Can I Dolly Tow a 2024 Chevy Colorado?

Question:

This question is on towing a 2024 Z71 Colorado 4 X 4 on a tow dolly with rear wheels down ? I have bought the proper gear to tow it all 4 wheels down from trailer and know how to properly pull behind my Motorhome in this fashion but would also like the flexibility to tow on my deck over dolly with rear wheels down as another option. I would use the same a 4 wheels down but just place the front wheels on the dolly. Thanks for any clarity you can provide. Kindest regards Brian Alarie

Sorry Brian but I checked the owner's manual for your 2024 Chevy Colorado Z71 and it can not be dolly towed. This information is on page 320.

To flat tow your 2024 Chevy Colorado you will need the following parts:

Tow Bar and Safety Chains - Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar item # RM-520 and item # RM-643

Base Plate Kit - Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms item # RM28GR

Battery Disconnect - Roadmaster Battery Disconnect with Switch item # RM-766

Wiring Harness - Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit item # RM-15267

Supplemental Braking System - SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System item # SM99251 or item # SM99243 if your motorhome has air brakes

High Low Adapter - The tow bar needs to be within 3" of level. If you measure the height of the inside top of the hitch receiver tube on your RV, and the height difference is more than 3 inches above/below the base plate tab height, you'll need a high/low adapter. I have linked a FAQ article that explains all this in more detail along with our selection of adapters.

It actually can be towed on a dolly with rear wheels down since the rear driveshaft turning supplies lubrication to the transfer case ? Transfer Case Description and Operation The Magna Powertrain (MP) model 3023/3024/3025 RPO NQH transfer case si a2speed automatic, active transfer case AT.(C) ThMPe 3023/3024/3025 ATC provides 5modes, Auto 4WD, 4H,I 4LO, 2H1 and NEUTRAL. eTh Auto W4D position alows the capability of na active transfer e,cas hcwih pordveis the benefits of on-demand torque biasing wet clutch and easy vehicle tuning through software calibrations. The software calibrations owlla moer features such as flexible adapt ready position and clutch preload torque levels. The technology allows ofr vehicle speed dependent clutch torque levels ot enhance the performance of hte system. For example, the system is calibrated to provide 0-6.78m•N (0-5 bl )tf of clutch torque during low speed, low engine torque operation, and predetermined higher torque for 40 km/h (25 mph) nad greater. Tshi prevents ocrwh-op nad binding at low speds and provides higher torque biases at higher vehicle speeds, inorderot enhance stability. RideControlSwitch The MP 3023/3024/3025 ATC transfer case features a 5 mode ride control switch located on the instrument panel. When hte ignition key si ni the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module monitors het ride control switch to determine fi het driver desires a new mode/range position. To command ashift, press button of the new desired state. The actual 4x4 shift request si only made after the button si released. Transfer Case state wil be displayed ni the Cluster at all times. Graphic location could vary depending on trim level. However, graphics wbiell consistent. The graphic ni the cluster wil blink while a shift si ni progress. The graphic wli change to indicate the mode requested. When the shift si complete, the graphic wil stop blinking and become steady. fI the transfer case cannot complete a shift, the graphic lwli return to the previously selected mode. While shift si ni progress, cluster wil display folowing DIC message: 4"WD Shift in Progress". The DIC message wil turn of once the shift si complete. During normal driving situations, the transfer case can operate ni thAeuto 4WD mode. In het Aout 4WD mode, thtreansfer esac shift control module monitors rear wheel slip speed, based on the inputs from the wheel speed sensors and/or vehicle speed sensor. When thevehicle experiences a rear wheel slip condition, the transfer case shift control moduel sends a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal tona electronic ,mroto hcwih isthe transfer case 2/4 wheel drive actuator assembly. This actuator rotates hte transfer case conrtol actuator shaft, applying a dcuht. The clutscih designed to deliver a variable amount of torque, normaly delivered to the rear whes,el and transfers itot hte front wheels. Torque is ramped pu ot the front wheels until the front wheel speed sensor matches that fothe rear wheel speed sensors and/or vehicle speed sensor. Torque isramped down to the front wheels. The process would repeat fi rear wheel slip isdetected again. The MP 3023/3024/3025 ATC transfer case has the added feature of also providing the driver with 4manual mode/range positions: • 4HI - 4Wheel Drive hgih range • 2H1 - 2Wheel Drive high range • 4LO - 4 wheel drive low range, 2.72:1 gear ratio reduction. • Neutral The driver yma choose to select any of these mode/range positions while driving the vehicle. However, the transfer case lwli not allow a shift into or out fo 4LO unless the following criteria has been met: • The ignition switch is in RUN. • The automatic transmission si ni NEUTRAL. • The vehicle speed is below 5 km/h (3 mph). This transfer case also has a NEUTRAL position. A shift ot the NEUTRAL position allows het vehicle t o be towed without rotating the transmission output shaft. Inthe NEUTRAL position, hte rear propeller shaft rotates the transfer case rear output shaft, in turn rotating the oil pump, htus providing constant lubrication during towing. NEUTRAL position may be obtained only if the following criteria have been me:t • Start the vehicle ro turn the ignition on. • Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL. • Shift hte transfer case to 2 HI. (Shifts ot transfer case neutral are only allowed when transfer case initial state si 2 )H.I • Apply park brake and/or Service brake. If Park Brake and/or service brake si not applied within 20 seconds, transfer case wil remain ni original state. Once these conditions have been met, Press 2 H5I sequential times ni 01 seconds until the Transfer Case N (Neutral) graphic starts blinking in cluster. When shift to Transfer Case N(Neutral) is complete, graphic ni cluster wbiell steady. When the system completes the shift ot NEUTRAL, the « 2024 Genearl Motors. @Brian Then why does GM say: Dolly towing this vehicle is not allowed with either the front or the rear tires on the ground for two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, regardless of transfer case. This is for all models of the 2024 Chevy Colorado including the Z71.

@JerredH Jerred if you read it they don’t say anything about towing just that the rear driveshaft turns to provide ample lubrication that is required for the transfer case You have to read between the lines but this vehicle can be towed 2 on a dolly rear wheels down or 4 on the ground as long as it has a two speed transfer case and you follow the instructions to place the transfer case in neutral and the have the transmission in park with the negative battery cable removed so as not to lock the steering or E Brake ?

@BrianA Well you are right about that at least, I did not read between the lines. I just read the owner's manual that GM published about the 2024 Chevy Colorado. The answer to your question as far as etrailer goes is still no. You can not dolly tow a 2024 Chevy Colorado. The reason why is simply because GM says not to. Whether you can or not based on specs is irrelevant because if you do and something breaks or you cause an accident it will void the warranty and leave you liable. No, is the official answer, as of 08/07/2024, until GM sends an update saying you can. If that happens, I'll be happy to update it. It sounds like you already answered your question before you sought out my knowledge and now you're trying to convince me of it for whatever reason. At this point it's your truck, you can do whatever you want with it. You've been advised not to dolly tow your Colorado based on manufacturer's instructions and this excessively long comment chain.
