Features to know about

Do I Need a Braking System for Flat Towing?

A braking system is a must when towing a Ford Mustang behind your motorhome. Without it, the extra weight of your toad (towed Ford Mustang) puts more stress on your RV's brakes, makes it harder to stop safely, and can even put your warranties at risk. Most states legally require one, and if you're ever in an accident, not having a braking system could leave you with major insurance and liability problems. Plus, without one you don't have a breakaway safeguard. If your toad ever disconnects, there's nothing to bring it to a stop.

Pros of a Portable System

First, this system is great for DIYers because there's minimal installation. You just run a cable from the breakaway switch on the front of your car into the cab to connect with the unit. The trickiest part might be drilling through the firewall if there isn't already a hole, but once that's done the rest is simple. Clip on the brake pedal claw, plug the unit into your car's 12V outlet, press the "Auto Position" button, and follow the voice prompts. That's it. If you want to avoid the drilling altogether there is a wireless breakaway adapter available (RVI84FR - sold separately).

Second, it gives you a lot of flexibility. Moving it from one toad to another is simple. As long as you have a second Ford Mustang breakaway kit (RVi97FR — sold separately) installed, the Curt RVi 4 can be set up in another car in minutes. That means you can switch up which Ford Mustang comes with you on your next camping trip. And if you trade in your toad down the road, getting the new one ready for this unit is a breeze.

How Does the Curt RVi 4 Work?

The RVi 4 has a built-in inertia sensor that knows when your motorhome slows down. As soon as it senses that change, it presses your toad's brake pedal at the same time and with the same force you apply up front. From a gradual slow down at a red light to a hard stop in an emergency, the toad and the RV will brake together. That's what makes it a proportional system.

Compatible with Hybrids and Continuous-Power-Assist Brakes

If you're towing a hybrid or any car with continuous-power-assist brakes, all you have to do to use the RVi 4 is choose Active in the "Brake Type" setting on the Bullseye monitor.

Breakaway System

The RVi 4 also comes with a breakaway switch, an absolute must for safe flat towing. If there's ever an emergency situation where your toad becomes detached from the motorhome, the breakaway switch will immediately activate the brakes and bring your Ford Mustang to a stop.

This switch mounts to the front of your toad and plugs directly into the unit. It includes a pin that connects to your RV's hitch receiver with a breakaway cable. If the toad and RV become disconnected, the cable will pull the pin out of the switch and trigger the braking system.

If you’ve ever worried about the hassle of installing a flat tow brake system every time, the Curt RVi Series?4 Portable Flat Tow Brake System (RVI44FR) is what you’ve been waiting for. It satisfies your safety and legal needs without hassle thanks to the audio assistant that walks you through a 30-second setup, and it knows exactly when you’re towing with its proportional braking system that mirrors your RV’s pressure. I’m impressed by how it fits almost any vehicle, stays compact thanks to its 12V plug-in design, and shows you live feedback with the Bullseye wireless monitor right on your dash. The breakaway kit protects you if things go wrong, and everything packs away easily between trips. For any RVer who hates complicated installs but still wants dependable, legal, and safe braking, this portable system is a perfect match.

Jesse (etrailer.com employee) here. I got my first look at the RVI brake system last week. My first impression was the box and packaging was very neat and clean. The portable system was extremely easy to set up. It talks to you and tells you what to do! This is perfect for DIYers or first timers that don't want to pay big $$$$ to have a shop install a braking system. This system uses the Bullseye monitor which is what really sets it apart. The bullseye is a touch screen and it does all kinds of stuff like real time towing info, diagnostics and braking adjustment just to mention a few.

I recently got to host a first look for this system and I gotta say, its pretty cool. Its small and lighter than similar systems. It can be a little clunky the first time you install it but once you get through that first install, it becomes a lot easier. Once plugged in, the unit will talk you through how to calibrate and will notify you if there are any issues. If there is, the Bullseye will tell you what the issue is and what needs to be done. Cuts out a lot of guess work. The only thing that needs to be installed in the breakaway. I highly recommend this system to someone who wants something easy to use with next to no install.

by:

We just got these added to the site, so I was really excited to go to the first look training so I can learn more. I love that this RVI system is not as bulky as the other portable systems I have had in the past. It is very simple to install, and I really like how it talks back to me, just like my kids Ha Ha! The Bullseye screen is definitely a bonus, it gives peace of mind while flat towing. If things start acting up it alerts you.

  • How Does Curt RVi 4 Supplemental Brake For Flat Towing Know When To Apply Toed Brakes?
The RVi4 Portable Supplemental Braking System from Curt # RVI44FR uses an onboard accelerometer to detect changes in inertia, so when your motorhome slows down, the RVi4 senses it and applies the toad’s brakes proportionally. It even adjusts for uphill and downhill slopes, so it’s not more sensitive going downhill like some older systems. Pretty smart braking tech in a simple setup. What system have you used in the past?

  • Option For Replacing Failing Brake Buddy Vantage 3
Hello Mike, thanks for reaching out. These all sound like pretty typical symptoms of a failing braking system. The Brake Buddy isn't known for being super durable in the first place, so one lasting 8 years is actually pretty impressive. I'm afraid there isn't much troubleshooting do be done here since the unit is already failing. At this point I would have to recommend replacing it with a new one. Or if you want something aside from a Brake Buddy we do have a couple other similar portable...

  • Difference Between RVibrake3 and Curt RVi Series 4 Portable Flat Tow Brake System
Hey Steve! That is a great question. The main difference between the Curt RVi Series 4 # RVI44FR and the old 3 is the new e Bullseye Wireless Monitor. They made a few other minor upgrades such as the speaker and the button seeing an improvement but otherwise the major underlying technology has not changed.

  • How To Adjust Braking Sensitivity Of Curt RVi Series 4 Flat Tow Portable Brake System That Grabs
Absolutely, Dave. You can fine-tune the Curt RVi Series 4 Portable Flat Tow Brake System # RVI44FR 's brake pressure and sensitivity right from the Bullseye monitor in your motorhome. In your case, some people try stepping down from Small SUV to Compact Car under the Brake Pressure setting, but technically that's not the correct setup for your SUV. If it still feels a bit grabby, you can reduce the Sensitivity too. The goal is a gentle tug, not a jolt, when the system activates. Let me...

  • Curt RVi Supplemental Braking System That's Easy To Install In Driveway For Flat Tow
Mark, if you’re comfortable routing cables, working in the engine bay, and drilling through the firewall, then yes, this is definitely DIY-friendly for the mechanically inclined. The Shadow 2 # RVi94FR is designed with plug-and-play connectors, no soldering or splicing, and straightforward mounting instructions. That said, the full install will likely take an afternoon to do, especially the routing of the brake cable and tying into the vacuum line if your vehicle has one. You’ll also want...

  • If Bullseye Monitor Dies Can I Still Use Curt RVi 4 Braking System When Flat Towing?
You can. If the Bullseye Wireless Monitor isn’t available, just press and hold the “Auto Position” button on the Curt Portable RVi4 # RVI44FR itself for 10 seconds. It’ll enter a settings mode where you can adjust Brake Type and Pressure manually using the built-in audio prompts. After adjusting, hold the button again for 3 seconds to save your settings. I attached a section of the instructions which goes over this topic. Let me know if you have any issues or concerns!

Yes, the Curt portable braking system for flat towing # RVI44FR is designed for both vacuum-assist and active electric or hydraulic brake systems, like those found on hybrids and EVs. Just make sure to select “Active Assist” in the Brake Type settings on your Bullseye display. From there, you can set your desired PSI starting around 5 PSI and use the Brake Test feature to dial it in. See attached photo for more info on this. :) What type of motorhome do you have? • Do Floor Mats Need To Be Removed For Curt RVi 4 Portable Braking System Installation?
You might. The Portable RVi4 brake system # RVI44FR can usually sit just fine on carpeted floor mats, but thicker rubber ones can interfere with leveling or movement. If yours are pretty chunky, I’d remove them for towing. You want a firm, even surface for the unit to press off of. That’ll help prevent brake drag or misalignment during setup

  • Can Curt RVi Series 4 Use Breakaway From Blue Ox Patriot
Hey Jerome! I agree that the Curt RVi Series 4 Portable Flat Tow Brake System # RVI44FR will be a better fit for your 2011 Wrangler. However, you will need to replace the Patriot breakaway with the one included with the Curt to make sure it works as intended. If you don't want to run another wire into the cab you can always use the Curt RVI Series Breakaway Wireless Adapter for RVibrake 3 and RVibrake 4 # RVI84FR.

The four diodes included with the Demco 4-Diode Universal Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles item # DM9523010-54 aren't capable of separating those signals which is why you're getting those issues when you press the brakes.
