Hi, everyone. It's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today, we are looking at the GSI Outdoors Pinnacle canister backpacking outdoor stove here at etrailer. This is a small, compact, lightweight canister stove. This is great when you're going out hiking, you're backpacking, and you want something that's small and takes up just a little bit amount of space but is still effective. The canister stove is 2.4 ounces.
For those who are counting how much weight they can add to their backpack, that will help with figuring out and planning around your needs. You can see how small it is. It fits right inside my hand and my hand is already small. What makes this so compact is how everything folds in. So, you have these pot support arms that just rotate for when you are ready to start cooking.
And when you are ready to put it away, you just fold them right back in. This has a flame adjuster valve that is also foldable to become more compact. When you're ready to start cooking, you just turn that flame adjuster valve. And when you're done, you just fold it back into place. This stove comes with a little pouch to store your stove when you're not using this.
This is nice because then it's easy to carry around. You also have some instructions inside your little pouch, that way, you can always remember how to use it. Now, this stove does not come with an igniter, so make sure to have either your matches or your lighter on hand in order to use this. I use a barbecue lighter because I found that it's the safe choice. Now, the most important thing about using a stove is that you install it properly, so let's take a look at that process.
The first thing I do is just to set up my stove, so that involves moving the support arms into the ready position. Once that is done, I then get my flame adjuster valve, open that up, and turn it to closed. Then, we prep our canister. Please double-check that you have the right fuel for your stove, which is the mixture of isobutane and propane, so isopro. Once that's ready, you then screw on your canister stove onto the canister. Make sure that this is on a level area that is nonflammable. Make sure you turn it all the way up. You may hear the gas at first. So, you have to make sure that it's tight and secure, and that your valve is in the closed position. Once you have that all set up, then you are ready to use it. After a long day of hiking, I'm ready to eat. So, what I have here is my water in my water bottle, the GSI Outdoors Halulite Minimalist camping or cooking set, my fuel canister, as well as my cooking stove. With these, I get to prepare my freeze dried food. What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna boil 16 ounces or two cups of water. Now, of course, this depends on what meal you're preparing for how much water you need. That's a pretty good average right there. So, let's just fill that up. We're gonna turn the fuel adjuster valve to on, so just turn that till you hear the gas, and then light it. Once you do that, you can control how much heat you want by controlling the valve. We're gonna have it right there in the middle and then set our water on top. Now, we're gonna wait for our water to boil. While waiting, I like to put this right by the canister. It comes with the set. That way, when it's boiling and it's hot, we're ready to go. Now, that it's boiling, we're gonna turn this off. There we go. And then, leave the stove for 10 minutes to let it cool. Now, the Halulite Minimalist cooking set does come with a spoon slash fork, a spork. And this can be used to stir your food if you need to. If you are done cooking and this is off, just leave it for about 10 minutes. That way, you're sure this is completely cool before you take the stove off of the canister. The Pinnacle canister stove has a BTUH of 96 29, and what that means is that is its heating capacity or heating capability. If you have a larger number for your BTUH, that means it is capable of producing more heat in a certain amount of time. Now, we have a couple of canister stoves here at etrailer, so let's put them to the test. I have here two cups of cold water. And what we're gonna do is we're gonna see how fast it takes for these two cups to boil on each of the stoves at medium capacity. It's at medium capacity right now, so let's start the timer. It just started really boiling, so let's turn that off right now. And we are at four minutes and 15 seconds. Here, I have 16 ounces of cold water. So, we're gonna set it up on there and start the timer. I have it set to medium fuel. Let's see how fast it boils. So far, we're at a minute and a half in, and it looks like it's starting to simmer. It's just now violently boiling. That was four minutes and 45 seconds. Now, while this is really strong heat compared to the say, the GSI Outdoors Pinnacle, we did notice that the heat was being shot out on this side of the stove which means it took a little bit longer for this pot to start boiling. So, that makes a difference in terms of how fast something can boil. It does depend on the pot you are using. My final thoughts about this stove is that the best thing about it is how compact and how light it was. When we hooked it up to the canister, you can see how quickly it was to get things boiling which was great. Now, GSI Outdoors has other stoves. There are other canister stoves here at etrailer.com. But if you are very conscious about weight, especially on the trail, and you're with your backpacks and you wanna make sure you have just the most minimalistic equipment you can get, this is a pretty good option for that. And that was a look here at our GSI Outdoors Pinnacle canister stove for backpacking here at etrailer.com..
