Video Transcript for Review of the Fastway Universal Coupler Lock for 1-7/8", 2" and 2-5/16" Couplers

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Fastway Universal Coupler Lock. The universal design is going to protect most trailers from being towed away, so it'd designed to provide maximum security for your unattended trailer. That's going to protect it from theft. It's going to use a multi-step uniball that fits into any size ball coupler. This piece is a solid construction. It's not hollow like similar designs and models, and the shackle has a nice, unique bend.

This is a reversible design that allows it to snug up tight to most type of couplers or coupler latches, including all the ones that you see here on the table, such as a-frame, straight channel, round tongue, flat plate and surge type couplers. It's also going to accommodate a variety of latching mechanisms such as trigger, pin, thumb and wrap-around yoke latches. It works great on all the ones that you see here on the table. Really nice universal design that's going to provide maximum security to your unattended trailer. The unit features a tube key-lock cylinder that provides better security than standard key mechanisms. It's a lot harder to pick and it's more difficult to duplicate keys.

It's also going to feature an anti-drill pin that discourages attempts to drill out the lock. The unit's also going to feature bolt blocked locking system to prevent thieves from prying the lock open. Inside this hole right there, there's going to be a small bolt that engages the shackle. Right now it would be in the unlocked position, and you can see how that comes out just a little bit. It doesn't take much to secure the unit.

That bolt that runs through engages the grooves on the shackle to keep it from being pried off of the trailer coupler. When it comes to the construction, we're looking at a hardened steel construction. When it comes to the shackle, it's going to provide maximum cut resistance. The chrome-plated finish does a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. We're looking at a solid, dye-cast corrosion-resistant housing that's very strong and very durable. Two keys are included per lock.

They are numbered, so the keys are going to be unique to the universal lock that you choose. This is going to fit 1-7/8", 2" and 2-5/16" ball couplers. You just need to make sure that the coupler width does not exceed 4-1/2". The shackle diameter is 5/8" and the unit's going to be covered with a limited lifetime warranty. I just want to show you how it installs and how easy it is to use. What you'll need to do is separate the two components, so just move it to the unlocked position. It also has a nice dust cap that protects that lock opening. It's going to do a great job at keeping out dirt and moisture. When you're ready to use it, all you need to do is make sure that the coupler is in the open position. The ball portion goes in there. All you've got to do is secure it just as if you're hooking up to your hitch ball, and then install the shackle. You need to determine which way is going to work best for your application. For this one, I just want to make sure that the point is pointing back towards the trailer. It is a universal design, that way you can adjust it however you to use the lock to fit your application the best. We just move it to an unlocked position. Allow that shackle to go down as far as possible. Move the key to the locked position and it removes from the core. Place over the dust cap, and that's on there, it's not going to come off. The only way to get it off is to use one of the two keys to unlock the unit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Fastway Universal Coupler Lock.

I’ve got several of these locks, and I bought them all to use the same key number. I had trailers stolen twice before I found these. The third time I had video of the thief and he could do anything with this lock except look at it. He gave up and left.

good product. Been using these for years. We have 12 bumper pull style trailers and use these tongue locks when they are on job sites. It's nice from e trailer because we can get the locks keyed the same. It was miserable having a bunch of different keys.

The ball lock I purchased from etrailer.com is the perfect tool for the job. It has several locking positions for different height tongue assemblies and one which was perfect for mine. The lock is smaller than the one I replaced, rendering it much less obtrusive. The chrome coloring also helps it blend better with the hitch, so if you use it while camping your trailer has a “friendlier” appearance to fellow campers. I really like the fact it came with 4 keys and case hardening makes it even safer and lighter than my old lock. Best of all, however, was the superb customer service I received from etrailer.com. Before, during, and yes, even after I received my lock they followed up to make sure I was happy. 5 star service. Would definitely recommend them to my trailering friends.

What an unexpected pleasure to open my e-mail and find a follow up message from you a year after I purchased from you.I hope things are going well for both you and etrailer.com. Even though I have not had the need to purchase any additional parts for my trailer in the intervening year, I continue to recommend your company to those of my friends who are still restoring their trailers. I hope many of them have used your company for their parts orders and are as happy as I have been with your stellar service and great products. Ive attached a few photos for you of my current set up. One shows the ball lock in place so if others wish to know what it would look like installed you may share it with them feel free to edit out my chickens, she says with a laugh. The PDF file is a copy of the front page of our local newspaper when my trailer made the Christmas day cover. And the last photo was taken in October at Lake Skinner just to prove that my baby is not a trailer queen we actually go camping on a quite regular basis we went out 8 times last year. Ok, having shared my baby pictures with you, I would also like to tell you a somewhat sad tale. I have a fellow Sister-On-The-Fly all female camping group, who 2 months ago had her trailer stolen...right out of her driveway at her home. She was devastated to say the least. She put this sad news out on the vintage e-mail websites and, fortunately for her, the vintage trailer community leapt into action and she began receiving steady e-mails about the progress of her stolen trailer from those who spotted it along the way. Enough e-mails in fact that the local law enforcement was able to follow them and was able to recover her trailer, amazingly enough. I ran into her at a recent trailer gathering and found out she did not have a ball lock on it when it was taken, and Ive made it part of my discussions with the ladies on our trips to mention the necessity of locking your trailer, both in your driveway and on trips we had another one taken, boldly during daylight, at a vintage rally!. I show them how the lock works and recommend they contact etrailer.com for one. They like mine because it is much less industrial looking and that matters to the ladies.Well to keep this from becoming a novel, I suppose I should sign off and let you get back to business, Patrick. Thank you again for checking in, that was truly amazing. Ill continue to recommend you and etrailer.com and when I next need parts and vintage trailers always do, be assured I will contact you first.Have a great day, and thank you for helping to keep my Aunt Bea safe and where she belongs.Best regards,Maggie

My trailer has a wide flange around the coupler and the stepped design of the bail fits perfectly. The circular keyway is secure and the casting is smooth. The teeth on both sides of the bail provide more secure latching than my one-sided prior lock. The main lock piece is smooth on the bottom preventing someone from hooking under the lock and just towing the trailer away. My prior lock had a lip that allowed the trailer to be moved with a tow hook.

My only complaint is that it came with two very sharp, very pointy metal pins sticking out of the bail, maybe to secure it in the package. I had to get a pair of pliers to remove these before they ripped my hands up.

I noted the same problem with the sharp clevis ? pins protruding from the bail. They do not seem to serve any purpose and there is no information in the instruction sheet that would indicate removal of the pins would somehow diminish the security of the lock. At first I assumed they prevented the shackle from being pushed too far into the lock but that was not the case. Mine are coming out and if it violates the warranty at least I wont have ripped my fingers and hands open.

@Dale That's awesome! It's great to hear these locks have done such a good job of keeping your trailers safe! Thank you for great review!

I bought several of these, keyed alike and have found them useful. The keyed alike feature is a winner. One key on every set of vehicle keys and I can access any of the rigs at will. The product itself can be a bit tricky to align, and on a steel hitch it will take some of the paint off eventually. Better than getting stolen I'd say. I've used it on 2 inch, 2&5/16 50mm and 1&7/8 couplers. The best fit is on the hitch I show a picture of, though in this case the lock is probably worth more than the trailer. . .
by:
Fits my trailer and ordered one with same key as the one on my other trailer which is very handy. I suppose, with enough effort, this lock could be defeated but it presents a good reason to just move on to an unprotected trailer.

Excellent product, fits the coupler on my Airstream trailer perfectly, very heavy strong secure lock.

Works perfectly!

Exactly what I was looking for to secure my horse trailer! Extremely sturdy. Easy on and off with the key of course! Super fast shipping. Great price.
by:
Works great. This is my second one. Keyed alike for both of my trailers.
by:
I like how it is built and how nicely it fits on the coupler
by:
Perfect fit for my older 1990's 26ft sailboat trailer - Solid lock - Easy to use - Nice addition to the "Tow Ready - Butterfly Lock" I also purchased from etrailer.com for the latch - Peace of mind is everything - 5 Stars on both locks
by:
I just purchased several items from etrailer. See photo for trailer lock and a new set of chains. I keep my trailer on the street and thought I had better start securing a little better. This hitch lock installed easily enough. I purchased three of them keyed alike for three different trailers, work trailer, camping trailer, and utility trailer. Super easy. This is my third purchase from etrailer over the years, and the customer support is out of this world. Actual people who call and email to follow up. etrailer sets the standard for what customer support should be.
by:
Great product & great service. We ordered this lock for our 2018 Jayco Jay Feather travel trailer. After buying and returning similar locks at our local camper and automotive stores that did not fit, we turned to the internet and found etrailer.com. The website made it easy to shop. It showed the dimensions for this lock. We knew it would fit when we received it. We are extremely satisfied with the service and product we received. Thanks, etrailer!
by:
Awesome product.
by:
I wish I could tell you more, I've only had this a week. It looks like a quality product and installed quickly and easily on our 1957 Pathfinder 16ft Travel Trailer. With this old hitch I did not know if it would work but it looks like it was designed especially for it.
by:
I ordered two of these locks keyed for both of my new trailers E TRAILER. ROCKS

great never had any problems with them

by:
I really like this product, I do wish it would get a little bit tighter not allowing so much wiggle room at the top above the coupler level. But, it seems to be solid and serves the intended purpose.
by:
Just what I was looking for! Perfect fit on our 27 ft 2021 Jayco travel trailer with 4.5 inch wide coupler.
by:
We use these for our company trailers. As well as some personal stuff. And we have several. I like that fact that you can select your key number. It's nice for a business to have all locks keyed the same. Much less confusion with the guys in the field.
by:
I have other brands of coupler lock, and they have basically a hitch ball that fits into the coupler. This one has more of a post that fits into the coupler which is why it does not fit securely in the coupler.
I will be returning this lock.
by:
Bought a key matched set to replace my cheap zinc Master tongue lock. These things are solid and give me confidence that my trailers will remain safe

They’ve been out in the extreme Midwest weather for about one year. They still look like new and perform flawlessly.

by:
Secure lock that fits over the trailer tongue flange. Always great quality and service from etrailer.
by:
I had a hard time finding a tongue lock to fit my Jayco with an underslung coupler, this fits perfectly.
