to head out again for groceries, a trailhead, or a quick drive into town, you don't have to tear anything down. Just unhook the tent from your hitch and leave it standing. When you return, hook it back up or not, that's up to you. Pick up right where you left off.

Use Your Roof, Store It When You're Done

Person rolling tent

No rooftop tent means your roof is open. Load up bikes, a cargo box, or a kayak, depending on the trip. And when you're home, unhook it and roll the tent into the garage. Built-in wheels make it easy to store without asking for help.

  • What Purpose Does The Thule Outset Towbar Mounted Tent Serve?
Hey Melissa, the Thule Outset Towbar Mounted Tent - 3 Person # TH34FR39XB hits a sweet spot for road trippers, weekend campers, and travelers who want fast, easy camp setup without committing to a rooftop rig. It's nice that it doesn't sit on the ground, and it is easy to setup and use since it's not on the roof. It’s especially good for: Families who don’t want kids climbing ladders Folks with SUVs or crossovers who want their cargo space free Solo travelers who want no-fuss setup and...

  • Can Gear Be Stored In Thule Outset Tent During Travel?
Hey Tamika! The Thule Outset # TH34FR39XB is primarily a tent, so you won’t want to use it as a cargo carrier during travel. There’s no internal tie-down system or lockable compartments, and because it deploys by swinging out and unfolding, loose gear inside could damage the fabric or make it difficult to set up. We’ve seen folks store soft sleeping bags, pads, or camp blankets inside if they’re snug and secure, but no hard gear or loose tools, especially while driving. Hope that helps!...

  • Can Thule Outset Hold Up To Wind And Rain And Snow Conditions In Colorado?
Great question, Logan! The Thule Outset Hitch-Mounted Tent # TH34FR39XB has a waterproof PVC-coated polyester shell and aluminum frame, so it's built to take on the elements. The floor is durable and insulated so you’re not sleeping directly on cold ground, and the aluminum poles are pretty stout for high-wind conditions. What's really neat is that Thule tests their products to the limit, including this one, in their Thule Test Center. As you can see in the attached image, they put it...

  • Does The Mattress Stay Inside Or Get Removed When Folding Up Thule Outset Tent?
Hi Dwayne! The built-in mattress stays inside the Outset # TH34FR39XB even when folded; that’s one of the perks! It’s a self-contained system, so you don’t have to pull it out and store it separately. The mattress is made of high-density foam and folds up with the tent structure. It stays clean and dry thanks to the sealed outer shell. We do recommend letting it dry out if it’s damp before packing away since moisture trapped inside can cause mildew like with any tent. Where do you like...

  • Can Thule Outset Hitch Tent Be Used On 2" Hitch Of 2021 Subaru Outback?
Hi Jerry from Flagstaff! Yes, the Thule Outset Hitch-Mounted Tent # TH34FR39XB will work great with your Outback as long as your 2" hitch has a tongue weight rating of at least 165 lbs. The tent itself weighs around 140 lbs, and while it doesn’t carry the weight of people while driving, the hitch needs to be strong enough to support the tent when mounted. We recommend checking your hitch's sticker and your owner’s manual for tongue weight rating. According to the online manual of your...

  • How Does The Thule Outset TowBar Tent Compare To Roof Tents?
Great question, Brandi! We just recently started carrying the Thule Outset Towbar Mounted Tent # TH34FR39XB and it's a really neat new item! We have never carried anything like it before. Now for your question, the biggest differences come down to comfort, accessibility, and flexibility: Setup height: The Outset stays at ground level, so no climbing ladders or hauling gear overhead. Vehicle freedom: Once you set it up, your vehicle is free to drive away. This is a huge perk if you're exploring...

  • Can the Thule Outset Hitch Mounted Tent Handle the Highway Speeds on My RAV4?
Hello Eugene, You’ll have no problem towing the Thule Outset at highway speeds # TH34FR39XB, it’s built for real-world travel. Once it’s folded up for transport, the tent is completely secure and stable, and Thule rates it for normal highway driving (up to about 80 mph). Just take it easy over big bumps and make sure your hitch and tongue weight can comfortably handle the ~163 lb of the tent. Once it’s locked in, it rides solid and tracks beautifully behind a RAV4. And honestly, the tent...

  • Can I Tow A Trailer When Transporting The Thule Outset Hitch-Mounted Tent?
Hey Kevin! The Outset # TH34FR39XB actually uses your entire 2inch hitch receiver, and because it’s deployed as a tent and not towed like a normal trailer, you won’t be able to tow anything else while it’s in use. There’s no pass-through hitch or secondary receiver on the tent base. If you're planning to bring other gear like a kayak or bikes, we’d recommend roof racks or bed racks on your vehicle. You could also tow a small trailer separately and unhitch when you set up camp.

  • Is Thule Outset Hitch Tent Easy To Set Up Alone Without A Second Person?
Hi Alana, yes! One of the standout features of the Outset # TH34FR39XB is how manageable it is for solo travelers. We had Courtney from Oregon set it up solo on her 19 Tacoma and she had it unhitched and set up in under 10 minutes. It comes with large handles and built-in wheels to make rolling it off the vehicle super intuitive, and then you simply fold and deploy the structure like a tent. There is a learning curve the first time, but it gets much easier after that. Bonus: no climbing...
