Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. You will have to remove all trunk floor coverings, storage trays, and the scuff panel to access these connection points. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Review of Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM43414

Today, we're going to take a look at the Hopkins plug-in simple vehicle wiring harness with the four-way flat trailer connector. Now this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2015 to 2018 Lexus NX 200t and the NX 300h vehicles. And on a custom fit part like this, I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it'll show if this'll work for your application. Now, this harness will provide this four-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer's signal lights. It is compatible with five pole, six pole and seven pole adapters that we do sell separately.

Does connect very quickly and easily. I'm going to go through this in detail at the end of the video to show you how all these parts connect, but simply what happens is you'll go to the rear of your vehicle, locate your connection points, that'll be behind the tail lights.Plug in these connectors right here, one on each side, one on the driver's side, one on the passenger side, and then you'll ground your white wire. And then you'll run this power wire to your vehicle's battery at the front of the vehicle. This does include this tail light converter, this black box right here to ensure that your vehicles wiring will match that of your trailer. And it is a power module which will connect directly to the battery to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system.

They do use protective connection terminals to resist corrosion. Does come with this nice dust cover for the four-way so you can attach that to the four way plug and you can leave it on there if you like. And then if you're not plugged in or not using it, just put it over the terminals and that'll protect them from the elements and from any damage. Does also come with this inline fuse holder, extra length of wire, some cable ties, terminal grease packet, your fuse and a grounding screw.A few specs on this, the maximum amperage on the stop and turn light circuits is three amps per circuit. The tail lights is six amps per circuit.

And again, what I'm going to go through is all these parts, how they connect. So, I want you again, go to the rear of the vehicle, gain access to behind the tail lights. And then you unplug the harness, plug it into. You want to start on the driver's side, you'll take the shorter length of wire with the yellow wire on the driver's side, unplug the harness from the tail light, plug it in here, plug it into the tail light. And then you got the driver's side done.

And then what you want to do is take the other connector that has this longer length of green wire that's for the passenger side, run that over to the passenger side, do the same thing.Plug this in behind the tail lights. Once those are all connected, this converter box does have a little weight to it. So, you don't want it bouncing around. You want to attach it to a good flat surface. You can use some cable ties to run through here, to hold it in place. You could use some double stick tape, just anything to keep it secure to a nice flat surface. Once that's done, you have two wires remaining, the white wire and the power wire, the white wire has an eyelet on it and it goes to good clean ground. So, if there's one nearby, you can use, if not use the grounding screw and make your own, and then your power wire has a butt connector on it. That'll need to go to your vehicle's battery at the front of the vehicle. And that's why they give you this extra length of wire. So, you'll attach this one into the butt connector, run this length of wire all the way up to the front of your vehicle. Once you get up there, you don't want to connect this directly to the battery. You want to run it through this inline fuse holder. So, you'll connect this to the butt connector, just like that. And then on this end you'll have an eyelet, this'll connect to the battery. Once it's all connected to the battery, take your included 15 amp fuse, put it into the fuse holder, push it all the way in, put your cover on, and then you're all ready to go. And again, they give you some packets or this packet of terminal grease, which is a dielectric grease. And anytime you make a wiring connection, you do want to put some grease on there to help prevent any corrosion. They do give you some extra cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring, but that's about it as far as the installation, and that would do it for the review on the Hopkins plug-in simple vehicle wiring harness with the four way flat trailer connector.
