Video Transcript for Installing the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander

Hi, everyone, Jesse here with etrailer. Today we'll be taking a look at and I'll show you how to install the etrailer Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander. Adding a hitch to the Outlander is a great way to add some extra storage space onto the rear of your vehicle. With this hitch, you can throw in accessories such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier, or you can even do some light duty towing with it. Just remember, if you plan on doing any kind of towing with your vehicle, you will need to add on some trailer wiring, which I prefer the CURT kit that plugs right into your tail harness. Here's a closer look at our hitch installed on our neighbor's vehicle.

As you can see, the cross tubes are completely hidden behind the fascia and even the receiver opening kind of sits back, so it's really a pretty stealthy look. But when you're looking at the receiver, you'll notice that nice matte black finish that matches up with this trim panel here, and that receiver opening is gonna be your standard two inch by two inch opening. Behind that is another standard 5/8 inch pinhole. The pin and clip not included with the hitch. However, we have many options available here at etrailer.

Also, any accessory that you add on will most likely come with one included, and we have a wire type safety cable loop, very easy to access with whatever style safety cable you have, for example, this large Clevis here or even an S style like this. A question we get asked a lot is, once the hitch is installed, will my hands-free lift gate assist still function properly And the answer with the Outlander matched up with the etrailer hitch is that it does. You just have to kick to either side of the receiver opening, but otherwise it works just as it did from the factory. I'll take some quick measurements. We'll start with ground clearance.

From the ground to the top of the inside of the collar is right at about 13 inches. Then from the center of our pinhole here to the edge of our bumper is gonna be six inches. You wanna keep that number in mind for any folding accessories that you want to add on to make sure they don't make contact with the vehicle. For the weight capacities with this hitch, we have a gross trailer weight of 3,500 pounds. That's the amount of weight that you can pull behind the vehicle, and a maximum tongue weight of 525 pounds.

That's the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. Always be sure to double check your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure that your vehicle can handle that weight safely. All in all, the etrailer hitch is a really great option for you if you're looking for a hitch for your Outlander. If you have any questions or concerns after watching this video, please feel free to reach out to us. We'd be happy to help you get pointed in the right direction. As for the installation with this hitch, it's honestly one of the easiest hitches you can do. It's just a matter of getting the weight of the hitch up and get some bolts started. If you're not looking to do it yourself, maybe you just don't have time to get it done before your next adventure, check out our dealer locator. You can find someone local to you that would be happy to help you get this installed. If you are looking to see how this gets put on, then follow along and I'll walk you through it. We'll start our installation by lowering our exhaust. So before you get to lowering it, you'll definitely want something to support it. So I'm using a cam strap. If you're working on the ground, you can just use a floor jack, just something that's able to hold it up, and we'll move on to our first hanger here. We can actually just remove these two 13-millimeter bolts (drill rattling) to lower that one down. (drill rattling) And then there's a matching one on the passenger side. (drill rattling) Now a little forward of those two, we have a rubber hanger here. I already sprayed it down with some soapy water just to help it slide, also helps to have a tool like this. If you don't have a exhaust hanger tool, then you can just use a pry bar and get it hopped off that way. We'll slide it outta place and we'll lower it down, and we can relax our cam strap a little bit to get it even. Before we lift the hitch up into place, it's a good idea to just check out your threads on the weld nuts that we're using. If it's really bad, you can come in with a wire brush and clean it out, and then once you do that, what I do is thread it in and out a few times. Just make sure it's nice and smooth. That way, we are not fighting those threads while we have the hitch above our head, but the holes that we're using are this one here and then there's two towards the back. The last one's kind of tucked up past this plastic panel there. And while we're here, I have the hardware in my hands, so we'll talk about it real quick. So each of those holes gets a bolt and a conical tooth washer. With the washer, you wanna make sure that those teeth are facing towards the hitch. That way, they bite down on it. We're ready to lift our hitch into place. It's a good idea to have an extra set of hands. I have my friend Dan here to help me out. So we're gonna start by snaking his end over the exhaust tailpipe there, and then work both ends up. Try to get them lined up with those holes. And depending on your hitch, it can be pretty tight. So we'll just put this lined up as best as we can, and once we do, we'll get a bolt started in one of the holes so that'll hold it up into place. It was pretty tricky to get all of our bolts lined up. So what I did was me and Daniel held it up. I hit it with a dead blow to get our first one started and then just continued that same process just kinda getting those holes all to line up, but once you get 'em all started, you can go over them with a 19-millimeter socket and snug 'em down. (wrench buzzing) Now we'll take our torque wrench and go over all of our hardware to make sure that it's torqued down to the specification in the instructions. (wrench beeping) All that's left is to get our exhaust hung back up, but otherwise that's gonna do it for our look at and installation of the etrailer Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander.

Looks very good. The matte black finish complements the trim on the Outlander nicely.

Installed on my own without help at ground level which was a bit tricky.

Some tips:

1. Secure exhaust with a ratchet strap to support when lowering.
2. Use a little grease/petro jelly when sliding of the rubber hanger. The portion attached to the black pin on the car was easier of the 2 to remove from.
3. Once I slipped the hitch over the exhaust I suspended it with a bungee cord using the holes near where the exhaust was detached from.
4. I then suspended the nom-exhaust side with a bungee and balanced the whole thing with a car jack under the receiver.
5. It was a tight fit to get up to the 3 threaded bolts on either side and align them, so it required some pushing, jiggling and a dead blow hammer to tap in position.
6. I put in a bolt on each side by hand, and continued to push and tap to align the holes.
7. Once aligned the rest was simple and just a matter of bolting it all in.

Took me about 2.5 hours because of the problem solving of how to get off the rubber hanger, and figuring out how to get the hitch in position with 1 person. Went smoothly after the bungee cord solution.

I got stuck on the mounting holes but support got me on track having me buy a tap to clean them! The brush idea in the instructions didn't work. Hitch fits perfectly!

This is my 2nd hitch from etrailer. Overall it’s well built and fits well. The powder coat looks better than gloss finish. Fast delivery except the box is again torn on the sides exposing the brackets so packaging still needs improvement.

by:

Only reason why I did not give this a five-star is because the package in could have been better. The corners of the trailer hitch busted through the box along with the 2-in receiver busted through the box and was slightly damaged as far as the paint. I recommendation would be to use a little bit larger box and bubble wrap the sharp ends to avoid breaking through the box and getting damaged. Other than that the installation went well and all parts fit great!!!

Would have got a 5, but box arrived damaged with the product hanging out. There were some minor cosmetic blemishes that I would attribute to there being no packaging materials inside the box. I did not feel like returning over this as I needed to get installed to use. I would imagine many hitches arrive this way regardless of how much care the shipper takes. Overall fitment was good and all needed hardware was included.

  • Best Trailer Hitch For 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander Base Model
Hello Daniel, thanks for reaching out! To answer your first question, yes, we do offer a trailer hitch for the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander regular model. The etrailer Class 3 Hitch # e79ZV is what I recommend for that. This has a 2" receiver, 525 lb tongue weight rating and 3,500 lb towing capacity. To answer your second question, we are an online parts retailer. We are a family-owned business based out of Wentzville, MO (near St Louis). We cover pretty much anything RV/Trailer/Towing/Sport&Rec...

  • Is There a Hitch that Fits 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Hey John, sorry for the confusion but we do have hitches that fit you 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV like with the Curt # C86FV and the EcoHitch part # EH64CR but the etrailer hitch you mentioned does not fit the PHEV models. The Curt is more like a standard type hitch whereas the EcoHitch has a removable lower section so when not in use you could basically have it be invisible. What will you be using the hitch for?
