With a maximum gross trailer weight of 5,000 lbs and a tongue weight of 500 lbs, this hitch is built to handle light to moderate towing needs. When used with weight distribution, it steps up to 5,500 lbs GTW and 550 lbs TW. The 2" x 2" receiver opening gives you the flexibility to use a wide variety of towing accessories—from ball mounts and cargo carriers to bike racks—without needing extra adapters.

Tackle Installs Without the Hassle: Bolt-On, No Welding Required

This hitch bolts directly onto the frame using the included mounting hardware—no welding needed. The design lines up with the existing holes for a clean, straightforward install whether you’re working in a driveway or garage. The precision, robotic welding ensures the fit is exact and secure, so you can get it mounted and move on to loading up your gear.

Built to Last Through Every Trip: Fully Welded, Powder Coated Steel

The fully welded steel construction gives this hitch solid strength and durability for long-term use. I thought the hitch was damaged but was told that there was something called "flexing". Very easy to take care of and the mounting was easy.

by:

This hitch fit my '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee perfectly. The quality was excellent and E-trailer has has been a great vendor to work with.

by:

I have not had any problems with the hitch. It works as advertised.

by:

This hitch was on and working in less than an hour. Way less. And it looks, today - a year after install, like I put it on yesterday. No peeling, bending or rust. A super value with no lacking of quality.

by:

It fit perfectly and I have been pulling my boat around with it. Also pulling my loaded down utility trailer with no problems.

by:

Very easy install. And the videos on etrailer.com make the wiring a snap. I will be back for sure. Thanks again etrailer.com

by:

i was really happy with their servi ce

by:

I am pretty happy so far with the Curt Trailer Hitch III. The package arrived within two days with ALL of the components and was VERY simple to install. I will order from E-Trailer in the future.

***As a side note to installation, I would like to add a few comments. I own a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.9L. This is the first time the bolts underneath have been removed and there was a severe amount of rust and calcium build up in the frame. I used a wire brush(battery terminal cleaner -type) but it may be handy to have a tap and die set to re-thread the holes. I had no problems with the nuts whatsoever.**

Shipped well, packaged well and came with all the hardware needed. Easy install and great support during and after the product was shipped. Would highly recommend! These are the pros. Don't use just anyone. Use eTrailer!

  • Hitch and Wiring for a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Hello John, No, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13048 does not come with the wiring, but it is a great fit for your 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. For the wiring you are going to want the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118349, and don't forget a # 18144 for a clean looking install. Now the # 118349 is going to get you equipped with a 4-flat to get the lights working on the trailer, if you are looking to tow something with brakes...

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
Your 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited most likely came with either no trailer connection at all or a 7-way round trailer connector. If you have a round connector at the rear of your vehicle near the hitch that looks like the part # 20135 then you have a 7-way. To see if you have the connection point to install the wiring harness designed for factory wired vehicles (part # C55260) you will need to look on the driver's side behind the spare. You will see an access panel there. Open it...

  • How do I Find Out if my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Came with the Factory Tow Package?
In most cases you'll be able to tell whether or not your Jeep has the factory tow package because it came with an unbranded (no manufacturer) hitch and a wiring harness installed on the rear of the vehicle. Even if those two things aren't true, it doesn't mean that at one point they were not attached. The most accurate way to determine the factory build on your Jeep is using the Jeep website and putting in your VIN to get the exact build sheet for your 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. If you...

  • Tongue Weight Capacity Needed to Transport Motorized 300-lb Wheelchair on Hitch Carrier
The weight capacity that matters when using a hitch-mounted wheelchair carrier is tongue weight (TW) which is downward force on the hitch and vehicle frame. Both the hitch itself and the vehicle must be rated adequately for the combined weight of the carrier and the wheelchair. A ramp-equipped carrier like Curt # FHG77ZR which weighs 80-lbs means the total TW load on the hitch and vehicle from the carrier and wheelchair will be 380-lbs. The hitch that we offer for the 1994 Grand Cherokee,...

  • Recommended Hitch and Wiring Harness for a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Curt Trailer Hitch item # C13048 includes all necessary hardware to attach the hitch to your 1994 Grand Cherokee. It does not include a wiring harness. For a compatible wiring harness, I recommend the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness item # HM42515. This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your Jeep's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. To round out your towing setup you will also need the Curt Towing Starter...

  • Curt Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
I have a solution for your, but the # C13048 that you referenced has not been confirmed as a fit for your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I checked with Curt, the manufacturer, to confirm this. Instead you would want the Curt hitch part # 13051 as it has been confirmed as a fit.

  • What Vehicles Does the Curt Hitch part # C13048 Fit
The Curt Hitch part # C13048 that you referenced fits 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokees. Since hitch install hardware is designed for one time use it would be a good idea to include new install hardware with the hitch when you sell it. For that you will need part # RHK. You will need to select the hitch manufacturer and the part number for the hitch before you hit add to cart.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 1997 Jeep Wrangler
The towing capacity for the Curt hitch part # C13048 that you referenced is 5,000 lbs which would be about twice as much as you would need for your horse trailer when it is fully loaded based on what you listed. You will need to check the owners manual of your Jeep to determine it's towing capacity and be sure not to exceed the lower of the two figures. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2009 Ford Escape
The 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2009 Ford Escape are built on very different platforms so the hitches for each are not interchangeable with each other. For the 2009 Ford Escape the most popular trailer hitch option is # 13650. This is a Class III trailer hitch with a 2 inch receiver. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch...

  • Does Curt Hitch Receiver for 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have a Back Plate on Receiver
The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13048 that fits your 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have a back plate to the receiver - it's hollow all the way through. This should be a little closer to the rear bumper of your Jeep but it won't be life-changing. When we installed this hitch on a 1998 Grand Cherokee we found the center of the hitch pin hole to the rearmost edge of the rear bumper to be 5" which is probably going to be about the same for your 1997. Attached is an installation video...

  • Are Curt Hitch OEM or Aftermarket Hitches
Curt hitches like either the part # C13048 or the # C13151 that are both confirmed to fit your 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee are aftermarket hitches. They would not be considered OEM.
